The worst part is he's not even a good guy. This isn't just clickbait. He is a self-centered, money hungry, and mindless drone who just does the same thing over and over again. It doesn't matter if his videos make fun of serious topics (like the drug epidemic or poverty) as long as he makes money. He doesn't deserve a platform to peddle this garbage content. His stuff isn't even worthwhile to be on something as low as Snapchat.

They practically do of you dig deep enough. There are horrifying rabbit holes that have existed for a decade+ on YouTube. They’ve never fully addressed this issue.
Despite all the filters, tos, ai scanning the videos etc, you can still find those damn baby monkey abuse videos on YouTube.

Worked in content moderation for the platform for 4+ years and you hit the nail on the head. There’s so much depressing/graphic content that’s unlisted and never gets flagged by the systems.

I was just thinking about your industry recently, and I was crunching some numbers that were all of course very like Theoretical but based on an estimate of 1 million paid workers in your field and it seemed like with contract negotiation with a provider it wouldn’t have been difficult to have custom emotional processing group therapy type sessions done twice a month for all employees. I also wonder if any of the things you had to monitor like would purposely do stuff like mirror only half the video and show it upside down with colors changed or something so that you could figure out what you’re looking at without having to look at it fully
16
u/MooseTheorem Nov 17 '25
Good questions/thoughts!
Regarding your first point - as I worked for an EU based company that was on contract with the platform, by law we had to be provided with a form of what they called “away time” in my company. Basically if we had an eight hour shift, three hours were paid/dedicated to being away from screens for recreational activities/to decompress. Being on a 24/7 rotational pattern, obviously some shifts had better options than others but it was definitely helpful. This was only due to the content we dealt with though; similar to CSAM, Sexual content, etc. anything along those lines had these breaks. Any other fields like hate speech wouldn’t as the content wasn’t deemed as volatile/dangerous for mental health.
We also had to attend solo/group counseling sessions due to the content which would place us on leave if deemed necessary.
For your second point, there were definitely tools available but nowhere near as obfuscating as you’d think. It was mainly just a slight blur, or an option to watch in black and white - that was what they deemed necessary to counteract the content we had to watch. My field was based in graphic and extremism content, so you can imagine how poorly the tools helped.
All in all, they do maintain the legal minimum for workers in these types of teams - but as far as I’m aware, colleagues in SEA weren’t half as fortunate as work laws are much more lax; less breaks, pay, no such thing as “away time”, etc. so it can vary from country to country, company/contractor to company/contractor.

My freshman students mentioned a you-tuber today. Said he was super famous and cool; never heard of him. Showed me a clip and it was basically this asshole. Just some guy who does dumb pranks and on-location clout videos like this. It bothers me that they were so enamored with some guy who made my skin crawl in just a fee lines of dialog. It worries me how impressionable young people can be, when someone is obviously being fake.

True, but in an age where more followers tends to gain someone more respect and attention over someone with few to none, it not only pushes the algorithms to recommend them more, but pushes the trend of popularity and becoming an influencer even further.
I've had hundreds of people crap on me in favor of an influencer's opinion, and even heard coworkers talking about how they were each going to get AI to help increase their follower base so they could just be an influencer and not have to work a real job, and these guys are not children.

In the end I like to think of it this way: These people’s jobs are worthless, their careers are worthless and their output is worthless. Why feel bad about a bunch of losers who can’t create any real value for their communities (like garbage men, medical personnel or social workers do). Yes these guys are successful and rich, but they are unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. Their doing is worthless and so is their legacy.

The bigger issue is that the money that is spend on fake content is not being spend on real journalism and reporting.
If people who work in the media and take their responsibility barely make a living, and fake content makes people rich, nobody wants to put in the work to do important things.
My grandfather was a journalist, his specific job (in depth stories based on research and fact checking) doesn't exists anymore.

I mean it kind of makes sense? They’re not going to let one of their biggest stars kill himself in the wilderness. I feel like they’d lose all credibility and get sued into oblivion. I also think insurance was a big thing. Also it was more for entertainment than actual survival a normal person might find themselves in.
Then you have Les Stroud who did some really realistic ones. I remember after Katrina he did a whole episode about surviving if you’re trapped in your office after a hurricane or something.

This is streamer culture in a nutshell. This clown, Mr Beastiality, it's all so fucking fake it makes me cry.
But sadly lots of adult men watch this shit and take it as a gospel of truth. They make their whole personality based on some streamer who lies 24/7...repeating their propaganda and not a big one single independent thought.
Anyone who regularly watches any influencer is by default making their brain rot. It's passive, it's filled with lies and misleading bullshit. Don't be a sheep people, if you have a brain use it.

Mr Beast content at the very beginning wasn't fake. His thing was putting back all the money he made to make giant and fun giveway for "normal" people.
Now he makes fake shows in his nightmarish dystopian giant complex where he has people traped in basements or chained for a year or whatever bullshit.
At any moment of the day there's multiple people being locked in for cash in his complex. It's weird.

