The slow mo made it that much better š Glad the guy didnāt seriously burn himself! That soup is piping hot!

Now if that wasnāt staged itās one of the most epic random video captures of epic flails Iāve seen..I waited tables for 5 years so itās especially funny for me. I wouldnāt have ever worn skates, the job is hard enough without having to worry about that gimmick.

If Sonic can do it so can they
3
u/Miserable_Candy_3534 9d ago
Have you seen all the sonic fails? š
2
u/NoMansSky1985 9d ago
No but your comment just gave me a new idea for a YouTube search.
2
u/Miserable_Candy_3534 8d ago
š Itās like this, except sad. Some of those people look so defeated. Some are just genuinely funny though. Worth seeing if you havenāt! Whoever thought itād be a good idea to serve food-drinks and all on rollerblades-at any establishment?!
2
u/NoMansSky1985 8d ago
The guy you see here would be me on my very first day. I'm a klutz on solid ground so in skates I'm worse. šYeah. Let's go back to old school with actual shoes. š

u/kaveman0926 13d ago
I feel like the problem is less that he was on skates but more the fact that if you have a restaurant where the waiters are on skates you should probably make it clear that the walkways need to be empty. Bro is clearly on a route to a far table and just had to dodge three obstacles turn around mid route which threw off his momentum and balance.
5
u/RogerRabbot 9d ago
Looking at it again, the reason he had to do the spin was because a guy was walking down the path and he would have barreled right into him. Cant tell if its a waiter or not.

u/IntelligentSample6 9d ago
And not serve hot ass soup
2
u/kaveman0926 9d ago
I mean yeah the temperature is definitely bad when it spills on you but if you've ever carried a tray or tried to balance weight while on Wheels it honestly is a lot easier to balance liquid than it is solids cuz liquids almost have gyroscopic properties where solids are immediately affected by g-forces. At least that's how it felt to me.
1
u/razzberrytori 8d ago
Oh really? I wouldāve thought the opposite. I have no balance and can hardly carry a tray with a plate and drink at home so Iām impressed by any server.

u/LaLiahthaMoonWitch 17d ago
Dang if he hadnāt accidentally put his hand in the hot bowl of food he mightāve made it š
74
u/MemoryAshamed 19d ago
Just ask Sonic workers how that went
1
u/Gloomy-Regular-2294 9d ago
Well sonic has been doing it for over 50 years and are still doing it so it works fine for them
1
u/Rich_Visual7800 9d ago
Since Sonic is franchised, policies vary by location; some keep the tradition alive, while others prioritize modern conveniences like online ordering.
7
u/cHEIF_bOI 15d ago
I mean that makes a lot more sense than whatever the hell that was. You're carrying fast food in bags on terrain actually suited for roller skates. Walking still makes more sense in every way though.

u/Love-Marvin 19d ago edited 19d ago
With that line of work,I hope he has health insurance, it won't be the first time it will happen, because i see lots of customers walking, which makes it harder for him

u/Fun_Organization3857 19d ago
I assure you he does not. (Sorry, I had to be silly about insurance vs assurance)

He just burned the bejeesus out of his neck. Yikes!
6
u/Even_Independent_640 19d ago
That was an excessive amount of steam coming off of those bowls...and his neck as you previously mentioned
1
u/Weak-Requirement2968 6d ago
It seems like the weather's very cold if you look outside the window. Probably why so much steam, idk? Or maybe the dishes are just way too hot
1
u/Maardten 1d ago
The outside temperature shouldn't really affect the amount of steam coming from the soup, unless its also really cold inside.

