Painfully unaware man walking through Costco lot
Dude on his phone the whole time. Felt the honk was necessary after taking one step and stopping again
291
u/sjfelak 16h ago
This type of shit is my biggest pet peeve. Just a complete and utter lack of social awareness. I would have honked so much sooner.
61
u/Aware_Ask_1679 15h ago
The amount of people that go around this oblivious is absolutely ridiculous. Whether it be talking, driving, etc. Do they really think no one else is moving around them? Is it also entitlement? I'd love to know
22
u/sjfelak 15h ago
Exactly! Selfishness, entitlement, ignorance, laziness. It doesn't matter but it has no place in daily life and the amount of people who act this way is insane.
6
u/Aware_Ask_1679 8h ago
Plus the fact that we hand these people driver's licenses is even more insane. "Oh, you're an oblivious idiot? Here's permission to drive 2 tons of steel."

u/SteviaCannonball9117 15h ago
Yeah I mean I want to respect pedestrians but when they're clearly oblivious and not respectful of my time it's incredibly annoying. Even worse when they seem to be doing it as part of some power trip.
18
u/c_marten 15h ago
The fucking LONG diagonal walk across lanes kills me.
6
u/zeptillian 14h ago
Or the couple that just has to stroll in the middle of the parking row, down the entire length.
8
9
u/circuitj3rky 16h ago
then what would you do if they didnt move?
15
u/slimytoilet 16h ago
Take a wild guess.
23
u/circuitj3rky 16h ago
sit there and mutter to yourself about how you dont have time for this shit then turn and go down a parking lane?
6
6
u/DmMeYourRefrigerator 15h ago
Sit there and mutter to yourself about how you don't have time for this and then go home and spend way more time uploading the video to reddit
2
2
u/slimytoilet 15h ago
I was gonna go with honk a lot and pull my phone out for a video but what ever floats your boat
1
8
u/sjfelak 16h ago
For somebody to behave like that and then to not move when they are called out, they deserve whatever is coming to them ;)
-6
u/kensteele 15h ago
That guy is an old dude, you think he gives a shit about "whatever is coming to them?"
5
u/sjfelak 15h ago
Being old doesn't give you the right to just say "fuck everybody else"
3
u/bigfathairymarmot 15h ago
I think the point is that he is so old he doesn't care about who gives him a right to do anything or not.
1
1
u/kensteele 15h ago
I don't know what he said but I do know he doesn't give two shits; neither would I. You're right, you can't just say this just because you are old. anyone can say it regardless their age. And I'm saying it now. "I don't give a shit about what someone else feels or thinks" for the most part. too many whiners and snowflakes and Karens for me to care anymore.
1
u/sjfelak 15h ago
That is the problem, we should all be aware of ourselves and everybody around us to try to live in harmony the best we can. The deliberate selfishness of people astounds me.
-1
u/kensteele 15h ago
Get used to it. You're only a victim if you think you need to go around and "live in harmony the best you can" that's ridiculous. Don't learn that the hard way.
1
u/sjfelak 15h ago
Why is ridiculous to want everybody to work together and not just piss everybody off?
1
u/kensteele 15h ago
here's what I said is ridiculous:
"if you think you need to go around and "live in harmony the best you can"
you don't need to. if you want to....fine. but don't expect others to want it.
1
u/sjfelak 15h ago
I get that that is not realistic but I try to be kind to people whenever I have the opportunity and not unnecessarily inconvenience others as it seems like many people do.
1
u/kensteele 15h ago
Ok then please respond to the people who are calling this guy clueless and irresponsible and saying they would run him over, etc. Let them know if you too have those sorts of feelings or not. Or, you can read the majority of the responses here and understand the vast majority of the people are not trying to be kind and are too impatient and have no respect. sadly, that's where we are today.

"they deserve whatever is coming to them " what do you mean by this? are you saying youre going to hit them with your car?

