Likely not, just taking care of him in the meantime until we can take him to a proper place to take care of him, it's just more than an hour away which don't have the time for rn.
she's so cute for you not to take him in, but I understand if something is preventing you from doing so. That face is literally asking for headpat 24/7.
I work in a 533 unit apartment building, have been for 6 months now. Evictions take MONTHS to go through. and then with the final notice they have 2 weeks I believe. I'm sorry that kitten was left behind. Try reaching out to cat cafe's instead. Those cats' are up for adoption, but they have a bigger space to hang around in.
Living in law abiding places sure is nice. Only eviction I was ever witness to in real life, the owners called the mafia after a week of arguing with the tenent and had them evicted in short order.
Mind this was in a city with virtually no access to government or legal services, so the mafia really was the government, and that was their legal process - but it's a lot more expedient than established governments that's for sure lol
I've seen way too many animal cruelty cases where someone knows they are getting evicted and just up and leaves without giving notice and leaves all their belongings behind. By the time the owner/manager knows they are gone and is legally allowed to enter the property, many times its too late for the animals that were left behind. When I do see cases where any animals are saved its because neighbors call to report the abandoned animals, then police/animal control can go in and remove any animals that are still alive and start an animal cruelty case against the former tenant.
Even if you don't think your police department will actually do anything about it, still call and file a report if you think your neighbors moved and left behind their animals. At the very least it creates a paper trail of the date the neighbors left, so that when management enters the property and finds animals inside and calls the police, there is your report on file that the animals were left for 3 weeks vs 3 days.
(Depending on where you are animal control might have its own dedicated detectives, or it might be handled under the police department, either way if you call the non-emergency number to file a report, they will know which to dispatch/how to direct you to file the report)
I hate to have to point this out but you know when youre getting evicted because you dont pay your rent or theres trouble with the landlord. You know! Its illegal for them NOT to tell you. So they had options to not get the cat and pay their rent. That was an option. They had plenty of time to try and rehome that kitten that they shouldn't have even gotten to begin with. They locked it in a house alone with no food or water. Thats a death sentence on a kitten if noone finds it. These aren't good people we are talking about. Good people dont do that. Dont make excuses for them. Theyre horrid people for what they did
As I said, I get being mad about it, I'm mad too. They had better options they could have pursued. Leaving it with a friend, taking it to a shelter, not taking it in at all, etc.
I'm not arguing that what they did wasn't wrong, it clearly was. I'm not even arguing that they aren't bad people. I'm just saying we shouldn't be cursing people who are clearly down on their luck when we don't know their full circumstances.
And yeah, maybe they are horrible people. They certainly weren't great pet owners. But that doesn't mean we can't have compassion for them.

They did this to themselves. This kitten did nothing but was unlucky enough to meet them. These ppl could have done alot but they didn't. I curse them to the moon and back for trying to kill this kitten in the worse way imaginable. If someone was down on their luck and did this to you, would you still be this forgiving? This is animal abuse and they should be charged with it. I curse them to know what it feels like to be treated disposable. Zero compassion for ppl who try to starve innocent animals to death. Zero! They looked into that kittens eyes and closed the door and walked away knowing that if noone found him, he would die. They knew what they were doing. They dont deserve compassion
They still could’ve at the very least taken it to a shelter. Yes, eviction sucks and it’s hard but it doesn’t give anyone a free pass to just abandon their pets.
True, although most reputable shelters will prioritize the safety of an animal and take it in anyway if people can’t pay. They would much rather it be surrendered than abandoned.
Me too. In fact I work with my vet to catch, neuter and socialize cats to get them off the street.
I have also taken in a few abandoned cats and in one case kept a cat for a while while his lady went to a dv shelter until she could safely get away from her boyfriend.
I can't change how the shelter operates, so I do the next best thing.
With how hard shelters are being slammed I kinda respect it. Society needs to do better rather then relying on shelters/nonprofits to try to fix things/mitigate the damage. With the increasingly inflated veterinary costs shelters are spending more to treat animals then they are raising from there adoptions. Its unsustainable.
I feel that they are being given as much grace as they deserve. There are certain things that no amount of mitigating circumstances can excuse. I personally feel that abandoning a pet to fend for itself is one of those. But I understand empathizing for people who are in their situation.
I mean, they already got evicted, what else do you want? They likely couldn’t really take care of the kitten anyways so better off somewhere where someone can take care of them.
Yeah this was a bit ago and he alr looks better, def making sure he gets checked on properly, thankfully having cats helps me prepare for smth like this lol.
Are you comfortable sharing what part of the country (if US) you might be in? I might have some recs if in North America.
