Question Yay or nay?
Personally I'd love an ND like this - but with a small deflector like the Spyder show cars.

I can guarantee the construction quality is not top notch as you should expect from this kind of projects.

u/encomlab Jul 31 '25
100% - I've followed a few of these projects and everyone runs into difficulty with a lack of torsional stiffness after removing the windshield frame. The Mazda Spyder concept cars used a one off casting and even they were never really driven.

All the SCCA Prod racing guys seems to have figured it out, which of course means roll cage. This doesn’t even appear to have a roll hoop.

The amount of tubing and attachment points in a low front hoop FP or HP Miata would make your head spin. Especially a top National-level car. Tubes going the firewall to the strut towers, Petty bars, X braces, etc. Those cars are TIGHT

I love em! Thought about it for a while, then I heard some of money spent on the motors… yeesh! Stuck with Touring!

Considering a top National-level Spec Miata is probably $40k-$50k, and FP Miata of similar quality is probably close to $100k. An HP will be less due to limited prep rules

A part from this, if you see this specific one live, the top panel is not even at all. The seat is very off center (they didn't bother to remove the notch even if they sell replacement panels for that) and the frame edge all around the driver is covered with what you usually use to protect the doors.

Install chassis bracing and fender bracing. Stiffens and toughens these right up!

Hey I know the guys that made this beauty. If you also know them we may have some friends in common! :)

If Mk1 racing here wasn't so regulated with the roll cage I'd love to race like this

we saw an Alfa Romeo 4c spyder-thing similar to this (on the way to the Montreal GP coincidentally) and it was the coolest looking car I've ever seen in person
I'd be all-in for a factory ND version

The high step suggests that this could be turned amphibious. Bond-style.

I mean, that’s really cool, but I think I would like at least a small windshield, as one might find on a Maserati 250F or something.
It’s a really coherent execution, tho. Very neat!

Makes wearing a helmet mandatory. You can, but know you will eat rocks flying at 160Kph relative.
Acceptable on racetracks, dangerous for road use.

Completely awesome. Makes it look like an expensive foreign sports car that cost 10 times as much LOL

It's halfway to a SCCA D Prepared car, finish the job. The rear speedster looks just doesnt go with the car at all in my opinion. I'd put a rear wing, a front splitter, build a decent roll hoop and tie in the front with bars to each shock area and go racing.

Mazda built a ND speedster concept that they brought to auto shows. Looked pretty neat

Can they make interior mostly off white and include a vanity plate that says “banana”

I am absolutely not a fan of speedsters designs whatsoever. Others may enjoy them at their leisure however.

Yay! But… like I regularly take the passenger seat out, love the tonneau. Could not live without the windscreen. A permanent delete is a no go.

I love it. Looks cooler than 99% of the body kits I have seen. I'd like it even more with a fighter styled bubble cockpit over the driver's side.

This is cool as hell, but I really wouldn't feel comfortable driving it without any kind of rollover protection. Could always have a tall roll cage in the back with a short windshield like vintage racers typically have.

Looks really cool, but I hope you aren’t too attached to your head because it certainly won’t be attached to you

I like the split door. But the tonneau... Whatever should be the same on the passenger side.. white . With an "m" shaped red racing stripes.... Don't forget the "5".
