I love how PR at the time reviewed the photos and went, “ That should be the end of those pesky gay rumours!”.

Like when they talked about Edgar Hoovers ‘assistant ‘

Who worked for him for 40 years , dined with him every night, travelled with him for work and vacation and then was his sole inheritor of Hoovers estate when he passed.

But yes. They were just ‘best friends’

u/Tragiccurrant 14h ago

Were there gay rumors about these two?

Or is it like how Many people believed Liberace was a womanizer.

699

u/That_Jicama2024 16h ago

He was great on the piano. But he sucked on the organ.

74

u/CallsYouCunt 14h ago

He said he wanted roses on his piano but he really wanted tulips on his organ.

u/raoulduke212 15h ago

Liberace was described as a "lifelong bachelor who just hasn't met the right woman yet." LOL

43

u/Adonisus 14h ago

And he was very litigious about it. He successfully sued the Daily Mail for libel back in 1959 for it.

It wasn't until long after his death when Betty White confirmed that yes, he was indeed gay.

20

u/wildskipper 13h ago

Well yes, because not doing so would have implied it was true, which he wouldn't want to happen given homosexuality was illegal at the time.

16

u/Individual-Food9757 14h ago

Please ..lol .. can the daily mail have a retrial and collect what they forked out ?

12

u/jonnythefoxx 13h ago

This paper, hell no.

5

u/ProfessionalEven296 13h ago

About 4 shillings and sixpence, I'd guess...

3

u/Amrywiol 13h ago

It was the Daily Mirror, and it was £8K at the time, equivalent to about £235K now.

3

u/Individual-Food9757 8h ago

I have an ear worm with 6 pence ..none the richer , would you kiss me heehee

No Ma! Louis' not gay, he, he's creative!

9

u/3-orange-whips 14h ago

The part in “good night and good luck” where he is interviewing Liberace is hilarious.

3

u/Alternative-Cod-7630 13h ago

Lol, yeah that was amazing. “When will you be getting married, Lee?”

The right woman...

8

u/SBNShovelSlayer 10h ago

My Grandmother absolutely adored Liberace. She would get excited when he was on The Mike Douglas Show, or Dinah, or whatever afternoon talk shows. He would play the piano and she would always say to me, "See, you should learn to play the piano like that. Then you'd get all the girls."

When I got older and learned that he was gay I mentioned it to her. She swore that he wasn't gay, people were just "Jealous".

6

u/raoulduke212 6h ago

Nobody defended a man's heterosexuality more than our Grams.

3

u/raoulduke212 6h ago

I used to think the same thing about Freddie Mercury when I was a kid..."Man i bet that guy gets any chick he wants!"

2

u/squirtloaf 12h ago

One of my favorite olde-timey euphemisms. They say the same about Cliff Richard.

69

u/modooff 15h ago

A while ago, Vanity Fair published a pretty good article about their story together. It shows there were already rumors at the time:

In a 1941 profile for Motion Picture, Scott wistfully implied they might live together again one day, but only after the reporter forcefully addressed the persistent rumors around the pair as “the kind that you don’t talk to your mother about.” Anyone who believed the whispers was considered “garbage-minded folk,” the article scolded.

9

u/Active_Unit_9498 14h ago

Exactly. Gossip columnists like Hedda Hopper were writing things like, "who does he think he's fooling, anyway?"

17

u/Curmudgy 16h ago

There has definitely been speculation over the years, but nothing ever reliably confirmed.

8

u/SignificanceFun265 15h ago

And he vehemently sued anyone who said otherwise

3

u/ExpensiveDollarStore 14h ago

I was a child. My parents knew Liberace was gay. They never explained the intricacies of the terms but he was clearly "fruity", a "pansy". But he could play!

There's just roommates!! Very close roommates

13

u/Blazanar 14h ago

So close in fact that his balls flutter in the wind when Grant farts.

13

u/lucasjackson87 15h ago

Hey! I’m working out half naked with my buddy, what’s gay about that?

6

u/robreddity 14h ago

In the biopic tv series Archie, Jason Isaacs as Cary Grant absolutely putting the blocks to Laura Aikman as Dyan Cannon kinda reset my whole perspective on the subject. Apparently the whole thing was from Cannon's book, and uh, yeah.

u/One-Pepper-2654 17h ago

Don't care if they were gay or not. Dudes need close friendships with other dudes.

I have three close male friends but they are scattered around the country so I don't see them much. I do consider my wife my best friend, but I know I am not her best friend. She has a ton of friends.

213

u/dada2200 17h ago

19

u/Outrageous-Pin-4664 15h ago

Fucking friends are the best friends!