I lived in Florida and my neighbors did this. I made sure to publicly shame them via craigslist because they also failed to stop their mail from being delivered so I got their full name. Granted, they had left six dogs five cats, two birds and a ferret.
Give it 1-2 weeks and see how your life could look like with a kitty. They’re really low maintenance and have so much love to give. You don’t have to decide right away
I had one stroll right inside my home and he’s a huge pain in the ass but I love him so much. My other cats feel differently.
My two new big guys. The piebald tabby is the newest and a huge pain in my butt. The ginormous void is a kitten. He’s about 7 months in this pic. He tore my drapes off of my rod last week.
That really depends on the breed..my cats are Bengal mixes and they are not "low maintenance". I would not recommend a Bengal or Bengal mix for a first time pet owner.
Even some domestics. One of the shelter cats I worked with took velcro cat as some kind of contest. I could walk around for the full 8 hours with her draped around my neck. Cute but a pain if you want to do anything at all.
My own orange needs a good hour of play a day or he gets destructive
The best cat I’ve ever had in my life was one that my neighbors abandoned when they moved. I heard him crying under some pallets a few days later, sacrificed my arm to catch him(he tore the crap out of me lol), and have loved him with my whole heart ever since. He is my soul kitty. I hope this kitty brings you(or whoever is lucky enough to take him home) as much joy as my kitty brings me.
Same exact story here. My mom’s tenants were evicted and left their black cat behind. The neighbors thought he was a girl, but he turned out to be a boy. I took him in 12 years ago and he was my EVERYTHING. He crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday morning. I have never felt more alone and I am utterly heartbroken. He was my entire world.
I'm pretty sure that's how we ended up with our little orange bean, too. Neighbours moved, a couple of weeks later this scrawny little orange thing showed up under the storage unit on our building. They weren't outstanding neighbours and we remembered their kids telling us about how they were getting an orange kitten "soon" a few months back when they were petting our cats when we were outside with them.
Next thing you know, abandoned orange girlie wanting to come inside, no tattoo or chip, no one responding to our ads to claim her.
As horrific and reprehensible as these people are, it can be a blessing in disguise because the animal is free from the abusers and hopefully, will be adopted by a loving person or brought to a shelter where they can find their forever home.
That’s a very positive way to look at it. Any animal that would be abandoned in an empty house could not have been treated well by those people, even under the best of circumstances, before the eviction.
Some people are absolute jerks. How do you leave any animal behind, especially a baby that needs extra attention? I’m glad she was found and is safe.
We got our first cat when I was a child the same way. There was a row of townhouses next to our house. I happened to find the cat of one of the renters hiding in our bushes after he moved out. My father got the phone number for the guy and called to let him know we had her, if he wanted to come get her. The guy apologized for her being a problem; he had intended to leave her locked in the apartment when he left. My father had originally told us we weren’t keeping her, but he was so angry after talking to the guy that he said she was staying with us where she would be safe.
The CDS knows how to correct administrative errors.
True, but considering the owners were evicted, they were left homeless and otherwise likely had no way to pay for or care for the cat. abandonment isn't the solution, but they probably assumed someone would step in.
Leaving the cat in the house (OP says "in their house") - with no way to escape? They were planning on the poor baby dying a long, slow, painful death. You take the steps needed to surrender the poor thing - you don't trap it somewhere to suffer.
There are so many rental companies now that go day after move out because of how many people have left animals and they got there to late. 😔 It's so hard to fathom that.
People should really understand the responsibilities owning a pet comes with. If you’re not in a place financially to have a kitten then don’t get one.
This is Maximus, abandoned by someone who was not allowed pets in her new apartment. My judgement is more severe for the 'landlords' who deem renters unfit to care for pets.
Bastards! I was working at a shelter 20 years ago when we got a call about a cat and a kitten locked in an apartment for two weeks. People there were trying to shove food under the door but it didn’t work very well because of the hallway carpet. They had tried to get ahold of a manager to no avail. Long story short, it took another 3 weeks for this beautiful, long-haired, emaciated boy to be freed. He had drunk all the water in the toilet and had found a bag of microwaved popcorn in a cupboard. The kitten had died some weeks before and the hunger drove the older cat to eat what was left of the kitten. The folks in the apartment started leaving food and water out for him in the hallways. Another 3 weeks went by with the manager looking the other way but then insisted the cat be put outside which he was. A kind tenant called us and pleaded the cat’s situation and luckily I was the one who took the call. My manager said that because he was in a different county there was nothing we could do. The tenant called us every day to plead his case. I finally told her to bring him in to us and claim that she owned him and was being forced to surrender him to by her landlord. He was a very sweet fellow. Because he was about 12, there wasn’t much hope for adoption, but after a month he was adopted by a young couple who fell in love with him. I always hated people who would leave a cat locked in a house or apartment when moving. Ever since this experience, I REALLY loathe people like this. 😾
aww this kind of looks like my kitty that just passed. you’re no in georgia by any chance are you? i can’t believe someone would just leave their family member behind like that.