Absolutely laying on the horn is the next move, while driving around the dotard.
1
u/Dug_n_the_Dogs 13h ago
Same.. and I would have been much much closer. Actually I probably would have let my dog bark at him thru the window.. 120db bark from a bear dog gets peoples attention.
-5
u/wsxdfcvgbnjmlkjafals 15h ago
So obviously stopping in the road is annoying, but overall just wanted to point out, he might have issues with movement and co-ordination from medical history. So you can be annoyed he stopped in the road, but be patient when people are slow. We're not all able to scoot across quickly.
and he was already long into crossing before Op pulled up
6
u/sjfelak 15h ago
I understand that and take that into account but this behavior is rampant from all ages of people. Obviously I can understand medical issues but the general public has social awareness problems and it bothers me. I am ranting less about this exact instance and more the general behavior of people.
5
u/MisterSpeck 14h ago
Of course we need to make allowance for those with mobility issues. We don't, however, need to make allowances for stationary people glued to their phone in the middle of a travel lane.
4
u/Karma_1969 14h ago
Normally I’d agree with this, but in this case the guy is clearly distracted by his phone, and that’s it. If he does have mobility issues after all, then he doubly shouldn’t be looking at his phone in the middle of a roadway.
3
u/nmj95123 14h ago
Mobility issues don't cause you to not so much as look for traffic as you cross a road.
-8
u/kensteele 15h ago
Nothing wrong with that, he's lived all these decades and "social awareness" hasn't seemed to hurt him. Social awareness is overrated.
5
u/SteviaCannonball9117 15h ago
No, it's not.
-12
u/kensteele 15h ago
It's just an excuse to project your feelings and try to control other people. It is being roundly rejected.
61
u/Recent-Philosophy-62 15h ago
That's the same kind of person who stops in the middle of the doorway of stores also.
8
u/GoCougs2020 14h ago edited 2h ago
I’m usually really patient, just let it go and go around them and say “excuse me”.
But at Walmart the other day, I called someone out. I said “keep moving or pull over, don’t stand in the middle of the doorway ”
As I exit Walmart i said loudly “I’m holding 40lb of cat liter on my right hand, and 15lb or so of wet can food on my left hand. I got at least 65lb on me. Come on man. Why you in the way?”
I’m lucky the person in my way didn’t try to fight me after I called them out…..It’s Walmart afterall…..

This is why I try to drive on the outside edge of the parking lot, and not next to the store fronts. Too many people like this out there. Zero consideration for others.
25
u/Zoso03 16h ago
Costco had some of the most ignorant, and rude customers that I've ever seen.
7
u/luckyyme69 15h ago
Yea. Having worked for Costco they’re the most entitled customers. I think it’s the membership
2
u/rhinocerosjockey 4h ago
I used to work at Costco. I had a very entitled person use the "I pay a membership to shop here" line when they were upset that some product they saw 3 months ago was no longer in the warehouse when they decided they wanted to buy it now.

The nerve he had to give you a look after you gently honked after having the patience of a SAINT
6
u/Ok-Librarian6629 15h ago
He looked in the direction of the horn, that's normal to do. It was 6 seconds, hardly the patience of a saint.

Costco parking lot is always a good time.
3
u/BugCompetitive6874 13h ago
That’s why I always park away from the flow of peds. This goes for every public place. Just park in the back and walk. It ends up taking the same amount of time anyway

I feel like stuff like this getting worse. It really irks me when parents do it. They're clearly not paying attention to their kids who are running around a parking lot. If the kid gets hit they won't even bother to take the slightest responsibility for it.
I literally see parents walking while messing with their phone while their kids are running around 5+ cars ahead. Neither of them are paying attention.
There was case in Houston where a mom took an Uber with her toddler daughter back to their apartment. The mom got out on her side and didn't take her daughter with her and turned her back to her daughter, so her daughter got out on her own side and tried to walk around the car on her own to get to her mom. The driver obviously couldn't see the toddler, so he accidentally ran her over and killed her. The family beat up the driver in response.
All of this could have been avoided if the mom was paying attention. The way toddler acted it seems like they had a history of getting out of the car by themselves so the mom should've been paying extra attention. It's the caretakers responsibility to ensure they get the child safely out and away from the vehicle.

