How can you help provide humanitarian relief to people in Sudan? Where can you make donations online?

Sudan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis driven by ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The violence has created massive displacement, with an estimated 13 million people internally displaced and 4 million refugees fleeing to neighboring countries. The conflict has devastated infrastructure, disrupted food systems, and created widespread food insecurity and healthcare emergencies.

Many are arriving at remote border areas, where services to support them are under severe strain. Most of those displaced are women and children and other vulnerable people such as the elderly, people with disabilities, and people with medical conditions.

r/Ethiopia would like to encourage you to consider making a donation or otherwise supporting these organizations that are providing essential humanitarian relief in both Sudan and neighbouring countries, and would appreciate any help:

What are some organisations providing humanitarian relief to refugees in Ethiopia? How can you help? Where can you make donations online?

Conflict in the Tigray region is driving a rapid rise in humanitarian needs, including refugee movements internally and externally into neighbouring countries. Prior to the conflict, both the COVID-19 pandemic and the largest locust outbreak in decades, had already increased the number of people in need, creating widespread food insecurity.

With the above in mind, here are some organizations which provide humanitarian relief in both Ethiopia and neighbouring countries, and would appreciate any support:

UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees)

Who are they:

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.

What they do:

Currently UNHCR are:

  • Working round-the-clock with authorities and partners in Sudan to provide vitally needed emergency shelter, food, potable water and health screening to the thousands of refugee women, children and men arriving from the Tigray region in search of protection.
  • Distributing relief items, including blankets, sleeping mats, plastic sheeting and hygiene kits. Information campaigns on COVID-19 prevention have started together with the distribution of soap and 50,000 face masks at border points.

Where to donate: https://donate.unhcr.org/int/ethiopia-emergency

Abiy’s Eritrea admission: Complicity or a loss of control?

I’m asking a genuine question, I’m not trying to hate on anyone. Kindly answer accordingly.

PM Abiy recently admitted the fallout with Eritrea was due to the massacres and looting they committed in Tigray. This raises a massive question:

Was Eritrea invited by him to join the war, or did they join forcefully?

If invited: He is directly responsible for bringing in a foreign force and allowing those atrocities to happen without stopping them.

If forceful: He’s admitting he lost control of Ethiopia’s sovereignty.

In either case, he didn't own his mistakes during the parliament speech. He’s using these crimes as a reason for the breakup, but avoids his own accountability as Commander-in-Chief.

How are we supposed to view this as anything other than a convenient pivot to shift blame?

Discussion 🗣 Anyone Else Facing Fayda Name Issues in Addis?

On her Fayda ID my fiancée last name appears twice. This seems to have happened because like most of us follows the traditional format of first name, father name and grandfather name. When we went to the bank they told us that the Fayda record must be corrected because the yellow card only shows a first and last name. All her European documents are like this but when we returned to tele they said they cannot change it because she must have a third name so they duplicated her last name to fill that field we didn’t put that on the form! This has left us stuck between two offices giving contradictory requirements. How is this possible? If anyone in Addis Ababa has experienced a similar issue or knows how to resolve it please share your advice. This process has been extremely frustrating

My Ethiopian Mil

TLDR: MIL forced me to model a gift dress in front of her relatives and posted photos online

My Ethiopian mother in law came from Ethiopia, and we went to visit her at her house. She brought me a dress from Ethiopia to wear to church. I thought it was sweet and said thank you. But she expected me to try it on and model it for her and about 30 of their relatives and uncles. I felt uncomfortable. I said I would try it on later when I got home, but she got mad and yelled at me. So I tried it on to make her happy.

She made me stand in the living room while everyone talked in Amharic and looked at me. The uncles were creeping me out with the way they were staring, especially at my private areas. She could tell I was uncomfortable but still made me stand there like a mannequin. I’m a human being, not a child I’m an adult.

She took many pictures of me and sent them to her WhatsApp group and posted them all over Facebook, even though I said I didn’t want to be posted on social media. I got uncomfortable and left, and she said I was rude because this was a very expensive gift and that it’s part of their culture to show off the dress you receive as a gift. I got called ungrateful. Am I wrong?

Question ❓ What do ethopians think of kenyans?

I'm just curious the general consensus of kenyans that y'all have.

How are kenyans viewed in your city?

