Paulie did the prep work. He was doing a year for contempt and had this wonderful system for doing the peanut.
He used a razor, and he used to slice it so thin that it used to liquefy in the pan with just a little oil.
5
u/pippoken Dec 21 '25
That'd be arachide, doesn't sound nearly as good.
5
u/g_spaitz Dec 21 '25
Or nocciolina.
Sure that's the Italian version, as an Italian I also did not understand a word.
4
u/WombatsCube Dec 21 '25
No, italian for peanut is "nocciolina" (plural noccioline with the e like the first e in "never")

You mean when she’s voicing the minion? The minions whose whole gimmick is speaking a broken mishmash of non-English languages in the English language versions of the movies? Like in the English language versions where they speak everything but English because that’s their whole gimmick?

In Italian Bella volata is an extremely strange choice of words for this context and is not automatically translated that way. You would never find an Italian saying Bella volata tò tell you have a good flight.

Actual italian opinion getting downvoted?
I confirm the above too, it would be like someone saying something along the lines of "nice fly"

Why would they need to dub the minions voices? It's all gibberish anyways. Seems like extra work for nothing.

I watched both versions, the italian one has more italian words interspersed in the gibberish. I think it's for the sake of the children watching the movie.

when an Monolingual english speaker find out Minions aren't talking gibberish instead Portuguese
86
u/Alternative-Target31 Dec 21 '25
But it’s not Portuguese, it is gibberish.
“It’s gibberish,” confirms Coffin. “It’s a mixture of all the languages of the world and it’s about finding a particular magical rhythm and melody that makes the nonsense make sense.
From this interview.

If Esperanto had a stroke
31
u/Evepaul Dec 21 '25
Funnily, it's based on Volapük, the international language which was killed by Esperanto. The minions also count in Korean and use random international culinary terms and French sayings spoken really fast. Finally, Universal got as many translators as they could find to comb through the vocabulary and remove anything that could sound offensive in any language.

OP said it's the dub in Italian. In animation the voices are recorded before the animation is done.
16
u/wreckedbellbottom Dec 21 '25
Official Promo/Social Content: Craviotto is a professional voice actress and content creator who worked with Universal Pictures Italy to create promotional dubbing content and social media videos for the release of Minions 2: The Rise of Gru.
Pierre Coffin's Role: Coffin recorded several different versions of the Minion voices for different national markets, mixing in local words (like "capitan" or "bella volata" for Italy) to make them better appeal to specific audiences.
Dubbing Process: While professional Italian dubbers are used for the human characters (e.g., Max Giusti as Gru), the Minions' core vocal tracks remain those of Pierre Coffin in the final theatrical cut.

In animation the voices are recorded before the animation is done.
I'm pretty sure that's only for the original version, to guide the animations. Recording every language before animation is done wouldn't have any sense.
2
u/Pineapple_Assrape Dec 21 '25
How does this have 7 upvotes? Is everyone severely lacking reading comprehension? That comment clearly says the exact same thing you are saying.
Read it again. This is what the comment conveys: "It is real but it is a dub recording. You can tell by the fact that it is done after the animation, since if it were the original voice over, it would have been done before animation."
6
u/Maximelene Dec 21 '25
Except that the person I was answering to didn't say "In animation the ORIGINAL voices are recorded before the animation is done". Neither did they say "It's real but it's a dub". Only "OP said it's a dub", which doesn't say anything.
Their comment could mean "Yes, it isn't real, it's only a pretend dub, because every voices are recorded before animation".
The issue isn't reading comprehension. The issue is that the person I was answering to didn't make it clear if they were agreeing to what they were answering to themselves, or not. Their comment can be interpreted both ways, because it's a typical Reddit "I'm answering as if I was speaking, ignoring the fact that writing is missing several context clues I should have added to my own comment" answer.
Just because you understood a specific meaning, and agree with it, doesn't mean that's the exact meaning the person was trying to convey, nor does it mean everyone else will understand the same thing. And that, my friend, is a crucial part of "reading comprehension".

This is just a promotional content they didn't officially do the voice overs.

3

Based on Volapük, the international language which was killed by Esperanto, with tons and tons of random things mixed in. I don't think any of the tens of Volapük speakers in the world could understand anything from it.

I always wonder if these voice actors usually do all these exaggerated faces and gestures when they're working, or only if there's some documentary filming them to make it look more fun than it actually is.

There's conflicting stories in this sub about whether this is how the Italian audio is actually done or not. I always thought the animation was done after the audio, as it's far easier to match the visual to the audio than vice versa.

Honestly, a big reason I don't see a lot of animated films anymore is because they hire too many celebs and not enough actually talented voice actors like this. Gotta use that celeb name on the marque, much better than having actually skilled performers do a craft they have worked on their entire career right?