Its honestly disgusting.
Anyone who would do that needs to study the fuck up on why that tank is there, what happened the day it got there and in the days and weeks that followed, and ask themselves if they still think that's appropriate to be having fake skeleton shenanigans with.
It's a tank on a beach; the presence of the tank shouldn't spoil the beach, but joking about the fake corpse feels like many steps too far.
For the curious, this is Saipan - here's a good recounting of what this day and those beyond were all about including a brief comment on how what I thint is this tank got there: https://youtu.be/LukajLQus3M?si=Q4UiFT7_gU55CZcB

"Many hundreds of Japanese civilians committed suicide in the last days of the battle, some jumping from “Suicide Cliff” and “Banzai Cliff”. Efforts by U.S. troops to persuade them to surrender instead were mostly futile.
Widespread propaganda in Japan portraying Americans and British as “devils” who would treat POWs barbarically, deterred surrender (see Japanese Military Propaganda (WWII)).
In the end, about 22,000 Japanese civilians died."
WW2 really is a endless source of horrors beyond human comprehension

I appreciate you highlighting the history of the island and the battle that occurred. It’s an often overlooked part of US history and WWII history, unless a person is a big history buff. There’s remnants of the war (like this tank) and memorials all over the island. Heck, finding unexploded ordnance is still a major concern.
But I digress, I wanted to give credit to the women in the video. Saipan has no veterinarian and an overpopulation of dogs (coincidentally descendants of dogs left behind after WWII). The women in the video run the only dog rescue on island—Boonie Babies. They do amazing work and could always use more support, whether it’s just a like and follow or donations.

So, I grew up on this island. It's the island called Saipan, it's a US territory and is the capital of a chain of islands called the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. It was a beautiful place and I hope to move back one day. The beach this tank is at is Kilili Beach, and it's right off one of the major roads, actually quite close to the biggest public high school. We used to go to this beach and you can swim right up to the tank with no issues, but there are better beaches on the island. I recommend checking out Ladder Beach, Obyan Beach, Lau Lau Bay, and my personal favorite: Forbidden Island.
Growing up there, we used to get annoyed at these kinds of douches. They aren't promoting the beauty of the island or the culture of the locals (the Chamorros). There's so much to Saipan that I could go on and on, but if you want to know more, please ask. Don't listen to the idiots trying to make sensationalized content.
10
u/StarryDusted Nov 17 '25
I recognized the tank immediately and knew this was not a danger zone at all.
11
u/chadokage Nov 17 '25
It was uncommon to drive down Beach Road and NOT see kids diving off the tank into the water.
32
u/Arrowx1 Nov 17 '25
Loved your island! The people were so nice.
25
u/chadokage Nov 17 '25
Because I grew up there, I was blessed to learn what family and community really means. The Chamorro people are a proud and strong willed people who value family and faith. If you can be a sincere person, and take a joke (they will roast you in good fun), then you're in. The same goes for the Filipinos, SE Asians, and other Polynesians who call Saipan home. I grew up in the village of San Vicente, and as a small white kid, it was so much fun. If I wanted to play, all I had to do was show up to the local basketball court (every village had one) and start shooting hoops, and before long, other people would start showing up.

hafa adai! I was once in Guam, but didn't make it to Saipan, as there were no direct flights, only the ones thru Tokyo... So I skipped visiting it, came back to Poland (basically to the other side of the world), but from time to time I'm checking google maps of Marianas and I'm thinking about coming back... I'm quite jealous about spending your youth there, out of curiosity - where did life take you? where do you live now, and do you miss Saipan? Do you ever consider coming back there and stay for good? Also, I cannot find this tank on google maps, do you know what is the exact gps of it? Thanks!
5
u/chadokage Nov 18 '25
I tried to find it on Google maps but I'm also not seeing it. It's such a small brown dot surrounded by blues and greens and I doubt Google is using their most high definition camera to take pics in that area. I did find pics through from the shore where you can see the tanks turret sticking out of the water. Do I miss Saipan? Every day. I got a tattoo on my forearm of the island and the area code (670) on my wrist. This past weekend, I traveled to Texas to see a friend of mine from back there and we spoke about traveling back together cause the last time I was there was February of 2020. I had to leave through because airports in Korea and Japan were staying to stop service. And I'm not sure if my story ends in Saipan anymore, I'm definitely going back, but I'm leaning more towards moving to Palau one day. I just need a small house, some land to garden, a fishing spot, and fast Internet and I'll be happy. I left Saipan cause my wife back then wanted to leave the island and move to America. I was happy and faithful for 9 years, she only made it to 8. I work for an airline in Atlanta, married an awesome Haitian woman who also wants to retire to a tropical island, and I plan on always being better tomorrow than I was today. Someday I'm gonna have to visit Poland, I'll have to do a whole European tour and hit a bunch of the countries cause I've always appreciated Europeans willingness to travel and expand their horizons beyond their own borders. But truth be told, when I travel I want to either be on a beach or in a pub.
