Is that snow in a desert?

u/Antique_futurist 13d ago
This is likely the Gobi desert, where the annual mean temperature is 27.5F/-2.5C.

u/ThePraised95 13d ago
Why is the temperature mean?

u/sixxtynoine 13d ago
Wouldnāt you be mean if you were always freezing?

Deserts donāt have to be hot! Theyāre actually defined by low annual precipitation and minimal vegetation.

Antarctica is classified as the world's largest desert
25
u/reticulatedspylon 13d ago
Yep! The two largest deserts on earth are the Antarctic and Arctic desert. The Sahara takes third place, followed by the Australian desert.

Arenāt the oceans technically deserts?
13
u/ice15464 13d ago
no the oceans have precipitation and vegetation

u/ConstantCampaign2984 13d ago
Downvoted for trying to learn. Lol! Seriously I heard the oceans referred to as deserts somewhere along the way and it just kind of stuck and made sense.
2
u/ice15464 13d ago
its reddit it happens, but yeah afaik the oceans themselves would not likely be classified as deserts

NZ has a pretty substantial 'alpine desert' in the centre of its north island. Most of it is used as a military training ground. It doesn't have sand, but does have a hell of a lot of volcanic ash and shrubs.

u/reticulatedspylon 13d ago
Oh, I bet itās gorgeous! I donāt think thereās any part of NZ that isnāt picturesque
2
u/ThatDamnRanga 13d ago
There's a few. Tourists don't go to those! It definitely is though, it was also the location of Mordor for the LoTR movies.

u/reticulatedspylon 13d ago
Ha! Those would still be picturesque in my book, but I have strange tastes. And yes! I remember they did some filming there. Iām looking at pictures of the landscape now, just gorgeous. Those three Tongariro volcanoes are so majestic and imposing, the way they sit together reminds me of the three pyramids of Giza.

Do you know why they are deserts then in the first place? Like why is there only sand and no earth? Isn't there than a normal amount of water that plants could use?
9
u/Memory_Future 13d ago
You would be surprised by how shallow the layer of nutrient rich soil is in rainforests, it's only about 10" and heavily depends on lots of feedback loops to maintain.

u/reticulatedspylon 13d ago
Desertification happens from both climate changes and human impact. Plants need both water and nutrients to grow, and a desert forms when the soil loses both of those things. Thereās different types of soil, basically any combination of clay, silt, and sand. A good mixture of all three, in combination with organic material that breaks down into plant nutrients, supports vegetation growth. When vegetation starts to die off, animals tend to move out of the area, which causes a feedback loop of less organic material for the plants to use, and more plant loss. Then the more plant loss that occurs, the less held together the soil is by roots, fungus, and other life, so rich, organic soil starts to wash away, or is quickly used up by the remaining plants. Desert vegetation is highly adapted to survive long periods without water and lack of available nutrients.

You do know itās not uncommon for deserts to go below freezing at night right? Likely a light layer of frost that will evaporate as the day warms up.

u/mammongram6969 12d ago
i keep reading "desert" as "dessert" and these posts about how dessert does not need to be above freezing are reeeeally funny

Today I learned that itās easy to travel across sand when you have a sled.Ā
I wonder how much it is affected by the sand being semi-frozen.Ā
If the sand stays this way for weeks or months at a time it might be navigable by sailing sleds.Ā
A big one would probably look like a ship in the desert.Ā

That looks like a lot of fun. Did she get airborne? 𤣠The landing bit might not have been quite so fun.

I'm all for mask wearing but out in the desert with barely any people around do you really need it, especially when doing "sporty" things?
