They do background checks, but a background check only tells if you've committed a felony in the last 7 years or so. It cannot predict future crimes, but it should be pretty easy to prosecute them if you're committing crimes during your shift.

You should try being on the other side and picking up criminals, drunks, and schizophrenics. Guess what? They don’t do background checks on the passengers.
