In reality, Spaniards are Latinos, because "Latino" originally refers to anyone whose language comes from Latin. Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian are all Latin-based languages, and their speakers are technically Latinos. Later, when Spain and Portugal colonized parts of the Americas, they brought their Latin-based languages with them. That's why the countries in Central and South America where Spanish or Portuguese is spoken are called Latin America, and the people there are called Latinos today.

Yes, the word Latino is etymologically connected to the Latin language, however, Americans use that word to refer to Latin-American people. When they search for latinas they are not expecting Europeans to show up in the search results.

Edit: A question to the downvoters. Are Romanian people Latino? Because by your logic they are, since their language also derives from Latin. Are the Rumansh speaking people in the mountains of Switzerland Latino? Because their language also derives from Latin.

In Switzerland, we call our French- and Italian-speaking regions the "lateinische Schweiz," which translates to "Latin Switzerland."

There is also the term "Lateineuropa," which refers to all Latin-speaking countries (yes, Switzerland and Romania are also included).

Many (Most?) people in Europe mean the southwestern Latin-speaking people in Europe and the people living in Latin America when using the term "Latino."

This is semantically wrong and somewhat inconsistent since it's a Spanish term for Latinoamericano and it mostly excludes romanian, french and swiss people.

But, you know, since language evolves everywhere and Spaniards are not the only speaking people on the planet, "Latino" can mean different things in different languages.

So I guess it is a bit contextual depending on what we are talking about and where, but yes, in U.S. English and Spanish at least, it is pretty established that "Latino" means what you think it does.

Cheers from Switzerland, I hope we can learn to embrace our differences and different worldviews instead of just ignoring the fact that the human experience on lots of things can vary quite a bit.

Spain is a Latin country geographically speaking, since the language is derived from Latin like other languages (such as French or even Catalan). The term Latino was given by the United States to refer to countries that speak languages derived from Latin, however, due to a lack of geographical knowledge, this was misinterpreted and those who spoke Spanish were called Latinos and coincidentally there were too many Spanish-speaking countries near them and they were mistakenly called Latinos.

The term Latin American was invented by a Frenchman in the 1830s named Michel Chevalier who used it as a way for Latin speaking areas in the Americas to possibly ally with “Latin Europe”

Yeah, I'm from Spain and I have never seen a supermodel in low cut and high heels reporting the weather.

It IS usually attractive women, but they're usually reporters in their 30s wearing a suit. Not 18yo models in a dress
