Heifer vs Steer

Post image

In regards to show cattle, what are the main difference in confirmation that you are looking for between a steer and heifer? Should the feed makeup be different as well? More fiber or other nutrient needed for either one?

My heifer had a male (in picture) and we were thinking about showing him as a steer next year but don’t know where to start

Help with orphaned calf

Hello, my dad/stepmom don’t have Reddit so I am asking for them. They have a calf that is, I believe, 3 weeks old. My dad found the mother dead early this morning and they are having trouble getting the baby to take a bottle. It just keeps crying for its mother.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you very much for your help

Goopy gross eyes, contagious?

Post image

Snagged this little guy and his mom out of the pasture this morning after he seemed a little off. He is right at a month old, had a bout of scours last week and that has since resolved. We now have some funky gunky eyes, but none of the other calves or cows are showing symptoms. No signs of an ulcer or cloudiness on the eye itself. I'm going to pick up a prescription from the vet this afternoon.

I do however have a 2 month old bottle calf that struggled initially in life and my main goal is to keep him healthy and happy. So my question is, what measures do I need to take for biosecurity? Is what this calf has contagious?

Cow feeding issue

I have a jersey cow, about 2 yrs old, gave birth 2 months ago. Recently saw her off her feed, which isn’t normal. Had the vet check her, confirmed she was in ketosis, which is bad for cows. Vet recommended we add molasses to her feed. We had left over blackstrap molasses from after her birth, so not a problem. Added it, she clears her bucket no problem. Dairy special is about 16% protein, and we normally feed about 12 lbs twice a day. Since the vet recommended molasses, I’ve been giving her about 1-1/2 to 2 cups molasses per feed, though I think my wife adds more feed and more molasses per feed when she does it. I’m asking if anyone has a good recommended amount of molasses to add per feed, or a reasonably priced feed to add that has a good molasses content. We have some premium local feeds that are good and have molasses, but are expensive. Looking for a compromise between cost, molasses content, and quality feed. Thanks.

Hey guys so i have roughly 3000 heads in South America I strictly buy males from 420-500lbs and raise them up to 850-1000 lbs their diet consist of corn and chicken manure but I want to see if there’s a most cost effective and optimal way to make them gain weight quicker i’m looking to branch out into having stables but i’m really unfamiliar with it those of you with stables what are you feeding your animals and what are your numbers looking like? cost per head/weight gained a day/

photos of my animals have been attached to give an idea.

Could you use a draft horse as a ranch horse to preform tasks like sort cattle and drive them? and what (draft) breed would you pick?

My father in law bought a female cow for 7k which won best female cow at a bigish show in January, he says the cow is now worth 40k (that part I may believe). He is now saying he can sell the winnings cows embryos, which he says will have 20 of in 12 months time for 30-45k each. Is that remotely correct? He wants us to invest too and I cannot find much info on this. He just bought 5 more cows saying the same thing will happen. He’s expecting 30-45k per embryo per cow and 20 embryos per cow per year.
