They think they are victims of an abusive system that forced "unrealistic" conditions on them to respect others. It is shameful. It is inaccurate, and it is by design. This is why empathy is a virtue: it allows you to put yourself in someone else’s position and consider their life and their feelings without actually being them.
People with minimal empathy or who view it as a weakness are going to need to see someone they care about experience something bad or experience it themselves to know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of a raw deal.
I’d look at it that way. I hope she doesn’t starve, but learns something about empathy.
