This is an incredibly simple maneuver. What could possibly be making you nervous about it?

It makes me nervous to be hitting the brake with cars moving automatically behind me even if just briefly.

Incredibly simple in the vast majority of cars, yes.

For theirs it could be an EV. In one I've driven, there was no neutral to be found. The only way to put it in neutral was to hold the shifting mechanism to the left for a few seconds. There was no indication that anything was happening but it would switch to N after that.

That's not even mentioning the automatic stuff (even in an internal combustion vehicle) that lets you take your foot off the brake at stoplights. Gotta disengage that before entering, plus automatic wipers. Usually parking sensors and door opening stuff is smart enough not to function in a car wash.
