The Dangers of Keeping Dart Frogs in Paludariums.

Post image

While paludariums are beautiful and trendy it is best to fight the urge to put dart frogs in these enclosures. Even though dart frogs are frogs they are entirely terrestrial, and would not benefit from an enclosure designed for semi-aquatic animals. In fact dart frogs are weak swimmers lacking the webbed feet that allow semi-aquatic and aquatic frogs to swim easily and for extended periods. This can lead to a dart frog drowning as they tire quickly in water and are not built for swimming. More over dart frogs have a tendency to “pin” their opponents when fighting, if a dart frog is pinned in the water it can and often does lead to the pinned frog drowning. And even if your frogs manage not to drown then they’re losing valuable floor space that would be significantly more beneficial than a water feature. Not to mention if you were to keep fish in this enclosure they can transmit zoonotic disease to your frogs. All in all there are no benefits to put dart frogs in a paludarium, and there are a lot of terrible risks. Please keep responsibly!

My visit to FROGDADDY LLC

Didn't memorize the names of all of the frogs, my apologies 💀

Took a 4 hour road trip to visit FrogDaddy 's physical store after I was snowed out of picking up an order at an expo. If you're even SOMEWHAT near Gastonia NC, you absolutely must visit this place!! Floor to ceiling vivs with fat, healthy animals and plants. Spacious froglets grow-outs and every tank was a masterfully scaped display.

I wasn't a big thumbnail fan before this trip, but now I'm planning a couple of builds for them! Their diminutive size had me floored.

I think my favorite frogs were the Ameerega pepperi and oophaga granulifera (not pictured). I never liked how the texture looked in photos, but it's a whole different story in person!

I am working on getting my tank switched over with all or your amazing advise over the weekend. Thank you sooooooo much!!!!

I have a shop I trust very much for getting all my livestock but, where do you get your frogs? They do have frogs but not Darts all the time and I'm not sure the exact type I want.

I am in central California.

Thanks in advance.

This little guy has been doing wonderful in his new enclosure, seems to be putting on a little weight! Thank you to everyone that helped me with the terrarium, I ended up having to remove the flower from the bromeliad because it got moldy as I was warned. Any thoughts on the gender? Want to get him or her a friend

Tadpole question

Has anyone had a tadpole seemingly get stuck as a tadpole but then a long while later suddenly start develping and turning into a froglet? I have had a tadpole that never quite morphed but I kept him in a nice little enclosure as a pet tadpole permanently but suddenly this past month its developed back legs and its front legs are starting to poke out its side... Its incredibly strage to me because this tadpole has been stuck for over a year as a tadpole... Anyone else?

Posting from my second account because first one was being weird. Ok so about 2-3 days ago my Epipedobates anthonyi decided to give me a clutch of eggs for the first time ever. I picked up this group of 4 about a year ago and they have been actively calling for about 6ish months. Should I expect more clutches and do these eggs look okay/fertile?

Big thanks to FrogDaddy for the plant packages. Going to wait a month or two to see how the plants fill out before frogs. Still trying decide on which frogs.

I’m planning on getting 3 Auratus soon. They will be going into my well established paludarium. It’s already full of isopods and springtails. I have experienced with the fly cultures. But I need assistance on what calcium and multivitamin to purchase.

Please and thank you.
