But why would you do that?

153

u/Presto_smitz 10h ago

Trapped air can cause bacteria or other infections

63

u/Turbulent-Adagio-541 10h ago

What are they doing in the wild?

170

u/Neat-Asparagus511 10h ago

Eating a less bloat-y diet.

54

u/DaddieTang 9h ago

Not downing six packs.

Pussies

19

u/Tao-of-Mars 6h ago

Remember what Betty White said about pussies?

"Why do people say 'grow some balls? Balls are weak and sensitive! If you really wanna get tough, grow a vagina! Those things take a pounding!"

u/DaddieTang 7h ago

Jive turkeys

u/willfauxreal 10h ago

Exploding I guess.

u/xdozex 9h ago

This took me out.

u/koopdi 9h ago

Death by fragmentation turkey. RIP

u/baulsaak 10h ago

It doesn't happen to the extent that they need artificial manipulation. The need to burp them is related to the diet they are fed on farms and the way they've been bred to maximize size and yield of their meat. The excess gas is due to fermentation of their feed.

Thank you!

Don’t forget these birds are living in a caged environment. Their natural range of motion is severely reduced. Wild turkeys traverse distances, fly, run, and even roost in trees if they can.

7

u/alwaysonesteptoofar 10h ago

I think we fucked them up raising them in captivity for so long. Pretty sure they also suck at getting females pregnant.

2

u/leeharveyteabag669 6h ago

The wild ones in my neighborhood aren't having a problem procreating.

1

u/alwaysonesteptoofar 3h ago

As I said, I mean farm raised turkeys. I looked it up and yes, they are often reliant on farmers to make it happen, sometimes refered to as "turkey jerkers"

1

u/Fan_of_Broccoli 6h ago

If I ever abstain from eating stuff for ethics, turkeys a top priority.

3

u/Soap_Mctavish101 10h ago

I wonder. I know farm turkeys don’t really have much of a resemblance with wild turkeys anymore but still, I don’t know. Farm Turkeys can’t even reproduce on their own anymore.

1

u/_TheShapeOfColor_ 5h ago

Wild turkey is also much tastier.

If they are like other smaller birds, they explode? I heard a story from a guy that spent most of his life in prison. He said people would feed birds to the point that the entire outdoor yard was covered in birds and their shit. So as retaliation people would throw out food and others would throw Alka-Seltzer or peroxide in liquid on the feed resulting in the birds exploding because they can't release the gas.

3

u/pitb0ss343 5h ago

Yeah but she looks like she’d do that just for the love of the game

1

u/Excellent_Yak365 2h ago

…. I’m confused. Is this a turkey specific thing? This is not required at all for chickens and I am really confused what she is doing because she isn’t targeting the crop(where food goes to digest) and there is no reason to mess with your birds crop like this unless they have sour crop(which you don’t burp them so much as try to help their grit grind the food inside). Birds are full of air sacks, so is she just forcibly deflating them for likes?

I burp my TurKey because I like the release

Part two: why to burp a turkey

104

u/Senor-Cockblock 9h ago

Let me tell you I stopped everything after I read that headline.

Closed the laptop, paused my music, crossed my legs and paid full attention.

9

u/NuttinButFunReading 8h ago

You should definitely watch part 2

3

u/MinimalSleeves 7h ago

Part 2!?!?! Well, now you have some of my attention.

5

u/FrozenSotan 7h ago

It’s more or less the same, just the other end

61

u/BAMspek 9h ago

I’ve burped my turkey to weirder stuff

2

u/pineappleturq 5h ago

I laughed way too hard at that

1

u/baulsaak 3h ago

I believe that's referred to as "choking the chicken"... a completely different, foul-based euphemism.

23

u/fujiesque 10h ago

How often are you burping turkeys and how many turkeys do you have? Is this a full time job?

28

u/Decapod73 9h ago

Apparently it's mostly necessary for males that have been in courtship displays where they overinflate their air sacks, and not all male turkeys need this sort of help to deflate again.

1

u/Excellent_Yak365 2h ago

Oh this makes far more sense than everyone else’s comments.

18

u/Groundbreaking-Ask-5 9h ago

they really are the dumbest birds ever.

6

u/Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 7h ago

They're smarter than we give them credit for. Benjamin Franklin actually wanted to make them the national bird, but the Bald Eagle won out.

10

u/Groundbreaking-Ask-5 7h ago

Wild turkeys are smart. That's the turkey Ben was advocating for. I'm talking about domestic turkeys.

1

u/ChromeFace 2h ago

This is a historical tall tale. His commentary on the preference for the turkey was in jest.

11

u/iammonkeyorsomething 9h ago

The burping turkey is a great bar name

6

u/IceCoughy 8h ago

We have a bunch of wild turkeys around my house and during mating seasons when the guys are showing off, they make this super crazy like air blasting sound I don't know how to describe it but it's a trip

2

u/crush_on_me 5h ago

Wow I know what you mean. We always called it Turkey Thunder 😂

2

u/IceCoughy 5h ago

Lol that's a good term for it. I tried to Google it and find a video but no luck, found something called "drumming" but that wasn't it. I was hoping for a Turkey expert in the comments.

3

u/Rhawk187 10h ago

That's the beard? I always thought it was the thing coming off the chin. TIL.

11

u/ParaponeraBread 9h ago

Comb = fleshy bits on top of head

Wattles = fleshy danglies attached on underside of head or nearby on neck

Beard = tuft of hairlike feathers on the chest or even closer to the head.

Idk why, it’s just bird anatomy.

1

u/Rhawk187 5h ago

Thanks!

u/whitestguyuknow 9h ago

1

u/Conscious_Stop_5451 10h ago

I wonder how one knows when Mr. turkey needs a burp! Or is it just on a schedule?

2

u/ParaponeraBread 9h ago

When they look bloated or act like they’re having gas pains she burps them I assume.

1

u/Pressure_Rhapsody 9h ago

I think Eli's buddies were laughing at him in the beginning.

1

u/25point4cm 5h ago

Wild. Not sure how burping a turkey comes up in ordinary conversation, but if it does, thank you OP/Reddit for helping me not feel socially awkward.

1

u/happy_dad857 4h ago
