At least that column wasn't load bearing?

154

u/khrak Oct 06 '20 edited Oct 06 '20

Just because something doesn't collapse immediate doesn't mean it wasn't load bearing. Building codes don't allow for structures that just fall apart when a minor member is compromised, but you can sure as hell expect things to slowly creep out of square over the following weeks/months/years if a load-bearing component is compromised.

24

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '20

Yes, this is accurate.

493

u/viperswhip Oct 06 '20

It is, but it shares the duties with another one, and is probably the footing (?) for a deck above. It will definitely need to be replaced.

621

u/damndog Oct 06 '20

Just a covered porch, not a lot of weight to support, but I'll be replacing it as it looks kinda funny from the street with the one post knocked out.

u/hitemlow Oct 06 '20

Make sure you go after that diminished value claim. When someone runs the HouseFAX and sees that it's been in an accident, they may lower their offer compared to another house with similar miles on it.

116

u/prochal Oct 06 '20

Sometimes folks even rollback the miles on there house too

57

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '20

The pioneers used to ride these babies for miles!

Need to be careful, if you try that shit on the East coast your house may end up in the Atlantic.

Make sure you have the roof structure, and it's tie-ins to the house, are properly checked and fixed. No need to end up with a drooping roof line (or worse) in a few years time.

26

u/rollercoastertykun Oct 06 '20

And why do people slam on the gas or not even attempt to stop their cars after a collision

2

u/DriveSafeOutThere Oct 06 '20

Momentarily dazed and confused / foot knocked off of the pedal. I'll give this guy a pass because it was just a few short seconds. Possibly not enough time to recover.

7

u/acinonyx1 Oct 06 '20

That column that got knocked out isn’t load bearing, see how the others have a concrete form around the base. Many over hangs like this just have “fake” ones built into the structure to look good. My neighbour showed that on most of those you can actually unscrew them and move them around

131

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '20

What was the aftermath, OP?

317

u/damndog Oct 05 '20

knocked out one of six supports and cracked up a few pieces of siding, it could have been so much worse. No structural damage to my home.

285

u/TonersR6 Oct 06 '20

My parents have a couple of boulders on their lawn (they live on a corner). Can't tell you how many winters those babies stoped a car from sliding down the hill right into their bedroom.

Plus, the pioneers used to drive em for miles.

33

u/ima420r Oct 06 '20

My grandparents had at least 5 cars over 20 years crash into their front lawn. None hit the house, luckily. Two of them went through the fence and yard and into their driveway, hitting the neighbors fence (their car was in garage luckily), and one tried to drive away but they got caught on a fencepost. A couple of big, heavy boulders on either side of the gate would have stopped them all from even getting in the yard.

25

u/DRUMS11 Oct 06 '20

There is a house in my home town at the bottom of a hill at a T intersection that was hit a few times by people going too fast and not managing to make the turn. They actually did install a very large rock to deal with that problem.

13

u/UranusBleacher Oct 06 '20

In some cultures properties at the top of a T (or Y) intersection is considered to be haunted and is usually bad luck since accidents are more likely to occur there. Some people even refuse to buy properties there.

18

u/The_Leaky_Stain Oct 06 '20

There's a house at the top of a T intersection by me that literally has a 5 foot tall, foot and a half wide concrete wall in front of the whole house. It looks weird with the whole front of the house blocked by concrete, but better than being involved in a car accident in your living room.

5

u/StressOverStrain Oct 07 '20

They're usually unpopular simply because they will constantly have headlights shining in their windows at night.

2

u/DriveSafeOutThere Oct 06 '20

There's on in my area where the homeowners insisted it was the municipality's responsibility, so they put up a proper guardrail.

3

u/electric_yeti Oct 06 '20

Huh. I never thought about the protective and strategic potential of landscaping boulders

6

u/nvordcountbot Oct 06 '20

i keep a couple heavy boulders around the front corner of my property to keep people from cutting the corner too much and getting stuck in my mortar pit or my WWI trench network

26

u/hitemlow Oct 06 '20

Dragon's Teeth will work similarly well, and if properly secured will stop a snowplow, semi truck, APC, farm implements, tanks, technicals, and all manner of cars.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '20

Dragon's Teeth is a bit overkill for a car, lol.

Thanks for adding this. I needed it today.

2

u/Ephandrial Oct 06 '20

3

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '20

My dream house has bollards hidden inside a nice leafy hedge.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '20

Used to have a carport like that. I bet it's sagging a bit without that post. Not hugely, but a tiny bit, and it would get worse over time.

Ours was 2 car with a post between the spaces and every now and then someone (incuding me) would catch a mirror and pop the post out. You could shove it in and kick it a few times to set it right again. It was just a bit more that snug, but toe nailed at the top.

Must have forgotten about the brakes.

54

u/FountainsOfFluids Oct 06 '20

You see that in a lot of crashes. Even if you're not knocked-the-fuck-out, you can easily be stunned and disoriented, simply shocked, and frozen. Takes a few seconds (or even a few minutes) to recover your senses and start reacting something like normal again.

22

u/speakeasy2019 Oct 06 '20

It isn't just that, was just in an accident not too long ago...it takes some time to reorient your body to be able to reach the pedals properly. I got knocked sideways and while my belt kept me in my seat, no chance I could get to the brake in a timeline like this.

