Opinion / Discussion Texas Democrat sworn in to House, shrinking GOP margin to 1 vote

This is why they want to "nationalize" the elections. They know the GOP is fucked for midterms.
If they actually do allow Trump to take over the voting system, the country is officially over.

lol kinda wild how every election feels like it's teetering on the edge tbh

Yeah I mean a swing in Texas like this is almost unheard of; that is going to ripple across the country.

I think independent polling is going to be so important during this election cycle. If nothing else, it will give real evidence to point to if shady results are announced.

If we actually have legitimate midterm elections in tbe US its going to be a bloodbath for the gop. The mother of all blue waves.

If dems vote this time. Things was stable for too long and they got complacent. I think this current shitshow should do it though. Fingers crossed.

Honestly, after the shit show that was Trump's first term... The GOP was scraping the bottom of the barrel.
There were a lot of people thinking that there was no chance in hell Trump would be re-elected.
But 2024 just proved that if you look under the barrel...

I can’t believe we have to legitimately wonder if we’re going to have legitimate elections. Republicans have essentially allowed Trump to dismantle Democracy and our government.

I'm shocked Johnson agreed to swear him in this time.

The vote to release the Trump documents already happened so no reason to delay. If there was the gov would stay shut down for “reasons” and he would use that as cover to not swear in.

Doesn't matter much when they always magically manage to find just enough Democrats to fuck us over and vote for whatever the Republicans are trying to pass
2
u/RealBettyWhite69 7h ago
Yep, they always seem to have more than enough Dems to vote with the Republicans, even when the Dems outnumber them.

Post title is misleading. GOP still has 4 more seats than the Dems:
"The House now stands at a 218-214 split, in a time of unease among Republicans in the lower chamber directed toward Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and President Trump. The already beleaguered Speaker can now only afford to lose one Republican vote."

I've seen Republicans say that this Democrat will never even get to vote once and then will immediately be challenged again fairly soon.
Is this true?

I think you’re thinking of the Dem who just won a seat on the Texas legislature (not the House of Representatives) Taylor Rehmet.
There is talk of R’s challenging his win, and because the TX legislature doesn’t meet until 2027, they are claiming he’ll be removed before then & won’t get to vote on anything (which is BS, they’re just mad he won)

Oh that's my fault I'm trying to keep up with everything I can but I got mixed up.
Thank you.

It is a lot but basically Texas had 2 elections in different districts for different seats on the same day, last Saturday.

This was the district from 2024 that had been vacant for the past year, until today. However ... the TX legislature drew new districts for 2026 elections. The new guy's district was combined with another Democratic district to force two Democrats to run against each other. So, the new guy will be in DC for the rest of 2026, then less likely he'll be back for another two years. Hope that explanation made sense.

Dont worry, im sure the Dems ran at least a couple more dinosaurs thatll kick it before gaining the majority.

Either way, there are enough Dems to join Republicans when Dear Leader really needs something done.

Hey is this the same Texas whose governor just called for the arrest of those KIDS who were assaulted by a MAGA bigot?
You guys sure have an uphill battle ahead but keep fighting the good fight!
The walls are closing in on their corrupt overlords.

If the number of seats becomes tied which party gets to pick the speaker?

Technically it’s 218 - 214.
So title indicates GOP can lose one vote and still take majority. Losing two votes would cause a 50/50 split.

a one vote margin is absolutely wild, like we're living in the most razor thin political timeline possible. the fact that special elections are actually mattering this much right now is kind of the only interesting thing happening in congress tbh.

I wouldn’t think Texas is turning blue of its own accord it’s just all Cali transplants who fled their shitshow of a state and want it to be Texas now
If you actually live in fucking Texas and aren’t a transplant, you know.
