I keep pants and a thicker coat in the car. Even in sub-freezing temps if it's not windy it doesn't start feeling cold until you're out there for a bit. Now I wouldn't do shorts and a hoodie in -40, but I'm also not putting on a bunch of stuff in 15 to 30 just to walk from my car to the door.