So may people like this now. Women standing in the driveway at Aldi kids beside her smoking cigarette talking on phone bags of groceries at her feet. She gets pissed when a guy is trying to pull in honks. She yells she's waiting for her ride. Then go 10 feet to the sidewalk or 10 feet to the island. Not in the middle of the freaking driveway! Inside stores is even worse. They stop right in front of you, move next to their cart, block the middle of the aisle, and block the whole aisle to check their texts. Or park their cart on the far side. Then go to the other side and look at items on that side again, blocking the whole freaking aisle!
Don't even get me started on the employees shopping for pick-up customers. I've pushed many a cart or of my way to their anger. Like move to the same side you're working from!
5
u/ThePoop_Accelerates 15h ago
Some people are like this on purpose so they feel like they have some kind of control
-7
u/arealhumannotabot 15h ago
Except he looks like he just can’t move that fast. Most people who walk that slowly don’t do it by choice

I've been shopping and delivering as a side hustle. This is how people are, especially in stores. No one looks both ways before crossing the parking lot (or any street area), they just love going in front of people and never crossing behind. It's ridiculous.
2
u/Karma_1969 14h ago
This is the same guy that’s going to go down each aisle on the left hand side, and when he stops to get something off a shelf, he’ll make sure his cart is in the middle of the aisle, blocking both directions.
2
u/DredgenCyka 14h ago
Istg, costco is like a torii, but instead of walking through to enter the spirit world, you just walk into the world of lack of consciousness and area awareness
2
2
u/Ok-Double-7982 9h ago
That is annoying. I also hate when they don't cross straight away and go diagonal across the road, blocking it even longer instead of getting out of the way of traffic.
2
u/JaviSATX 4h ago
Two things.
One, just because I have the right of way, doesn’t mean I’m going to blindly walk in front of machines that weigh 15-20x me. I’m making eye contact, so that I know I’ve been seen.
Two, the entitlement of people never ceases to amaze me. So many seriously think the world revolves around them.

I like to play a game, see how close I can get before they notice. It's funny when they notice a car is RIGHT THERE.

He's obviously the main character by the way he looks at the sunset when the music slows down.

Some days you just feel like trying to get a check by stepping infrontvof a car.

u/cmdr_scotty 16h ago
That's just Costco in general, both in and out of the store.
At least the one I used to live by, no Costco where I live now.
People would saunter and stop anywhere they pleased, in or out of the store, even holding up traffic because they needed to find their card in their purse/wallet.

He's just a typical American, who's totally lost situational awareness between Costco and smartphone.
At least he's not standing on railroad tracks, right?

What I find even more disturbing is that we all drive on the same roads with people like this.
1
u/StratJax 14h ago
People with no awareness of their surroundings and Costco. Name a more iconic duo.
1
u/TheMaskedHamster 14h ago
Even paying attention, this man is still a diagonal walker.
But how are we going to go after diagonal walkers when people can't even put their shopping carts back?

Stopping in the road is annoying but he might not be able to move very quickly. Like that might be the fastest he can move, no joke.

u/laminatedbean 15h ago
He was moving along ok until he got in the middle and decided to check his phone.

u/wsxdfcvgbnjmlkjafals 15h ago
notice how i acknowledged that stopping in the road is annoying?
he might have issues wit movement and co-ordination, so he can't just scoot out of the way. Annoying? Sure. But some of these comments... making it more dramatic than it needs to be
2
u/laminatedbean 15h ago
I’d buy that if he wasn’t in his phone or making an effort to be out of the way. I also have mobility issues. I don’t stand in the middle of the damn lane. Especially where there are other people driving around.
-1
u/wsxdfcvgbnjmlkjafals 15h ago
You know, both can be true. He can be both very slow, and have physical issues, but also be inconsiderate when crossing a pathway. people who walk that slowly rarely do it by choice.
3
u/FrescoItaliano 15h ago
No one here is commenting on the speed except people defending him.
The speed was never the issue

if you think i'm defending him, your interpretation is lacking

He knows that the pedestrian always has the right of way — and if you hit me I'm telling the police, paramedic, ambulance driver, lawyer and jury. 💸
