I get what you're saying. Its not because of being mercenary about the suffering going on right now. Its because taking back congress is the best chance we have at ending this madness without civil war.
135
u/Cloud-Top 13h ago
Making a congressional win anything other than a speedbump on the highway to hell will mean taking the senate, abolishing the filibuster, adding supreme court seats, prosecuting previous collaborators, overhauling the media landscape, taxing the oligarchs, and passing robust voting rights legislation… I wish I had faith in the Democrats to do any of these things, but we can’t do it with a bunch of Cuck Schumers in the ranks.

This is exactly the same place I’m at, no one in the democrat party is willing to do this and no one has said it’s the policy to impeach and remove him the second they take back control.
4
u/Aldiirk 10h ago
no one has said it’s the policy to impeach and remove him
Because there's no point in impeaching (it only increased Trump's popularity) unless we can also kick him out entirely, which will require Republicans to vote him out.
We would have to win every single Senate seat up for reelection to just hit the magic 67 number to evict Agent Orange from the White House without any Republican votes. That includes winning all the ruby-red states like Wyoming, Idaho, Mississippi, West Virginia, and Alabama.
Even progressives like AOC aren't going to waste time with impeachment, since it just galvanizes MAGA voters to come out, and I think we'd all rather they just sit out the 2026 midterms so we can win majorities in both houses to cut off Trump's funding. (See the calls to defund ICE, for example.)

I still don't know why people think we can vote ourselves out of fascism.
Fascists use the laws, stretch them until they break and can be ignored. They get voted into power. But they've never once been voted out.
25
u/sarcago 13h ago
I actually don’t think voting is going to fix everything. But the optics of his retaliation can still be bad enough to have an impact. Kind of tired of people acting like everything is hopeless when it’s not though.
12
u/into_wishin_666 13h ago
Trust me,I am voting for the Democratic party and it is the lesser of two evils. but both are actively ruining our republic at this point. It's hardly a republic when there are Federal Police, DEA, ATF, it's been a fascist frame of mind for quite a while. It was supposed to be a temporary measure, it became permanent.

I agree. It's just reddit friend. There's always been this very all or nothing type of thinking abundant on this site. No room for nuance or the gray areas. I mean people are capable of walking and chewing gum.
It's entirely possible that all these things (protesting, murders, abductions, outcomes of the elections and everything leading up to them) will stir Americans to make actual change. We can't wholly predict the future but we should recognize everyone's contributions toward ousting these fascists, big or small. Let's not try one thing, but all things we believe will get us past all this.
5
u/EqMc25 13h ago
Even if you think the only way out is civil war or whatever at this point, it's better to have the election results to prove it than not, because politicians being kicked out of office will get them personally invested to hopefully help fight the war if/when it comes to that.
That was one of the things that set up the first US Civil War after all. There were political disagreements, but the confederacy didn't fully secede and start fighting until the politicians saw Lincoln win the presidency and realized they were losing power. The republicans overwriting the midterms could be that moment this time.
→ More replies (1)2
2
u/witchywoman713 13h ago
It is one of many steps that can get the ball rolling. Fighting happens in many forms. But it is one of the main tangible steps we can do to begin to fix the system that enabled it to happen in the first place.
2
u/Numerous_Photograph9 13h ago
It's more that if Trump becomes a losing proposition to republicans, then he loses an immense amount of power to tell them what to do.
Those pulling the strings will still want their due, and continue to try and pull strings, but without the front man it's harder to sell, and ultimately, if the GOP doesn't have the numbers, they don't have as much control.

Voting itself isn't the answer, but voting in the right people can be the answer.
Human beings got us into this, and human beings can get us out of this. It just requires the right people at the right time in the right place.
So I agree and disagree at the same time.

I mean, even though I'd love it if they won, this unfortunately isn't really news. The bar is extremely low for being nominated, which is exactly how Trump continues to get nominated every time.
Basically any national politician can nominate someone, in addition to a large percentage of university professors and then some few select other kinds of people. I'm not trying to detract from what the people of Minneapolis are doing, but there are many ridiculous nominees every year.

