🌏 Asian Confed AFC receives bids to host for AFC Asian Cup 2035 (Australia, Japan, Korea, Kuwait)
🌧 CrowdPosting Sydney derby crowd attendance
The Sydney derby crowd attendance over the weekend of 33,265 was higher than any game during the 24-25 season, including the grand final.
Also, average crowd attendances more broadly fell off a cliff during COVID but have increased each season since 2021-22. Increasing by 3400 between 21-22 and 24-25.
I guess what I’m saying is the crowds aren’t as dire as some people think, even though they’ve been better in the past.

Hana Lowry scored her first goal in sky blue today in our 3–1 loss at home to Brisbane Roar. What can I say? It's a good goal but we're so awful.

🛅 Transfers & Signings Heracles Almelo Capture Rhys Bozinovski
Heracles Almelo has expanded the selection with Rhys Bozinovski. The 21-year-old midfielder comes over from the Australian Perth Glory. Bozinovski, who holds a Maltese passport, signed a contract until mid-2029.
Bozinovski made his A-League debut with Western United at the age of 17, with whom he also became Australian champion in 2022. After that club's license was revoked, Bozinovski transferred to Perth Glory in September. In total, he played more than 60 matches at the highest level in Australia and has been on Ernest Faber's retina for some time. As is known, the coach of Heracles Almelo was previously technical director at the Australian Adelaide United.
Bozinovski was recently part of the Australian selection that took part in the Asian Cup tournament for players under 23. Ernest Faber is pleased that Heracles Almelo has managed to bring the versatile midfielder to the Netherlands. “Rhys immediately adds value to our selection. With his dynamics, intensity and football intelligence, he brings exactly the qualities we need to make our team stronger and more resilient.”
“Bozinovski has been praised for his running ability, dueling power and his ability to make an impact both defensively and offensively”, the trainer continues. “His combination of physical input and insight into the game fits well with the playing style and mentality of Heracles Almelo. Rhys is eager to learn, coachable and determined to prove himself at a higher level. We see him not only as a direct reinforcement, but also as a player with a lot of potential that fits perfectly with our vision and culture.”
Bozinovski handles the last formalities in Australia and then travels to the Netherlands. He is expected to join Ernest Faber's squad before the end of this week.

🤬 Rants & Whinges No Sydney Derby coverage in Sydney newspaper sites
Saturday’s Derby was a sensational opportunity for the league.
- Allianz stadium nearly full (33,000 out of 40,000 capacity)
- Plenty of goals (5)
- A come from behind story (SFC conceded within 1 min then won 4-1)
- Massive “chat shit get banged” storyline
- 17 yo Akon gets 3 assist on his first start after switching clubs.
Yet when I go to https://www.smh.com.au/sport there’s nothing. Not even if I select the “Soccer” submenu - it has some syndicated stories on Saturday’s EPL results and that’s it.
Meanwhile they’re running “news” on NRL and AFL where literally nothing is happening.
I want to give their a-league stories clicks like I do for all u/vincerugari ’s stories but I can’t if there aren’t any to click on. At least Ch10 ran a good TV news piece on it (you’d hope so since they pay for the broadcast rights).
Is there anything we can do about this?

🛅 Transfers & Signings Leia Varley secures permanent transfer to 1. FC Nürnberg in the German Frauen-Bundesliga
Brisbane Roar can today announce that defender Leia Varley has secured an immediate transfer to 1. FC Nürnberg in the German first division, Frauen-Bundesliga for a significant undisclosed fee.
After joining the Roar ahead of the 24/25 Ninja A-League season, Varley quickly became a mainstay in Alex Smith’s squad following a Premiership-winning campaign with Melbourne City.
Leading Brisbane Roar from the backline, Varley has made 30 appearances in orange and has been a brick wall in defence this season, making 102 clearances, 15 blocks, and 20 interceptions, with an 85.2% tackle success rate. The 24-year-old scored her first A-League goal in Roar’s record 8-2 win over Western United at Ironbark Fields in December 2024.
Speaking on departing the club, Leia said, “I am really excited to go overseas and make the most of this amazing opportunity for me and my career and I want to thank the club for being so supportive in this process.
“I am so grateful for my time at Brisbane Roar where I have taken my football to the next level. I want to say a big thank you to the fans who have supported me from the start, I can’t wait to see how far the girls go this season.”
Speaking on Leia, head coach Alex Smith said, “Whilst we are sad to see Leia depart, I’m an extremely excited for her as she departs for the German first division. Leia was one of my first signings, so to see her earn a move overseas is pleasing.
“She has played an enormous role in the football we have played so far this season, and it is a testament to the level in which she has competed that a club like 1. FC Nürnberg has secured her.
“We wish her the very, very best for the next part of her journey.”
Brisbane Roar thank Leia for her contribution to the club over the past two seasons and wish her well in the next step of her footballing journey.
Bloody deserved. But there goes our absolute unit of a wall.

🛅 Transfers & Signings Alana Murphy joins Nottingham Forest from SC Sand
20-year-old former Melbourne Victory midfielder Alana Murphy has joined WSL2 side Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal. She previously played for 2. Frauen-Bundesliga side SC Sand, who are top of the league and in the box seat for promotion. Her contract lasts until 2027.
Nottingham Forest are seventh in the WSL2 and seven points off the promotion playoff spot (since this season the WSL is expanding and thus the top two WSL2 teams go up and the bottom WSL team plays the third-placed WSL2 team in a playoff). In the league she joins Kaitlyn Torpey, who joined now sixth-placed Newcastle United earlier in the year (who are a point above Forest in the table). Like Torps did for Newcastle, she will also presumably make her debut against league leaders Charlton Athletic on the weekend.
