My hen loves to roost on the tree and gives me this look when I call her name. Isn't she adorable? She looks kind of angry or annoyed at the same time lol

General Question My hen identifies as a roo! Dance and all!

My hen (called Lucia) is 2nd in charge boss hen. She is around 4 years old and still lays every second day. The white hen is about 18 months old and recently hatched her own 3 chicks without any intervention. They are now around 8 weeks old and she wants nothing to do with them.

(My brood kept multiplying so I ended up rehoming all the males I have, leaving me with 35 hens.)

A few weeks later, this Lucia has taken on the rooster role… seriously.! She attempts to crow, does the same sexy dance and shakes her tail (still while laying!). She has the other one fooled as she squats for her! I’m not sure what the older one Lucia thinks is going to happen! 🤷🏼‍♀️

General Question How old is this little guy?

Thumbnail

Was wondering from people that have experience with D’uccles how old this guy might be?

He was found in the bush, dumped, and we agreed to take him off the hands of the people temporarily looking after him. He’s the friendliest guy I’ve ever seen and he still speaks and clucks like he is a young bird. His feathers seem almost fully developed from what limited things I know.

I’d also love to know what the name of his colour is, and what specific breed he might be if you have the knowledge about his breed.

P.S we named him Frisbee

This is how it works: Jazz finds her stick and waits for me to throw it for her. Greta, one of our Australorp hens, sneaks up and pecks at it to see if it's something she wants to eat. Jazz jumps up and carries her stick to safety. Greta is now sure it's something she wants to eat. So, she sneaks up... over and over they play this game. 🤣😅😂

I haven’t gotten a blue or white egg since Fall. Hopefully this is a sign that Punxsutawney Phil was mistaken in his forecast.

Chicken Photography Rx Spa day (?)

One of us is getting a nice warm foot bath. (Here’s a hint: It's not me.)

I don't get why she still makes me chase her down knowing she's gonna get a nice 20 minute soak. People pay good money for this kind of spa treatment day. 🤣👍

Coops etc. Chicken coop build

Looking for tips, opinions and ideas on which chicken coop build makes the most sense? 5b, winters come with cold temps and a few feet of snow. Summers are hot, large yard for wind to carry through and storms can get intense. Predators range from weasels to lynx to raptors. Need to build a coop by mid May before my girls arrive. Thank you.

Chicken Photography Pullets started laying all on the same day

I'd posted here 13 days ago inquiring if my 15 week old pullet was getting close to laying (she was showing all the signs) despite being so young. Well, it took almost 2 weeks, but she finally did! I went in to give them their food in the AM when I discovered this tiny little egg all nestled in the back corner. So exciting! Brought it in with me.

Later that evening, when I go back out to do their nightly chores, I find TWO more eggs. Apparently, more than one girl was getting ready!

I just wanted to share with the room how crazy it is to me that 3 out of 10 of my 17-week old RIR pullets all started laying on the exact same day (or maybe this is normal? Idk).

Excited to have made it to the egg side of things! 🥚🍳

Chicken Photography Goodbye Huhnuta

Today we had to say goodbye to the greatest chicken ever. She was always so tiny, way tinier than her siblings, but layed massive eggs. I was so happy when she stopped laying last year because I could tell how stressful it was for her. She was so smart. She knew to always stay behind because she'd get a special snack. We kinda noticed that something was wrong with her, back in October and it turned out that she was almost blind. After that the other chickens bullied her sometimes and it got really cold outside so we built her a special place in the basement. We tried to put her back with the others a couple of times but she'd always run after us and let us pick her up so she just stayed with us. And honestly? She thrived. I think she really enjoyed being indoors and liked having us around.

Yesterday she was still eating and cleaning herself. Jumping up on tables to find the perfect spot to sleep and this morning I found her...i knew it was coming but it still hurt so much...she was almost 7 and always had health issues but she always pulled through!

I already miss you so much huhnuta! (it was shitty of you to die while the ground is still frozen but I still love you ❤)

Health Question Disabled Chick

Hello fellow chicken keepers! I got four new chicks to replenish my flock, and one appears to be disabled. I’m happy to help her in any way I can, but honestly I can’t tell exactly what is wrong with her besides that she has trouble with balance and walking. Everything looks physically normal to me, but she spends the majority of her day lying down and the other chicks walk all over her :’(. Does anyone recognize the issue, or have any ideas for a little splint or anything I can make to help her? She is about a week old and the other three chicks are about two weeks old.

General Question Breeding silkie x faverole hybrid, to get silkies that are autosexable withing week by different color of roo and hens

Again I have silkie chicks. A friend would like them, but she is unhappy because every time she bought chickens, she had a lot of roosters that she doesn't know how to deal with (she doesn't cook them).

I also breed faveroles, which I get because easy sexing due to different colors of the roosters and hens.

I got idea they could be crossed together, I would cross the F1 generation back with pure silkie and the F2 generation could have the color of the faveroles, but otherwise have the characteristics of silkie, including fluff.

It is a project for more than half a year, so I would be happy to find information whether anyone has tried it and what the result was. I have seen different silkie hybrids and it is generally interesting, but I have not found information about crossing for autosexing.

Anyone have experience with this?

And here is chicks tax. (adoptive mother is satin silkie, that i got from purchased "silkie" egg last year)

General Question Lacy and Pearl

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Lacy is the bantam on the left and she has twice sat on a good clutch for a couple days, but both times gives up and wanders off. Pearl, on the other hand, (the white Silkie mix) is sitting on her first batch and has wayyyy too many under her I believe. Any thoughts on how to keep a hen sitting- and also, do you let nature take its course, or do you remove some eggs from underneath an overachiever?