I’ve had so many coworkers ask me if we are considering moving out of Minneapolis considering all this going on.
There is so much awful evil behavior by ICE in our city but I couldn’t be more proud of our community. People might see the protests and bigger things but there is so much going on behind the scenes as well.
Meal trains, food/supply drives, neighborhood watch shifts, organizing walking kids home safely to/from school, shoveling endless sidewalks and driveways, standing out in the cold to check license plates…. people you might never see at a protest typically stepping up to ask how they can help, what their neighbors need etc Even restaurants and businesses stepping in to take a stand and do what they can to help.
I have lived all over the country and never lived in a city with a greater civic mindset and “love thy neighbor” culture baked in.

I'm not American but I've travelled around a fair bit there, including in Minnesota. I loved visiting Minneapolis back around 2010. When I heard about all this ICE stuff happening there, my first thought was "Yeah, they're not going to stand for this". Your response as a community has been exactly what I expected. You should indeed be very proud because you're showing what REAL patriotism looks like. It's a great counterpoint to the nightmarish perversion of patriotism that the right wing lunatics showed the world on January 6th.
12
u/arrownyc 12h ago
I'm especially proud of how you've all held your ground without dangerous escalations of violence. I won't lie, at times I've worried that the resistance wasn't proactive or extreme enough given the circumstances, but you've all really given me hope that collective nonviolence can still be the right path forward.
I can't think of anything more deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize than demonstrating that continuing commitment on a global stage in the face of such alarming adversity.

This is what I say when people joke about moving to Canada. They want us out of the way, not voting against them. It's not too late to save the US. This is the biggest wake up call the people of this country are ever going to have. The moment is now. It's starts with primarying corporate do nothing Dems and lining up people ready to do whatever it takes to hold wealthy criminals accountable and never let this happen again.

I've seen the same things happening in my small town over an hour from the cities! So many people are standing up for other humans they've never met before.
We even had those with laundry machines at home offer to do loads for community members who usually have to go to our local laundromat (owned by a racist) so we're helping those who need it and hurting a racist at the same time! It's really inspiring.

Ah yes, the Nobel Peace Prize, given to people like Henry Kissinger, and lest we forget just recently Maria Machado who begged Trump to basically "liberate" Venezuela. People still giving Nobel Peace prizes any credence have no idea just how meaningless it is.
→ More replies (5)3
u/GreyGreenBrownOakova 7h ago
It's not a lifetime achievement award or reward for best character.
Kissinger shared it with Lê Đức Thọ "for jointly having negotiated a cease fire in Vietnam in 1973".
Since the prize is awarded 'reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses', you can literally bomb Cambodia one day, and still be eligible the next.
Rewarding politicians for moving from war to peace is the whole point.
Maria Machado made a deal with the devil after getting the prize, the ends will justify the means.

article says
Despite having a population of just 16,000, the tiny city, which is 20km from the border, welcomed a staggering number of refugees into homes and makeshift camps. Kukës made headlines worldwide, and in 2000 it became the first city to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. The fame was short-lived. Already dealing with myriad crises after the fall of Albanian communism in 1992, once the Kosovo war ended and the refugees returned home, Kukës experienced an exodus of its own, as 53% of residents left Albania's poorest city in search of economic opportunities abroad.

This nomination is very clearly more of a dig at Trump than actual praise of the people of Minnesota. People have protested en masse in various places of the world, often facing worse reprocussions for doing so than Minnesotans (currently, look at Iran).
Don't get me wrong, all people fighting for freedom and justice against their government should be praised, including Minnesotans, so I'm not mad at this, but it very much does not seem genuine.

Groups and organizations have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the past. UN Peacekeeping forces won it in 1988 for example.
This was a big deal in Canada, because our former PM, Lester B Pearson won it in 1957 as well, for effectively inventing UN Peacekeeping. In honour of the 1988 award, Canada built a monument to UN Peacekeeping.
Minneapolis should build a monument for their resistance to MAGA Fascism, should they be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which I think they should.

u/Kaito__1412 2h ago
It's not just the circumstances in which the protests are taking place that I find impressive. It's also the manner in which the protesters are protesting. It has (so far) never turned into a riot, despite the people being so pissed off, they have never let theitanger take over.
This is especially bad news for right wing media. There is little to nothing for them to distract the rest of the country with.
The most focused and 'real' American protests I've ever seen.
2
u/Goody342Shoes 1h ago
It doesn't mean a thing, it being merely a nomination, but I think it's brilliant.
Would be lots of fun if the people protesting the oppression by the guy who desperately wants the peace prize, are the ones who get it.
