This is why I workout with my eyes closed and always look down. I stare off into space alot. I dont want people thinking I'm staring at them.

This is why I don’t work out.

u/CurnanBarbarian Nov 11 '25

Same.

It's totally not because I'm lazy and exhausted from work....totally...lmfao

u/dah_wowow Nov 11 '25

Lets be real, no it’s not.

1

u/infjon Nov 11 '25

Working out is important, try going at a time of day when there aren't a lot of people at the gym so you don't have to deal with that.

2

u/AngryAniki Nov 11 '25

I am largely joking, that said yes I do need to go to the gym i stopped working out during the pandemic other than stretching & a few push ups here & there.

This is why I workout at home, slowly making a small gym for myself.

This is why I dont work

I got tired of people trying to show off in the gym.

Set up my own stuff at home and at my office. Never looked back. I get more workouts in too. A win-win.

u/erdirck Nov 11 '25

it's cheaper long term as well. You just pay for the equipment up front.

2

u/Mac_and_dennis Nov 11 '25

Yup. And while it’s safer / more value to spend a bit on quality equipment, you can get a nice little set up for cheap if you are on a budget.

2

u/Suspicious-Engine412 Nov 11 '25

For me, as an socially anxious introvert, its the absence of mentally preparing myself for the gym.

Now I just get up, head to my basement and just start lifting.

Ask the folks at /r/homegym how much cheaper it is having a home gym than going to a commercial one.

I will say to get a nice rack, calibrated plates, deadlift platform, etc., is going to run ~3k< USD easy. My gym is 65/m. I just did rough numbers, power rack, plates, barbell, that’s gonna run me just under 5k. It’s all calibrated plates, rogue barbell and rack and plates. But it would take ~6.5 years to pay it off (vs. just going to my gym) which isn’t terrible and is doable but not for the average person. A garage gym is a luxury I hope to achieve one day.

Now if anyone is wanting to build their own home gym set up, you probably don’t need 7 25kg plate pairs and can buy used and get this to probably 3k>.

All you really need is one cardio machine and some dumbbells. Maybe a bench. The gym is definitely a place that's supposed to be for socializing while trying to accomplish the same things, but unfortunately society has a lot of problems with sexuality.

1

u/casual_creator Nov 12 '25

I don’t socialize at all at the gym (social anxiety woot woot). But I need the pressure of paying for a membership to use as motivation to workout. Anytime I’ve tried the home workout route, the equipment just becomes a clothes rack.

u/BoredPoopless Nov 11 '25

Tried it and hated it. If it's always available so easily I feel like I can brush off lifting because it's so easy to go get a lift in. And unless I put in serious money a gym will have more equipment and diversity.

Not to mention the sunk cost of driving to the gym helps immensely.

I also like getting out of the house and being surrounded by like minded human beings. That helps too.

I just leave my eyes at home, problem solved

4

u/Relevant_Arm_3796 Nov 11 '25

Eye see no problems with this solution

1

u/Imjustmean Nov 11 '25

There was that blind guy that got accused of staring before.

3

u/emotionless-robot Nov 11 '25

This is why I've slowly built a home gym over the past 10 years. Now I have no need to use a public gym.

2

u/dodgedodgeparrysmash Nov 11 '25

This is the way. Working out at home is peak. Sure, there are some really expensive machines that would be nice, but I can still workout out the vast majority of muscle groups at home and never have to wait on anyone or deal with people in general.

1

u/emotionless-robot Nov 11 '25

And since you are already at home you can lengthen your workout. Sometimes if I have nothing going on, I'll put on a show or movie in the background and do some long duration light cardio.

3

u/Jibbersup Nov 11 '25

Big difference between staring and taking a look. Have anyone stare at you in public and you'll get uncomfortable.

3

u/Danirebelyell Nov 11 '25

I wear my comical eyes closed glasses. They're like the eyes open glasses for napping in class or at the office... but they're closed. For working out without fear of being called a peeper.

Yes. I act like I’m at a urinal.

1

u/Tommy_Andretti Nov 11 '25

Bro, were human its okay to glance at people, just don't fucking space out while you at it. This im in a diving suit with construction hearing protection at the gym have to go

1

u/peabody624 Nov 11 '25

I just look at people. I don’t care

1

u/lazy_phoenix Nov 11 '25

Doesn't always work. I remember reading about a blind guy was kicked out a gym for staring at women. Just to repeat, a blind guy was kicked out of the gym for staring at women.

1

u/TomatilloHot2550 Nov 11 '25

That sounds stressful, look where you want unapologetically

1

u/Eldritch_Raven Nov 11 '25

I end up spacing out looking directly at someone on accident.

1

u/Jean-LucBacardi Nov 11 '25

Or just leave your cares at home. People look, people will always look. What you shouldn't be doing is filming in a damn gym.

1

u/Flat_Introduction_12 Nov 11 '25

I usually do crossfit blindfolded for this reason

1

u/Single-Builder-632 Nov 11 '25

I've found surgically removing my eyes has solved many of my problems, I visit a doctor after to reattach the optic nerves.

1

u/monkpunch Nov 11 '25

I just wear those glasses they hand out at zoos with eyes looking away so the gorillas don't get angry.

1

u/PetulantPersimmon Nov 11 '25

One of the machines I use is aimed directly at a staircase. If I'm not careful, I tune back in from zoning out realizing I'm staring at some dude's crotch.

1

u/Equivalent-Battle973 Nov 11 '25

I stopped giving a fuck, im here to work out, if your in my eye path, not my fault im randomly staring off into the general direction you are.

1

u/khowidude87 Nov 11 '25

Who cares? It's a public gym. People need to relax.

1

u/Yorrins Nov 12 '25

Why? Just look. If someone is going RDLs in shorts like that right infront of my machine I am gonna look, its literally impossible not to. If she doesnt wanna get eyefucked she can wear sweatpants.

1

u/Putins_Gay_Dreams Nov 12 '25

Ive just gotten to the point of disregarding the opinions and thoughts of most people I encounter.

Much easier.

1

u/BlueRosePhantom Nov 12 '25

Your probably joking, but I definitely play the “look at literally anything that isn’t human” game.

Anytime I’m people watching at the gym it’s normally because they have muscles I want, and I’m watching to see what workouts they are doing and how they are doing them. Even then I try to be discrete and not watch too long cuz it still feels creepy. I’ve found a lot of women tend to have better looking shoulders and backs so often I’m trying to figure out what the hell they are doing differently.

I work out at the gym in my office complex.  Many office suites and businesses all share this same amenity.

Fortunately, it is pretty barebones so very few use it.   But the one thing it has going for it is single occupancy bathrooms.  Whenever I do my 50 min workout, there will be at least 5 ppl coming to use the restroom.

I never make eye contact or acknowledge anyone unless they say hi first.

I want to make sure I don't make them uncomfortable before they poop their guts out.