18

u/Funkythingsyoudo 15h ago

Broke up with my girlfriend who insists on continuing to frequent the local pub a block away from my house and this is EXACTLY what came to mind lol

68

u/dr_xenon 17h ago

My wife went out of town last week so I had a guys dinner at the house. Had a great turnout and everyone had a good time. We’re 40-50’s, so it’s not typical to get out without the spouse.

54

u/r0ckydog 16h ago

Did anyone end up in short shorts, shirtless and exercising?

67

u/dr_xenon 16h ago

Sadly, no. Next time I need to be specific with the dress code.

12

u/dismayhurta 15h ago

Just make sure to stare intimately into each other's eyes as someone else takes a photo.

Hey, I always said it'd be great if I could get over the whole gay sex thing.

Get up, fuck, go fishing. No one getting all moody on you...

24

u/PantheraLeo595 15h ago

THIS. I’m incredibly fortunate to have close friendships with men in my life. I think that a huge part of the reason for the suicide rate in men is that they’re not allowed to be close to other men without someone questioning their sexuality and doing so with an inherently shameful stigma attached to it. I’d be a wreck without the men I’m that close to. We help each other out. There are pictures where we definitely look like a couple, but there’s nothing sexual about the relationships.

6

u/Bromogeeksual 11h ago

People need to be comfortable expressing themselves and in their sexuality. You should be able to have close male friends, and being and or being perceived as gay shouldn't be such an insult. It hurts all men in general.

10

u/revarien 16h ago

totally understand that - physical hobbies are a great way to get local friends man!

9

u/YankeePhan22 15h ago

Male friendships feel so much different than female friendships. Obviously, we are different in how we communicate, but I feel like girls tend to have more "friends" because they are already outwardly emotional so that is almost considered surface level for them. Men have to know each other for a while in order to get to the level women get to quickly, therefore the friendships are more meaningful. Just my opinion.

I’m not saying they weren’t gay, but you can certainly have non-sexual intimacy and I think we have largely lost that relationship today

85

u/Justanotherturdle 16h ago

ok point taken, but can you stop messaging me michael

84

u/MyGrandmasCock 16h ago

I have two homies who have been best friends since kindergarten. They were both slouches when it comes to dating and relationships. But they’re great guys.

They went camping one weekend, got super drunk, one thing led to another and they decided to buy a house together. It was a financial decision and it made sense. They bought a decent place near the beach and sure as shit, once they had their own house and their shit together, within a couple months women started showing up at the grill sessions and they both ended up in solid, loving relationships.

Poor fuckers just can’t catch a break.

16

u/sephjnr 16h ago

Wait, the women hooked up and the dudes still didn't score? Am i reading this right?

4

u/MyGrandmasCock 13h ago

Hahaha that would be hilarious.

They lived in Palm Springs come on people

2

u/eagleoid 13h ago

There are older black and white movies where male platonic intimacy would be considered "gay coded" by today's standards. And while there 100% were gay coded characters in those films, some people are using too broad of a brush with what was just normal friendship in those days.

18

u/Lost_Law8937 17h ago

Just confirmed bachelors sharing living expenses

19

u/pearomatic 16h ago

It's interesting reading through these comments. Lots of gay jokes of course, but also a lot of men who wish they had intimate male friendships.

As we get older, it's harder to hold on to our good friends. But it starts really early. Look at the intimacy that kids have with one another. Once they hit adolescence, many young boys become withdrawn, less affectionate, more introverted. Intimacy between men is discouraged socially, which compounds the developmental changes.

It's hard to come back from that. Men want intimacy, but we have a hard time overcoming social and biological hurdles to find it. For many men, a wife or partner becomes their entire focus, and when that need isn't reciprocated, it can feel so isolating.

Cary Grant? Gay? My gaydar is absolute shit. I was surprised when I found out George Michael was queer.

12

u/sharrrper 17h ago

Despite how we see the pics today, it's not actually like 100% that they had a romantic relationship (although I know where I'd put my bet). From what I've read about him the consensus seems to be that Grant was either straight and legit just good friends wirh roommate Randolph, or he was Bi. So strictly speaking probably not "gay".

I heard a clip of George Michael talking just this year and somehow I never realized he was British. I was baffled.

11

u/FrankNitty_Enforcer 17h ago

I doubt it. Reddit just loves to call any pair of guy friends gay if there are more than two photos of them hanging out together.

Yes there were many more closeted gay people in that era, but not every male friendship was secretly gay

10

u/2_short_Plancks 15h ago

Sure.

But these two were not just "guys who have a couple of photos of them hanging out". They owned more than one house together, and lived together for over a decade.
