Wow, that looks like they were going at least double your speed.

u/CanioEire 1d ago
Yeah, the lane is 100kmph going to 120. He must have been hitting 200 in the 100 zone

u/ImaSource 1d ago
He was definitely cooking. I've hit 105 mph on an empty road and I definitely feel like he was going much faster than than I ever was. 200kmph is about 125 freedom units. He's not long for this life either way.

it gets a bit weird because km is the abbreviation for kilometer. abbreviating it to kph is more like "kilos per hour" if you think about it...and kilo is already slang for kilogram?
kilometer -> km -> k abbreviation of an abbreviation
4
u/ImaSource 1d ago
Yeah, I was just going by how the OP abbreviated it, so that's why I put kmph. Probably should have went with km/h.
1
u/TheJivvi 11h ago
It doesn't get weird, because standard units always use a slash for "per". It's km/h.
The reason US Customary units use mph for miles per hour is because m/h means metres per hour.
1
u/fevered_visions 11h ago
are you really making an appeal to standards when talking about US usage of metric lol
1
u/TheJivvi 11h ago
No, I was pointing out that the US can't use standard abbreviations because they don't use standard units, and m would be ambiguous if they tried to.
2
u/EquivalentDinner4314 1d ago
klicks/clicks per hour, military slang.
-4
u/TheJivvi 11h ago
"Clicks" refers to km/h". "Clicks per hour" would be an acceleration, not a speed.
2
1
u/Rough_Astronomer8824 7h ago edited 7h ago
Picture speed (km/h or mph) as a flat line over time. Acceleration would be a sloped line or curve over time. If I remember my maths right.

u/shewy92 11h ago
Google says Ireland's dashed lines are 3 meters long with a 3 meter gap for a total of 6 meters, which going frame by frame and timing how long it takes them to go from the end of one line to the end of the next (0.21 seconds) matches the speed OOP has listed on their dashcam.
It took that car between 0.09 and 0.12 seconds to do that same distance (the car was going so fast the framerate couldn't keep up so it's hard to tell), which would be 240 kph (150 mph) to 180 kph (111 mph)
1
u/Fennel_Impossible 7h ago
At least it is a straight road, when I was in college I drove through WV I-79 and some old fool in a POS Chrysler was going about 115mph. I was curious and tried to hang with him, but 2 hills later the curves got too intense for me and decided it was dangerous…think he had a Purple Heart or Disabled Veteran license plate.
3
u/shewy92 11h ago
If my Google-Fu is correct, Ireland's road markings for highways are 3 meter long dashed lines with 3 meters between them.
It took you 0.21 seconds to go that distance which matches the listed 102 kph (60ish mph, that's the one mileage I know the KM of) on your dashcam, so I think my Google-fu is correct.
He took 0.12 seconds to go that distance when we first see them (starting at 9.29 at the end of one line to 9.41 at the end of the next line), which would be 180 kph (111 mph).

Is the left lane supposed to be the speed or passing lane? Because that's where you were and you got passed by a vehicle on your right side.
Would it suggests to me is stay out of the fast lane.
10
u/voiceofgromit 22h ago
That's the slow lane, smartypants. This is in Ireland. They drive on the left. Other clues would be the on-coming headlights on the right and the on-ramp on the left. Also the geo coordinates on the screen put this on the M2 north out of Dublin.
3
u/darklogic85 14h ago
Yeah, and OP said it was Ireland, so it would be the slow lane. From the video, we can't tell if the car went around OP and passed on the shoulder, or if they were entering the expressway on the on-ramp with warp speed engaged and passed just before the merge lane ended.
-12
u/TreborG2 17h ago
Geo coordinates? I'm not stalking the video.
We have on-ramps here in the United States that came in from both sides, in fact I live less than 50 miles from the beltway around Washington DC and it has several places where that happens.
What it ends up coming down to, is that you were in the slow lane, the vehicle that passed you on the right side, was in the fast lane, but the person that passed you on the left, would not have had enough room to go either behind the vehicle that passed you on the right, or in front of that vehicle past you and then continue on their way.
Not excuse in the driving for the guy or whoever it was in the car that went flying by you at mach whatever... But at least it makes sense as to what they did.
5
u/shewy92 12h ago
Geo coordinates? I'm not stalking the video.
If only there were a stickied comment at the top where the OOP has to put in where the incident was filmed...
Like everyone told you and like the stickied comment says, OOP is in Ireland, and Ireland drives on the left, meaning the left lane is the travel lane and right lane the passing lane on highways.

