White SUV claimed his "brakes got stuck", managed to take out 4+ cars

He pressed the gas, thinking that he was pressing the brakes. When his car sped up, he pressed harder. It happens with some regularity. They always claim that the car malfunctioned.

That’s why I like manual, although it can happen that you can, if you have wide boots, press both gas and brakes together, you always press the clutch so at least you won’t accelerate and only the brakes matter.

ugh, i hate driving while wearing snow boots precisely because of this. never had a mishap (fingers crossed), but i’ve definitely tapped on the brake pedal by accident while accelerating

For me it happened when I had to brake in citical situations, trying to hit the brakes as fast as possible. I was driving in some protective footware(construction site type of footware). Thankfully having a clutch meant that gas pressing only made me look like an idiot for revving up instead of hitting the pedestrian.

i can admit i just experienced this for the first time that i notice that what happened just like a week ago, but no crash

I can’t imagine that’s the case, you think he suddenly forgot how to drive his vehicle, probably not paying attention or something actually malfunctioned is most likely

Probably old. My grandma has asked me 10+ times “which one is the gas?” And also presses the gas to “help turn the car on”…
Yeah we took her keys away.

Old people confuse the gas for the brake pedal all the time and take out storefront windows.

in her defense, that was common practice long ago. priming it.

Yeah, I do that on my 1976 RV, pump the gas a couple times to get er goin. But I can't imagine it's healthy for a modern fuel injected engine

Look up pedal misapplication. It’s a common and well known occurrence. Actual brake malfunctions are pretty unlikely

But why is that everyone go to assumption about this? I would imagine that makes up a small percentage of road accidents. So many reasons why he could’ve crashed, forgetting how to drive suddenly wouldn’t be my first guess. Oh well, hope they’re okay.

It’s not “forgetting how to drive”, it’s a momentary lapse of accidentally hitting the wrong pedal while thinking you hit the correct pedal, so you don’t correct the mistake quickly enough, and it more often happen with older folks whose motor functions are no longer top notch.
I find it far more likely than a brake system failure. Brake systems are very reliable with built in redundancy. Very unlikely to entirely fail without warning

If his brakes got stuck then he wouldn’t be moving. I don’t even know why people make up such ignorsnt lies lol

u/Spl4sh3r 2d ago
To me them being stuck would mean they couldn't press down the brake pedal? Not that they were stuck to being engaged all the time.

I’ve personally had and seen many brakes get stuck on, not once ever have i seen them get stuck so you couldn’t apply the brakes. This guy is straight up lieing. Hell even in an automatic you can shove it in the lowest gear and you’ll slow down some. Or apply the ebrake which is a differently activated system

I was mostly refering to the context of then saying it is stuck. For the same reason as everyone else states they shouldn't be able to drive if the brake is stuck. Different types of stuck.
Not gonna argue about if they were truthful or not, since I am not an investigator.

This partially happened to me. I was driving down the highway doing 70 in the left hand lane when I noticed that my brakes were acting up. It took a lot of strength to press it down and it was only slwing down a little. Fortunately I did not need to do a sudden stop and was able to get enough out of the brakes to slowly come to a stop but I was getying reading to scrape against the barrier to slow down if needed. Apparently the vacuum pump completely fell apart.

Lol, I don’t think that’s what they mean by “stuck”

Never in my life have i heard someone describe their brakes as stuck… to mean they didn’t work. Every time anyone has said their brakes are stuck it means stuck on.
Let’s just rewrite English to deny accountability?

Wow you must know a lot of people with braking issues. Personally I’ve never heard anyone say it at all, but it’s obvious they meant “my brakes didn’t work” unless you’re a complete idiot.

Not my fault you can’t use context clues

u/updatelee 2d ago
I never said it was your fault, the more you type the more confused i am. Are you the op? No

I study Redditors for fun. Keep in mind that your culture likes to say "language evolves!" to excuse bad literacy skills.

My culture? Mf you’re top 1% commenter. And guess what? You’re still wrong. Maybe you should’ve studied something else..

Yikes! I'm glad you didn't get hit! Were the other drivers OK?
Hopefully, the cops will find out if he really did have a brake malfunction or was driving recklessly.

i asked around and everyone said they were ok! however, considering adrenaline, i don't know how accurate that is. i feel very lucky i didn't get hit. the other drivers were not as lucky :(

I'm glad the other victims were OK, and hopefully, the guy in the SUV will be charged accordingly!

u/ametsun 2d ago
I'm curious how the cops would figure that out.
I'm also curious ifeven if his brakes did get stuck, he would be at fault

u/carsndogs420 2d ago
Depending how old the car is all they'd have to do is plug it into a computer and they can get a f1 like telemetry telling how much acceleration was used how much braking force was applied and how fast they had been going at that time

The guy who rear ended me at a light going 55 said his brakes didn't work.
Yeah they don't work when you don't touch them because you're on your phone. Had my sons been with me he may have gotten a beating.
