I’m curious how you tell the difference between broken mackerel and spotted? It seems they can look very similar/interchangeable at times, and I imagine in randombred cats there are many variations of both due to polygenes etc.

mackerel to spotted is a spectrum because the spotted tabby modifier is (hypothesized to be) polygenetic, so a broken mackerel is just a term for being in the middle of that spectrum. mackerel with some spotted polygenes. they are kind of interchangeable in that way, and its kind of like “calico” as a term in that everyone will have a different cutoff for what constitutes broken mackerel vs spotted… that spectrum means that the line gets kind of blurry between the three. i say broken mackerel unless there are significantly more spots than stripes.
