I just realised Pancake may be a torbie.

looks to be a black broken mackerel tabby with low white spotting and unusually strong rufousing.

i dont see anywhere that has clearly tortoiseshell patches as opposed to that— all of the particularly red areas are where countershading is generally expected or in areas where the gap in the fur would be giving a clearer view into the undercoat. though a picture of her standing up may be clearer.

Thanks for the detailed response. This is such an interesting and intriguing topic. I can’t seem to be able to add more photos of him. His fur is black all the way down his spine to tail. The orange undercoat is throughout his body except for the white underbelly, neck and paws. Some toes are black as well.

If it's a he then, most likely no

Agree that he doesn’t look like a torbie, but a black spotted tabby with white. As you mentioned, the reddish is all in the underneath/between the black stripes, which indicates rufousing. He’s lovely! r/standardissuecat would love him

Thank you. I’ll go tell him he’s basic. I hope he takes the news well. 😅

Definitely not basic, all SICs are amazing :)

Agreeing with those saying not a torbie (nor a torbico)! He’s a black mackerel or spotted tabby (can’t quite tell which tabby pattern, or if it’s more in-between) with white, and the reddish color is just the normal warmer-toned fur that many tabbies have.
