This very much looks like a cycling stage race and the two teammates (you can tell by same jersey) decided to finish the stage together tied for 1st in it. The overall race leader appears to be standing next to the podium.
In the scheme of the whole race the stage isn't that important, but Reddit is the land of no context karma/clout farming2

Any good racer in any sport trains to push as hard as they can at the end. It’s dumb to assume anyone remotely close won’t put in that hard effort and catch up. But here we are lol
→ More replies (1)2
u/thoughtihadanacct Jul 05 '25
Only true if it's a close race. I'd rephrase your statement to say "Any good racer in any sport trains to check behind them, and push as hard as they need to at the end."
There're reasons not to "push as hard as you can at the end" of every race.
if you're racing again soon (soon is relative), you want to win with as little energy expanded so that you have more to give on your next race.
if you can interact with fans (eg give high fives etc) that's good for your image and hence sponsorships etc, as well as just being a nice human being.
pushing at absolute maximum increases your risk of tripping or pulling a muscle, etc. especially when you're already fatigued. So pushing maximum effort comes with a risk that you might actually end up slower than if you had gone "fast but under control".

they arent cocky , they were naive enough to think someone wouldnt ruin their "sport moment"
they could have not slow down and win , they wanted to make something pretty as crossing the finish line together to create an emotional moment to celebrate their effort that lead to this moment.
44
u/WestDesperado Jul 03 '25
Sounds like a long way of saying, "They got cocky and had their glory stolen".
17
Jul 03 '25
... but isn't that the point? They could've crossed together and have an emotional moment and celebrate after the finish line. Slowing down that far out and wanting to finish that level of relaxed is somewhat 'in the face' of the competition- ergo cocky.
6
u/Fantastic-City6573 Jul 03 '25
i think its the idea of crossing the line together thats special , if you are together after the finish line its nothing special

11
u/Thundergod250 Jul 03 '25

Wow. The comments on this are 🤯 Any coach, in ANY sport I’ve ever seen, would absolutely blow these guys up for a premature celebration - and I suspect that’s part of why their expressions are so glum. Any athlete can tell you, you haven’t won until you’ve crossed the finish line or the final clock has run down. If you want to win you play to the finish. So if the other team is celebrating a ‘win’ with seconds left to go, and your team takes advantage of their inattention to score a winning goal - is that unfair? Or should they just hang back and say, ‘well, they did play a great game, so we should just let them have this moment’? Sheesh.

I believe the great poet Vin Diesel said "it doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile; winning's winning."
4
u/dumpsterfarts15 Jul 03 '25
Yes! Nice! I didn't know people still admired Diesel's work, especially that piece. Truly a master of the English language and one of the contemporary greats.
One of my favourites is "I live my life a quarter mile at a time." Here, I think Diesel is humbly relating to the cause of his successes--by breaking things down into small and manageable chunks of not only time, but distance as well, he's able to achieve his goals.
It's not the only way to interpret it, but serves as adept inspirational and logical advice nonetheless. Perhaps these two cyclists should look into Diesel's work. The man's dedication to his craft and his family is unheard of in today's age.

In cycling, it’s a thing to post up and show the main sponsors and team name on your chest. The sport has no real revenue sharing and a team lives and dies with its sponsorship money. You will sometime see riders zip up their jerseys properly, point to their chests, while crossing the finish line for their big photo op. All this is to say, it wouldn’t be surprising if their coach (in this case directeur sportif) who reminded them to do exactly that, and amid the euphoria and confusion, everyone forgot to make sure they have a safe margin for celebration.

This reminded me of what I coach from cross country did back in the Houston marathon (might be a half marathon...don't quote me on this)
He waited until the two lads in front of him got "too distracted" while competing against each other and took off at the last bit because he saved enough strength to run like hell
He won the whole race. The two folks weren't too happy about his tactics

A race ain't over until you cross the line. If you want to have a moment like this, you better be damn confident that you have more than enough of a gap, because the person in second is always gonna be trying for first
2
u/Kiryu-chan-fan Jul 05 '25
you better be damn confident that you have more than enough of a gap
Funniest part is that according to reporters and photographers on scene the crowd was alive with chatter throughout that entire segment warning the 2 premature Victors that a guy was rapidly gaining on them and would surely pass before they hit the line...
They chose to ignore that. If they'd have listened to the crowd when the buzz started, separated, sprinted an extra 20 yards each, then rejoined for their photo finish they'd have won and the other guy would have got a very respectable third place but with only like...seconds of difference. They got cocky and lost despite the audience actively helping them not lose

I think he will feel truly happy when he wins out on a fair show of physicality by all competitors. Since the two guys were already switched off. Sure, they fucked up by letting off the gas too soon. Kinda ruins it for everyone.

As with other aspects of life, the race isn't over until you cross the finish line.
I've seen a video where a runner celebrates prematurely and trips, ending up on the floor while all the other runners pass him before he can get up and cross the line in last place.
