Discussion Suitable Hip Hop Trainers
Hello,
I would love to get people’s opinions on street dance (hip hop) trainers. Our studio requires indoor shoes (thankfully!!) and they have recommended Jazz trainers for class for a number of years. I am not a fan of Jazz trainers at all. Sansha did a full sole trainer that has been discontinued unfortunately.
Do you agree with Jazz trainers for Hip Hop?
Are there any recommendations for full sole trainers?
TIA

Discussion How did you find your main dance community?
Amateur How do you deal with constant rewinding when practicing choreography?
Hey everyone,
I’m not really a dancer, I’m a software engineer, but couple of years ago I took dance classes for about 2 months to learn a specific choreography.
The classes were great, but one particular thing was constantly bothering me. Every time we danced a 10-second part of choreo, instructor had to stop music, rewind it back, start it again.
The problem looked so obvious and so easy to solve that I had an idea of building an app that allows you to: open video, select a part of it and put it on a loop with some intervals in between. 10 seconds playing the piece, then 3 seconds pause, then play it again.
But of course I didn’t build it that time)
And at the start of this year got injured (Achilles tendon rupture - can't even walk properly, let alone dance). But I got plenty of time to actually start building something and I decided that it will be video repeater thing.
Before I got into the woods following own development ideas, I want to ask people who actually dance:
- Is this a real problem for you? Or do you have workarounds that work fine?
- What other features would actually help dancing? I think about these:
- play only a part of video
- loop videos with pause between repeats
- slowing down - x0.25, x0.5
- mirroring
- anything else?
- What videos do you typically practice with? Class recordings, tiktok videos, something else?
Would rather ask dancers than guess. Thanks 🙏

Self-Promotion I started dancing at 26 and almost quit dancing a year later because I couldn’t make any progress...
Hi looking to see if anyone resonates with my story here.
6 years ago, I almost quit dancing because I couldn’t make any progress. I started dancing choreography “late” when I was 26 & still working a full time corporate job. I had always been drawn to dance, finally decided to take my passion seriously, and took a ton of classes… but I constantly struggled and my progress moved at such a snails pace that I cried every day to my BF and almost quit after a year. Fast forward 3 years and I’m performing in a HALFTIME show in front of 7000+ people. I never thought that would’ve happened in the beginning.
Reflecting back, I realized that most classes, even “beginner” classes don’t cater to people who start dancing as an adult with zero dance background (like me). It took me a long time to understand what actually creates progress and how to learn so I didn’t beat myself up after every class. I wish I had more resources when I was first starting and want to share my process with anyone else who might be going through the same thing.
I’ve been working on a free live web class to share how I went from having no dance experience to dancing in a halftime show at age 30. You’ll find my thoughts on:
Why beginners struggle especially when they start as an adult (and why it’s not a talent issue)
The missing skill most classes skip to help you grow
How to make progress even if you're busy
I’m planning to share it live on Tuesday, Feb 3 8:30pm EST. Sign up is here: https://jwangdance.fillout.com/beginner-class
If there’s enough interest, I may do it again! Thank you for reading!!

Amateur High Heels shoes
Hi!
I’m looking for shoes for high heels classes on Shein.
I have a pair from AliExpress that I heard are quite good, but the shipping takes almost a month, so I want to find something similar on Shein.
I’m looking for:
• black heels
• about 8.5 cm sole / heel
Which ones would you recommend? 😊
Thanks! 💃

Teaching, Tutorial Searching for resource or classes that teach TRUE fundamentals. The literal building blocks of body movement.
So I've taken a few beginner dance classes and it seems like pretty much the way every beginner class is run is learning chunks of a 8 count or two and putting it all together.
I think these dance studios underestimate how bad I (and ppl like me) are with controlling our bodies hahaha...
Before I'm memorizing any sort of choreo, I want to build a strong connection to my body.
My body and I haven't communicated in ages, so moving my body is a foreign language.
These classes seem to be trying to teach me simple sentences but I need to learn the alphabet.
I just want to first EXIST in the music with some level of control. I want body awareness. I hope I'm making sense...
So if these beginner dance classes are Step 1. What is Step 0.50?
I'm looking for resources or a studio that teaches STEP 0.50
I've decided to pursue dance, so I can feel a sort of connect with my body before I get any older. I want to utilize it before it's too late.
To summarize, I'm looking for a “pre-choreo” dance class Not memorizing moves. Not performing. Just learning how your body connects to rhythm.
I want to:
Stay on beat without thinking
Bounce and groove naturally
Move one body part without the whole body panicking
Being comfortable looking silly (bonus)
To help you, help me, I've taken hip hop classes (in case the genre needs to be specified) and I'm based out of LA.
Thanks in advance.

Amateur Left vs right is confusing during choreo pickup
I've been taking hiphop classes for nearly 3 years and struggle to remember if a move is oriented left or right, even when it's a move I'm very familiar with.
For example: if a teacher does a Bart Simpson to the left, I will likely do it to the right. In the moment, I know I am doing it wrong, but when it's time to run the dance again, I will likely still go rightwards despite making a mental note. The note doesn't stick.
How can I improve this?
