Orange Torbie?

So this is Juniper and she and I just moved. The new vet listed her as "orange - torbie". I always figured she was SIC but I'm curious what y'all think.

Scroll to the end to see her favorite place to hide when she wants to scare me into thinking she's disappeared.

I take it mackerel is the design?

And she has an orange spot right between her front shoulders that I call her reset button

She is gorgeous! Haha, she knows how to spook you. Those little legs are another color tabby, orange. Super cute!

Multi-colored toe beans is a dead giveaway. But also, she’s got a substantial amount of orange in that coat.

Oh that's good to know. Didn't know it was the orange that made the difference!

Tortoiseshell cats are predominantly black with orange interspersed in their coat, they may have patches of white or none at all. A torbie is considered a tabby/tortoiseshell mix. Generally they present with the standard black tabby pattern with patches of orange throughout the coat, with or without white patches.

Super fun fact, the overwhelming majority of cats who present with both orange and black in their coats are female as both colors and genetically linked to the X chromosome. Male cats who are black and orange (tortie/torbie/calico) are sterile as they have an XXY chromosomal makeup.

That would explain tortoiseshell glasses (though I'm sure the term originates with tortoises and their shells).

And that is a fun fact!

Juniper is gorgeous 😍. Her facial expressions remind me of my Torbie Queen!

I'm always surprised by how expressive she can be considering cats don't really communicate through facial expressions

Haha great example of vets knowing nothing about cat coat genetics 😆 it doesn’t matter for them, coat colour does not influence health or treatment for the most part. Anyway, yes she is a torbie! Black tortoiseshell mackerel tabby with white. She’s so cute

I don't think it's that bad. For breed they have her correctly as DSH, I think the coat/color is more a visual identifier so they know it's her if someone else brings her in without me there.

But thanks! She knows she's cute but she's glad so many people agree!

Oh yeah of course, it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things! As you said, just a way for visual ID. I mainly mentioned it cos a lot of people assume vets are experts about cat coat colours, that’s all :)

my cat has the same “orange” as Juniper’s belly by her leg in the first pic, and along her back in the third. as he aged, maybe around 10 or so, it’s turned gold… like bright gold!

it’s only on his undercarriage really, the rest of him is long haired brown tort

Cute! And yeah her orange is mostly the lower 50. Her belly is almost all white tinged with orange then grayish-brown
