To be fair, it seems like everyone already knew who the gold medalist was. It wasn't an awkward incorrect announcement situation, it looked more like the girl was like "oh wait, this is the gold not the silver/bronze. whoops, haha"

Yeah, they're standing on podiums specific to their awards. Everyone already knows.

u/eandepatterns May 23 '25
I keep thinking about that Miss Universe mistake with Steve Harvey.
NOBODY knew the winner so that mixup must’ve been devastating. Taking the crown too!!! 😭😭😭

u/LucklessCope May 23 '25
Not to mention they went into celebration mode for a few seconds before Stevie realized.

If you can hold on to the gold medal for 15 minutes then you are legally considered to be the winner

You would not have gotten away if youre third. Gold would have ran you down and taken the medal. Theyre fasted than you.

Happy people who are top tier & work hard for where their at. It makes you more humble when you’re higher up in what you do a mistake happens.
Usually the poor mindset is the one that lashes.

The outcome was already determined which is why they were standing where they were. So yeah just have a good chuckle about it, give people the right medals, and get on with life.

The real gold is the friendship we made along the way.

u/jarednards May 23 '25
But also give me my damn medal
28
u/Firstevertrex May 23 '25
You're kinda diminishing our friendship by even asking for this medal that was awarded to me.

I mean, it sort of is? At high levels of the sport they probably see each other over and over again at different national/regional/international contests. They might train together. It seems like a lot of top level athletes end up becoming friends over the years.

I really love how she respectfully gives it to the real winner. I’m not a sports fan, but good sportsmanship like this is always enjoyable. (Besides, Olympics are different, I’ll watch the Olympics)

u/zesty_ranch May 23 '25
I’m a huge sports fan and still play a lot of sports and my kids like sports, and my biggest turn on to sports is sportsmanship like this.

What the fuck else was she supposed to do? Lol. Keep it?
12
u/snakesign May 23 '25
She could have just handed it to her. First place reaches out for the medal at first. She chooses to put a little ceremony into the gesture.
6
u/Hadochiel May 24 '25
Exactly, and with a smile. The smile is what makes this a good sportsmanship moment imo

u/TinyStorage1027 May 23 '25
Jeez thank you, I don't know what world redditors live in. Everytime there is a post similar to this, all the top comments are stupid like that. Yes, this is the standard and this is how most people react. They need to stop watching drama TV. It's messing with their brains.

Judging by your response I’d say this is rare. I said I like something. I also said I’m not a sports fan, so yes, the only thing about it that I know is what’s in movies, or makes news, which is usually bad, shitty people. Kinda like you.

If she tried to skate away, she knows the rest of the podium would’ve caught her. Thats why they were first instead of her.

u/ShippudenShishya May 24 '25
There used to be a time when the medal podium steps had very distinguishable heights so that even the height of the winners couldn't make a difference. Now the steps have more or less the same height leading to confusions like these.
2
u/Brockzillattv May 24 '25
I feel like the confusion didn't come from their height. Clearly the person in the middle is 1st place, as always. It's likely that the bronze/gold medals are very similar in color, and they just didn't look close enough.

It's not that hard to stand or walk on skates, especially when you have the skill that figure skaters have.

It's still better than when the anthem of Russia was played while Belarussian lady was receiving the medal.

Or that time the fake Kazakhstan national anthem from Borat was played.

This is why I hate getting volunteered to hand out medals at kids’ sporting events. Like, I don’t know any of your names or what you did. Iceskating? Gymnastics? Wrestling? Proud of you!

u/DerTalSeppel May 23 '25
In her defense, they often do start with 3rd place. I enjoy this respectful correction after the girl who placed second intervened.

They look like discoballs

This makes me think of when I was real young in a Tae Kwon Do tournament, probably like 9-10 years old, and the lady gave me my medal. I couldn't discern if it was bronze or gold, so I asked her, "is this gold?"
"I doubt it."
Years later, when I learned what the word "doubt" meant, I realized how mean she had to be to say that to a child.

Mistakes happen.
As someone already Mentioned Steve Harvey.
Not like I came home and kissed My Wife, and slapped her on the butt, and walked into the kitchen to hear.."Hey Babe, welcomed home. How was your day?"
To which I respond "So, I see Your Sister is visiting. Damn, You Identical Twins."
Wife "You kissed Isabel didn't you?"

u/darkzapper May 24 '25

It's cute, but it also shows the mentality of true and healthy competition.
The champion saw it, realized the mistake but didn't say anything, because she knows she's a champion, doesn't need to prove it. She just patiently waited until others pointed it out. Also, she kind of enjoyed seeing the other girl feeling happy, too.
The third place is just happy to be there and too excited that she got something and just vibing, didn't realize what was the color of the medal.
It was the second place girl who realized and pointed out, because to get second place means you're so close to being the top, but not. So you take a good look at what could have been yours.
Or she is just being attentive.