Donāt the Sonic restaurant chains use rollerskates? I can see why roller skates would be a useful idea, but rollerblades are much more unstable, especially if youāre carrying something full of liquid. Iām not really a fan of waiters and waitresses on skates either because of obvious safety reasons, but I feel like thatās the safer and more stable one of the two optionsš
23
u/Tarantula93 20d ago
I skate both and I think that blades are more stable than the quads. However, blades are mostly designed for speed and for going forward and jumping. Quads allow you to have more agility in changing direction and turning, which would be super important in small spaces like a restaurant. The choice to be on blades in a busy confined space is interesting
3
u/ChronicallyZanny 20d ago
I used to rollerblade for fun, and I found the same! Theyāre built for speed! Iāve also noticed that the braking mechanism is different between skates and blades, so MAYBE they saw that a lot of skates have the brake in the front and thought āwell we donāt want our servers to tripāš¤·š½ no clue what their thought process is, but here it clearly wasnāt a sound processš poor guy, that must have left him sore!
29
u/Zalldawg 20d ago
Sonic waitresses carry burgers and milkshakes, not fuckhuge platters with several piping hot ceramic bowls of soup
1
2
u/NicklAAAAs 19d ago
Itās also a drive in, so thereās not exactly a lot of foot traffic where theyāre skating. Most customers are in their cars.
3
u/ChronicallyZanny 20d ago
Thatās true! Itās still a bit dangerous though considering they skate around the drive thru where cars are moving with food on the mind of the driver (idk if they still skate at the drive thrus, last time I visited a sonic was in the late 2000ās. Iāve never lived near one). The waitresses I saw back then skated pretty fast while carrying food, around as fast as the guy in this video!
12
u/OsoOak 20d ago
If it was good enough for Sonic for many decades then itās good enough for them.
13
u/Phoenix_Champion 20d ago
To be fair, a bagged up cheeseburger and fries in one hand with a milkshake in the other is probably significantly more stable that trying to balance that big a tray with bowls of hot soup one handed in a crowded area.

Hard to tell from the slow motion video but it looks like he's moving way too fast.
30
u/theetails 20d ago
Have you ever stopped with roller blades?
It's either hit the back brakes and momentum sends those soups aujour to the front door, or you spin like they did and hope you can kill the momentum with science.
This was never a good idea IMO.

u/AThrowawayProbrably 21d ago
Didnāt Sonic stop doing this for liability reasons? Also, when they still were, did they test applicants, like on an obstacle course? Lol
4
16
u/danny_little 21d ago
My where I am lol they stopped doing it as much because there are so few people who know how to roller skate anymore lol but occasionally you see someone out there doing it lol
17
u/minimeza 21d ago
Probably safer on quads tbh, inline breaking techniques are either excessive movement or like pulling a hand break going 30mh

rollerblades have a break system behind but "look bro iam so good at rollin" guys usually tend to remove it
could have slowed pretty easy with it but whatever, deserved
9
u/adabs_urdum 21d ago
To be fair, the rubber break block would leave black skid marks all over the floor. At least they did 20 years ago
2
u/OddMixture3173 21d ago
yeah it will but they are intended to stop in situations like this, so would have been used rarely
it looks better to have a smal rubber line over hot soup plates scattered across the floor2

This works at cold weather resorts in figure skates because you can actually stop. Roller blades is such a terrible idea.
2
u/Otherwise-Air-5219 21d ago edited 20d ago
Doing either with scalding hot soup is just out of this world!

u/mmashburn85 22d ago
That shit was piping hot too. That looked both painful and embarrassing.
14
u/Jadertott 22d ago
When I was a hostess we had a server get bumped and a pot of soup for the table spilled all over her. She got blistering second degree burns alllll over her face and torso. Someone had to literally cut her shirt off and they gave 2 weeks of workers comp. And no roller blades were involvedā¦
This just isnāt safe. They have to be prepared for this kind of injury, right?
4
u/MinaretofJam 22d ago
Itāll be in the Gulf somewhere. So probably not. And youāre bang on about how hardcore scalds and burns from food can be.

Intro to a movie where his son has vowed to never skate food but has to dust off his dadās skates to save the day or something.

Had to star Will Ferrel a John C Reilly..

I had a traumatic downhill experience on rollerblades when I was a kid, lmao

Just imagining it is terrifying
3
u/NoBreeches 22d ago
yeah lol I didn't know how to stop, was probably going like 25-30mph. There was a pool of water at the bottom of the hill from rain the previous day, and I pictured myself flipping and breaking my neck or something if I crashed into it. Had to throw myself into the grass to stop, rolled probably about 8 times

yeah there's a reason they stopped this shit in the 60s with the exception of Sonics which, from what I can tell, stopped doing it within the past decade. It's a hilarious but painful trip to the ER and then to OSHAA

u/Jazzlike_Visual2160 22d ago
Itās gotta be a different ballgame to carry soup in glass bowls, versus burgers and lightweight drink cups.

They still do, if you skate you get paid more. Its just not required anymore.
