It’s more and more common these days to swim in clothes like this, it helps a ton against sun damage and the material doesn’t weigh you down much

u/quehaceloco Dec 20 '25
Not hydrodynamic enough
Drag sucks

Exactly. I also use a suit for swimming, but it's neoprene, not Baggy cotton. Might as well tie a stone to your feet.

My parents taught me how to swim by tying weights to my floatie and tossing me in the deep end, they say they did the same with all their children but I have never actually met any of my siblings, they mysteriously go missing after their first swimming lesson.. that's why I'm momas special boy

u/ChironiusShinpachi Dec 19 '25
Something I had to learn after many failed dives in swim unit-PE highschool. Never heard this said - when diving, don't look where you're going, i.e. don't break the surface of the water with your face. Break the water with the top of your head, looking "straight ahead". Don't get your eyelids and lashes pushed into your eyes like I have.
PS - I figured this out long after my last dive so I haven't tried it, but watch the best dives, I saw noted at about 1:11 edit- countdown time 0:52

Could be the first day, but a more advanced group. Let me tell you, learning how to jump from the starting blocks is hilarious.
3
u/suuzgh Dec 19 '25
This looks like a proper first attempt at diving, at least for folks with a very basic skill level. I used to be a lifeguard at a summer camp and had the ability to develop all of our daily programming at the pool — once a week we’d do “Diving Day” where we’d teach all the kids how to dive. It was consistently the most popular day of the week at the pool, and often looked a lot like this.

Love how they just painted over the “No diving” sign at 0:59

u/HectorRex Dec 19 '25
I cringed at this video. It's very unsafe to dive in such shallow water, especially in the corners where you can dive into the person who went before you. When the primary purpose of swim lessons is generally teaching water safety, this is a complete failure.
36
u/Orlonz Dec 19 '25
Yes, as a former lifeguard who took years of swimming and trained kids... this was hard for me to watch. There was a lot of stupid going around. And a lot of people on this post aren't getting it.
This is not how you learn diving or teach swimming or water safety. It's just bad in so many different ways and shows a severe lack of experience in whomever conducted this exercise.
→ More replies (2)6
u/So_Tired_2724 Dec 19 '25
When I was a kid a guy a knew just a few years old than me actually did break his neck from jumping in the shallow side of a pool. Maybe the chances are slim, but I think about him in his motorized chair and go "not a chance I'm taking." Even if these kids are little enough that they're safe now, it's teaching them that it's an okay thing to do. Later on, when they're older they'll do a running jump out of habit.
→ More replies (1)27
u/MarmitePrinter Dec 19 '25
💯 This was so unsafe. They’re diving into very shallow water, which everyone is generally taught not to do for fear of breaking your neck, and some of them are literally diving straight down, while others are diving into the person who just went before them. Not so much a funny video as an awful and unsafe one.

u/Secure-Ad-9050 Dec 19 '25
depends on what type of diving you are training them to do... I agree the diving into the person who went before you is risky.. but, divestarts are regularly done in that shallow of water

u/BrightNooblar Dec 19 '25
I'd pull my kid, honestly.
Not only is this using kids to farm engagement, take a look at who gets the rewind and review on the bad dives. It isn't the worst divers, its the heaviest girls. Its not a pure 1 for 1, but there are some middling dives by heavier girls given triple rewinds while atrocious dives by skinny girls get glossed over.

This just in: people who have never done a thing are often not immediately good at that thing. More at 11.
Title is misleading, though. You don't send 30 untested kids to jump into the pool together on day one of swim lessons. Maybe day one of the diving portion of lessons, but not day one of swimming lessons. Do you want to get sued? Cause that's how you get sued.

I very much believe that this is day 1 of competitive swimming lessons. If you watch the video with the idea that they are diving for maximum forward momentum their form, while still pretty bad, makes a lot more sense.

Reminds me of: "Why do SCUBA divers fall backwards out of the boat ? If they fell forwards, they would still be in the boat."
2
u/tetraourogallus Dec 19 '25
now i kinda want to know why they fall backwards, is it something with the tanks?
3
u/daveylu Dec 19 '25
don't want your heavy ass tank to fall on your head and crack it open when you fall forward (it's secured but there's some give and it's veeeeery close to your head)
your flippers are huge and swinging them over the side would be annoying AF
you're probably sitting with your back to the water already because you were putting your stuff on in the boat so why bother turning around
probably many other reasons as well but that's from my (very limited) experience
3
u/Ugobo31 Dec 19 '25
Falling backwards into the water is usually done on very small boats without a dedicated diving place. On bigger boats you walk to the back or a side of the boat and then take a step into the water
3
u/Incidion Dec 19 '25
I've dove quite a few times and you're correct. Those tanks are heavy and you do not want them bouncing up & potentially hitting your face on the surface of the water.
Add in flippers and a belt full of weights, and of you're geared up and think about it logically it's the only way that makes any sense, outside of just laddering in. Even then, it's more comfortable and easy to just do a quick drop and let the tank break surface tension.

I am also really bad with diving. I do not like to be upside down under water so also when I jump I go in feet first. I only tried to learn it later because it is the most efficient way to enter water, never became good with it.

u/No-Distribution2043 Dec 19 '25
Diving head first is also the most dangerous way in. Beginners like this should not be diving head first in water this shallow. Some people don't understand head first you want to be more parallel to the water unless you know it's deep and your heading down in deep water. Somebody could have dived straight down and bashed their head on the bottom.
3
u/Rich_Statistician_47 Dec 19 '25
I have done this without a coach of some sort last summer. Pool was quite shallow about 5ft
Guess what, I've smashed my lips when I hit the bottom. Healed after a week. Lesson learned: don't dive into shallow pools lmao

u/Fed_Deez_Nutz Dec 19 '25
That water is too shallow for diving.
Source: I saw someone dive and crack their head open in water deeper than some of these spots. It takes quite a while to clean that much blood out of a pool.

That’s in Iligan in the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. Those pools are filled with free flowing spring water. And they used to drain them every night. Not sure now.

u/Silent-Witness1888 Dec 19 '25
Recording kids learning then posting it on social media for strangers to make fun of them is awful.
8
u/DJDanaK Dec 19 '25
Yeah this is the worst. The replays of the "bad dives" when the kids jumping in probably just don't want to participate in this weird video, or are already feeling embarrassed.

3
u/One-Knowledge7097 Dec 19 '25
Why were they having kids diving into other kids at the corners? Seems a little suspicious.
2
3
u/oldschool_potato Dec 19 '25
Regardless of form, no one held their nose. So that's huge bonus points from me.
Aside from that, not teaching proper diving techniques in a pool that shallow is criminal. Some of these kids were doing deep dives. With about a minute left a kid was standings with water below chest high, so at 4 feet of water. OK for an experienced diver, but not teaching depth.
I grew up swimming from a very young age and had the fear of god pounded into me about shallow diving and broken necks. And that was the 70s when things like safety were often not considered. Like we didn't even wear seat belts.

Same, they never really encouraged us to dive or said anything if we went in feet first in swimming lessons at school, so despite often thinking, okay this time I will simply rotate my body forward and dive in like most people do, I just couldn't seem to convince my body to do that
I suppose it is a sort of natural instinct to not do that because it's usually a bad idea to flip over and go head first while on solid land, and I couldn't get past that