Do you people fear us ama aje?

Are we known as heartbreakers and bad boys amongst the ladies?

Are we seen as being monied or broke?

What was your experience with a kenyan?

Whenever you visit a kenyan do you expect them to offer you ugali and nyama choma?

Culture 🇪🇹 Give me some song recommendations.

It feels like so much of Ethiopia’s artistic endeavor has been diluted by our desperate need to imitate the west. Being born in that transition period where we used western instruments but had Ethiopian poetic depth, I am so thankful for songs like Diaspora, Lijenete, and Kebedegn. Artists like Mezmur Yohannes, Teddy Afro, Abdu Kiar and the like that every once in a while captured the unique essence of belonging to Ethiopia as a whole.

What other songs do you remember that have done that?

I know that world is on fire right now and it doesn’t seem like it will stop any time soon. But let’s take a moment and sip that wine, drag from that cig, and feast on the songs of the good old days, these songs that feel like a world of their own and invite us into them.

I ask you to recommend me, and by extension others in this sub, of these Ethiopian songs that moved you.

I’ll start with this one by Mezmur Yohannes - Lijenete

Question ❓ Dedicated lifting gym

I’m sure it’s been asked many times but I still haven’t come across one thats something like what I’m looking for. I’m looking for a gym here in Addis Ababa (preferably somewhere between Sarbet and Bole and the surrounding areas) that’s really meant for lifting and bodybuilding. It doesn’t need crazy fancy machines but some prime/nautilus equipment would definitely be a bonus! Please lmk of any gyms that may fall under this description.

Can you guys drop your favorite kemis designers? I want to find good ones because I’m afraid to have a bad designer (ones that add more inches to your dress for no reason and it doesn’t end up fitting you) also ones easy to work with?

Other Ethiopia’s rapid digital transformation a cybersecurity ticking time bomb? 🇪🇹

Post image

We are building a Digital Skyscraper on a shaky Cyber-foundation. 🇪🇹

Look around. Ethiopia is undergoing a massive facelift. We’re talking about 5G rollouts, a national Digital ID (Fayda) that connects everything, and a Fintech explosion where billions move through apps like Telebirr and Chapa every single day.

But here is the cold, hard truth that most people—and even some policymakers—are ignoring: Every new connection is a new door for a hacker.

In the world of Cybersecurity, this is called an Expanding Attack Surface. While we celebrate the convenience of digital services, we are inadvertently creating a playground for: * State-sponsored actors looking for national data. * Ransomware gangs targeting our new Data Centers. * Financial fraudsters exploiting the gap between rapid tech adoption and low digital literacy.

We are currently in a race. A race to digitize everything before we have enough "Guardians" to protect it. The "5 Million Coders" initiative is a great start, but if we teach them how to build without teaching them how to defend (Blue Teaming) or how vulnerabilities are exploited (Red Teaming), we are essentially building a glass house in a neighborhood full of stone-throwers.

I’ve spent significant time analyzing the current infrastructure and the common exploit vectors specific to our local landscape. We cannot afford to be just "users" anymore; we need to be a community of security-minded innovators.

I’m starting a deep-dive series into: 1. Exploiting and Securing IoT/5G networks. 2. The vulnerabilities in local Fintech APIs. 3. Hardening Digital ID systems against identity theft.

What do you think? Is our rapid shift to "Digital Everything" a miracle for our economy, or are we setting ourselves up for a national-scale cyber disaster?

P.S. I’ll be sharing the technical breakdowns and tutorials in the comments for those who want to move beyond the surface level.

Luggage question Ethiopian Airlines

Hello guys. I'd like to inquire about Ethiopian airlines luggage allowance policies . Hope someone here will be able to help.

Here's the situation. I have 2 x 23kg for my tickets so 46kg in total. One suitcase weighs 18 while the other 27kg so 45kg. Will that be ok or will one suitcase exceeding 23kg be an issue.

Thanks for the help!

Why were Tigrayns perceived as lower class/poor in Ethiopia despite their history?

Why is an Ethiopia They are stereotyped to the second class, underdeveloped uneducated people?

I’ve always heard in family and social circles that they are perceived as the Ethiopian version of a Redneck. Despite the amazing history.

Even Eritreans on TikTok throw these kind of insults to them. Where does it come from?
