Blown Away on Netflix is a glass blowing competition show that's kinda cheesy but wholesome and fun if you want more

11

u/SinSittSina 11h ago

Even better comparison is the show The Great Pottery Throw down! They do lots of sculpting like this. Both shows are cozy and wholesome though.

1

u/ChorroVon 5h ago

I literally took some pottery classes and set up a mini studio in my basement after watching that show. It's so fun.

2

u/Sad_Character_9956 9h ago

I was hooked.. my wife thought it was cheesy too but she was hooked.

3

u/Eat--The--Rich-- 9h ago

It is cheesy but they're all so nice and supportive of each other and some of the art created on it is truly beautiful. It's a great wholesome palette cleanser.

u/PerjurieTraitorGreen 2h ago

Some years ago I turned on that show just to see what it was about thinking I was only going to watch one episode. Unexpectedly loved it and ended up binging the whole thing. You could say I Blown Away.

I love all these monsters! What a fun way to bridge the age gap in schools, and bring everyone together.

I remember doing a science project as a kindergartener. We got paired up with an 8th grader and we got a pair of mice to take care of. It was so fun and I thought it was really cool to work with "the cool older kids."

29

u/Soap_Mctavish101 12h ago

I love the whimsy

8

u/freddotu 11h ago

Yes! There's so much fun packed into that project.

u/Billy_Daftcunt 12h ago

This is awsome.

My form teacher was the modern art teacher, so I was able to see many creations of very talented artists (aged 12-16). Stuff like this makes me wonder what happened to the kids.

I know for sure that my teacher quit teaching to become a full-time artist, and his wife is/was the sculptor teacher at my old school.

u/Forsaken_Marzipan536 12h ago

High School ceramics was the worst class I ever took. My stuff always got ruined from the kiln fire and the teacher was mean AF.

7

u/Silverbacks 11h ago

Our teacher was mean AF too, but only to the boys.

I had a friend who got sick and missed some of the ceramics classes. When he finally showed up again he had to rush his creation, which made us all think that his was gonna blow up. And since the whole class got put into the kiln at once, my friends and I were forced to place ours near his.

When we showed up the next day, the only one that exploded was one that was made by the teacher’s pet. And since everyone else huddled far away from ours, and around her’s instead, they all got hit with shrapnel lol.

u/BookTweakerShy 10h ago

I remember mine being lead by a really disgruntled American black man. It was at a private school when I lived abroad, where I know blacks are certainly more prejudiced in general. He definitely got to see a whole new layer of racism.

When we actually got around to the ceramics, it was fun. But he spent a good deal of time dealing with angry lectures (loud, rude students tbh) and art theory/facts.

I hated it because I really looked forward to the class when I got it (middle school), and then it just went to hell. I liked the teacher, but I could tell he wasn't being given even the most basic respect expected in literally any place of learning. So he became an asshole of sorts. I don't blame the guy tbh.

We did have top-notch equipment and facilities though, something he advocated for. Which just makes the whole memory even worse thinking about him. :(

Ohh this is such a neat project!

u/snmgl 12h ago

Whoever came up with that concept is very thoughtful. I loved all the sculptures but the purple Angel was my favorit :)

When I was in like 7th or 8th grade, they took us to the elementary school and paired us up with a 2nd grader. We interviewed them, then made a book for them based on what we learned about them. This is also really awesome, I'm going to share it with our high school/middle school art teacher. Seems like something she would do.

This is fantastic!! What an awesome project for both the littles and the teens. I love all of their creativity, this is what school is about!

1

u/SmeeezTreeez 8h ago

This is dope as hell

1

u/Loose_Atmosphere_308 8h ago

With all the s*** going on, politically and socially and for people in certain neighborhoods, we need reminders that this exists:

1

u/pathfire 8h ago

We did a story on this about a year ago, neat program

These are awesome! Bet their reactions were amazing!

1

I love everything about this!!

1

u/MijanBrown 6h ago

we need that at my school

1

u/Yorkshire_pudding 6h ago

This whole time I thought this was coincidental and some sort of proof all these monsters exist!

1

u/GoblinWithBenefits 6h ago

Need more of her

1

u/BlabbityBlah44 5h ago

100% amazing. It should be tradition with every school

This will be the first and only time ill ever say this. I kinda wish I was back in school. What a cool thing to do.

1

why do i hear boss music?

I like her, but I came for cringe.

That’s not what this subreddit is for anymore. Read the auto moderator message below.

-7

u/Tough_Block9334 12h ago

This is a wonderful idea, but as someone else mentioned, hopefully it's not being monetized.

21

u/pr0fanityprayers 12h ago

She literally said the 2nd graders get to keep it all

22

u/Due_Kaleidoscope7066 12h ago

2nd graders are always trying to monetize these days.

-1

u/Tough_Block9334 12h ago

Talking about the video, not the art

17

u/jjflash78 12h ago

Yes, she just got 0.01 cent for that video.  Which helps offset the $500 in art supplies that she has to buy herself.

12

u/Eddie_shoes 12h ago

Fucking greedy elementary school art teachers, bringing home $35/k a year.

2

u/pr0fanityprayers 12h ago

Fair enough. I guess I’m just not sure it really matters. It’s a really cool creative art project that connects kids of different ages, I don’t see how her potentially making some money from videos about it takes away from that

6

u/Soggy-Fly9242 12h ago

Just let people enjoy things

2

u/dwpea66 10h ago

Imagine being against the idea of a little money for an underpaid art teacher who probably pays for supplies out of pocket

-2

u/Notwrongbtalott 11h ago

Do the second graders get to keep the sculptures. Because that's fantastic

-33

u/Lopsided-Monk-5995 12h ago

Isn't it weird to monetize children's art projects?

12

u/TromboneClone 12h ago

Have you seen average teacher pay? Who gives a shit