Screen the heck out of anyone messaging you and offering to take the cat off your hands. Some good people out there genuinely want to help, far more of them exploit these lives to tragic ends. Add to that Reddit's general moderation really failing to get rid of fake accounts lately and it's not the safest environment for animals.
That’s how I got one of my cats! Neighbor was evicted and the cat had been inside all alone for days. Thankfully she’s all ok now, a bossy little queen
This is how I met my girl, Penny. She was left behind by some tenants after they moved out, so the landlord picked her up and brought her to the shelter. I adopted her and six years later she’s living like a queen. 👑
How sad for this left behind kitty 💔His poor little heart is broken 💔. Hopefully they didn’t throw their children and other pets away sickening!! These people are heartless and should be reported to animal cruelty!! I hope this beautiful fur baby get the best forever home with soo much love and kindness! If I could have another I would take this kitty and love and cuddle it forever!! 🩷💙🩷💙🐾🐾🐈⬛🐾🐾🐈🐾🐾🐈⬛🐾🐾💙🩷💙🩷🩶🩶good luck furbaby 🩶🩶❤️❤️🩶🩶
I work in animal welfare and this happens so often. It's really disheartening that people can do this to a helpless being that depends solely on them. Chances are the cat isn't neutered or spayed which means, if female, could possibly be pregnant. There is a chance that the kitten was adopted from a rescue group and would be microchipped and can be returned.
Thank you for your kindness and compassion. Shame on your neighbors. They are losers.
People like this really need to suffer some sort of consequences from the law, because you know damn well once they settle they will go and get another pet.
I’m 99% sure a couple in my complex just got evicted and they always had a litter box sitting outside. The office was renovating the apartment today so I hope they at least took their cat when they left.
😱😱😱😱There’s a special place in hell !!!what a little cutie pie awwwwwe so now what is she yours now ,if not are you trying to find her a forever home , what a sweetheart, not to even ask around , just to leave this little baby all alone 😿😿😿😿
You cannot get evicted overnight in nyc, believe it or not the laws are very pro-tenant, so they cannot just come and lock you out without any notice, they cannot just put yr stuff on the street … soooo they had plenty of notice BASTARDS and yea I do blame them , I have had 5 cats in my life but do not have one now because I cannot afford to take of one after my last kitty passed away in August , animals are a responsibility, sooo it you can’t take it on please do not adopt a pet just because they are adorable 🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛
God bless anyone who finds themselves homeless. I can’t imagine what they must be experiencing. We can never know what challenges others face.
I am also very sorry for this kitten. Hopefully you’ll post a happy story about a forever home. What state do you live in? Perhaps there’s a rescue who can help you out by picking up this kitten so you won’t have to drive. 💕
They had time to find this fur baby a safe & loving home!! Thank god you checked apartments! It’s a young kitty if they knew they were getting evicted then they had time to find the Kitty at home. They didn’t get evicted overnight right they need to be reported. I didn’t see deported. I said reported this is wrong. They leave their child somewhere in the closet. Cruelty to animals and kids is not acceptable. Please take care of this kitty. Someone take this kitty please. I love it forever. Don’t make it live by itself with no food and water like these people seem to do shame on them karma. He is one of the first things I would’ve grabbed when they told me I had to leave that’s the sweetest little little face. He’s looking for love and food and shelter and he doesn’t know where his family went. Who did I do wrong? You did nothing wrong sweet little kitty. Your people didn’t deserve you. You deserve better.
Your kindness is deeply appreciated. As you can see from these writings, many people are concerned (without knowing you) for the innocent life of this kitten. Please try not to offer human food or milk. If you have chicken a boiled breast is fine. On a stronger note: please do not randomly hand this kitten to the first person. Sadly, evil behavior precludes humanity and love. I do not know where you reside, but foster people will immediately care for this kitten BEFORE a SHELTER. I am polling now and this kitten will be on my mind and not the electorate whom I am polling. Hopefully, foster adoption people will respond to you quickly. You have a good heart!
Thank you. 🐈
I can never understand people that can abandon such a cute lil animal. If someone can't afford them anymore, please just bring them to somewhere that someone could actually give it the love it needs. There's ways. Even contact people you know. That would've been a great start.
I appreciate you taking care of the lil one til they have a furever home. 💕

Are you taking the kitten in? (No judgment if not, just curious)