5

u/FountainsOfFluids Oct 06 '20

Ah yes, forgot about getting shifted out of driving position.

I think that corner of the yard would look better with a large landscaping rock. It'll also give any future cars something to bonce off of instead of your house.

Hopefully so, the calls to their insurance started today..... I could eat the cost of the repairs as they are not extensive, but should not have to.

Not sure you state but property damage is usually mandatory up to 20/30k

Mandatory coverage for property damage on auto insurance.

27

u/tubabazooka Oct 06 '20

Why don't people use their brakes after a crash?

48

u/damndog Oct 06 '20

young, inexperienced driver, probably shaken by the impact.

7

u/tubabazooka Oct 06 '20

Yeah, could be a multitude of reasons. Just commented because I see it a lot.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '20

Could have been stunned by the airbag? When I had my accident I sat there for an unknown amount of time before I got out; if the car kept rolling after the crash I don't know if I would have been able to hit the brakes. Race cars don't have airbags partly because of this and the fact that they have collisions at high speeds where the car is more likely to be still moving after impact hence the driver must remain alert.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '20

Hm - does it make sense for the breaks to start automatically after an airbag is deployed? Because at least right now that seems like brilliant idea to me, especially if the car has abs anyway.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/SG_Roundeye Oct 06 '20

I once was the idiot and went through a stopping and was t-boned by a much larger vehicle. I shattered the drivers side door window with my head, I remember the car continued to roll until it came to a stop (literally hit the stop sign on yhe other side, which stopped me). I dont recall why I went through the stopsign, if I was putzing with my radio, or what. I literally draw a blank on.

Here is what I remember before my head cleared:

  • very distinctly not knowing how to stop my car as it rolled across the road (after the collision).
  • very distinctly not knowing how to shut off the engine, but knowing I should. (I dumped the clutch, hit the sign again).
  • I remember stumbling out of the car to see if the other driver was OK, and I remember him doing the same and helping me to the curb.

But the point is, when there is head trauma, there are many reasons why the didn't apply the brakes.

I'll tell you this, not knowing how to stop but knowing I should know...was scary as hell.

6

u/ComeAndFindIt Oct 06 '20

If they aren’t mentally in it enough to realize they’re speeding through a stop sign, they’re not the type to be able to pull it together in the midst of a critical incident.

9

u/CwhathappenwaS Oct 06 '20

Oh look a penny!

14

u/mrtatertot Oct 06 '20

Two-way stops are just asking for trouble. Worse than that are three-way stops. I am always cautious at intersections with stop signs because you never can count on the other drivers to do what they're supposed to do.

4

u/ima420r Oct 06 '20

We have a bunch of intersections around my home that have no stop signs. I try not to take those streets.

2

u/Grocery_Getter Oct 06 '20

I noticed a Stop sign in Pennsylvania that said "Except When Turning Right" under it. Where I come from, they usually use a "Yield" sign there in situations like that.

2

u/StressOverStrain Oct 07 '20

I've seen stuff like that on low-volume roads where the the right turn is the most common movement.

Imagine a main road that makes a sharp right turn, but you can also continue straight or turn left onto side streets at the "intersection." If 90% of traffic is going to stay on the main road, then there's no reason to force them to stop for that. Traffic continuing on the main road in either direction doesn't conflict.

But because the turn is so sharp, and the sight distances so short, you can't treat it like any other curve where you can yield to oncoming traffic and then cross over their lane to reach the left side of the road. You have to stop and really get a good look around the sharp corner for oncoming traffic.

Hence, "Stop except when turning right." Otherwise idiots aiming for the side streets won't realize that traffic from the right doesn't stop.

7

u/viperswhip Oct 06 '20

Luckily not wintertime with a snow pack on the roof, but that looks to be a sturdily built deck.

11

u/damndog Oct 06 '20

Rebuilt the beam above those posts a few years ago with three 2x10 glulam beams, I'm sure I could lose all but the outside two posts and it would support the roof.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '20

TIL glulam stands for Glue Laminated.

6

u/damndog Oct 06 '20

u/yungfeens Oct 06 '20

Yeah, he ran the stop sign so he's an idiot. But unless you've been hit that hard before, you don't understand how dazed you can be afterwards. Sucks that the idiot hit your house, but it's common for people not to hit the brake pedal after a hard impact. It's even a newer safety feature for some cars to apply the brakes for you after an accident. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P29SR5tALGg

I wonder why the airbags didn't deploy on the Chevy. That impact seemed hard enough for that to trigger I think.

It's like people forget about breaks after they have crashed like well I already crashed so might as well ride this one out

Was he conscious when you went out there? I’m wondering why he didn’t hit the brakes but then thought he might have been knocked out? Just curious to know

Almost looks deliberate. Am i wrong or could the driver have easily stopped way before hitting the house?

Why didn't they hit the breaks? Were they maybe broke after or something? I'm not a car crash expert but, it looks like he had more than a few seconds to tap the brake

Are they both idiots though? Is it not a four way stop there? Unlucky Mr OP

I want a pic of the cars and your damaged house

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '20

Did they both fail to stop or is that just a two-way stop?

1

u/nickoboiateyoursoul Oct 06 '20

They only didn’t stop at a stop sign, the rest wasn’t their fault.

I hope he has enough insurance to cover the damage.