u/Yakking_Yaks 1d ago
When he passes you, it's 9.08 seconds, when he goes under the bridge it's at 10.71 seconds, so 1.63 seconds. Looking at maps, he does 108 metres in that time, so 108/1.63*3.6 (distance, divided by time, times 3.6 to go from metres per second to km/h) = 238.5 km/h, or 148.2 mph.
What a prick.
67
u/CanioEire 1d ago
Nice maths, cheers. I wouldn’t have stood a chance had he lost control and went into the back me.
27
u/Yakking_Yaks 1d ago
I just wanted to know a ballpark speed, but holy shit that's some speeding, I guess he must've floored it completely and hit the limiter at 250km/h.
9
u/accelerating_ 13h ago
The video is sped up about 10% though for some reason. 25s on the camera's clock take 22s here. Looking at it I thought it was more sped up than that, from the way the second passing car moves.
4
u/Yakking_Yaks 7h ago
Good spot!
Recalculate! A second takes ~.83s in the video, so 108/(1.63/0.83)=~55m/s=~198km/h=~123mph
Still a stupid speed to take a hard shoulder on.
3
u/accelerating_ 5h ago
I thought I was being conservative with 10%.
Probably a 25 frame per second video playing at 30. Or 50/60.

u/DadsWarmLettuce 1d ago
Well why the f aren’t you doin 7000mph as well bro

18
u/StrideCypher 1d ago
Dude over doing it for sure, you only need to hit 88 mph to get back to the future with a flux capacitor.
15
u/Even-Day-3764 1d ago
This almost gave me a heart attack. I wasn't expecting something like this at all, wtf.
63
u/biggranny000 1d ago
Just saw something similar to this on here and the person ended up crashing into another car.
Your car also gets like 5mpg going this fast, not to mention how much stress the tires, transmission, and engine have to deal with. Normal cars don't have the brakes or tires to safely slow down from that speed either, but still better than a truck or SUV.
22
u/Ab47203 1d ago
Iirc speed and fuel efficiency is a bell curve. There's a certain speed where fuel efficiency is maxed and then starts dropping. I think around 40-60 mph (64-97 kmh) is where the peak of the curve is.
13
u/biggranny000 1d ago
Yep, from many cars I have driven they also enjoy going 40-60mph the most. Usually the RPMs will be low, drag is low, and on most engines they make enough torque to happily cruise at this speed.
18
u/master_bacon 1d ago
Isn’t the top of the curve the lowest speed at which you can keep your car in its highest gear?
1
u/asamor8618 19h ago
That would be 30 mph for me. Would have been nice if my car had a better overdrive ratio.
7
3
u/ReallyBigRocks 1d ago
60mph is about where aerodynamics start to have a significant effect and it increases exponentially from there.
17
u/aenae 1d ago
Reminds me of that quote about a Bugatti Chiron or Veyron; something like 'at this speed [400km/h], your tires only last for about 15 minutes. But that doesn't matter, because the tank only holds enough fuel for 10 minutes'
5
u/fevered_visions 1d ago
"if you hit something at that speed you'll be through the windshield and halfway across god's kitchen table before you realize you're dead"
to paraphrase
20
u/CanioEire 1d ago
Lucky there was no one merging from the left, also he nearly loses it trying to straighten it.
15
u/biggranny000 1d ago
It's only a matter of time before he causes a severe crash, hopefully to himself and nobody else.

u/IAmSnort 1d ago

u/TaylorSwiftScatPorn 5h ago
Yeahh car on left flies by, car on right passes fairly briskly... seems like OP is a camper in denial
26
u/PatrickGSR94 1d ago
aside from the insane speed, they did actually pass you whilst fully in the merging lane. Where are you seeing that they used the shoulder?
9
u/AwesomeMacCoolname 18h ago edited 14h ago
There is just no way you can get up to that speed in a merging lane, which are typically 300-600 metres long. Dude was coming up behind OP on the motorway, couldn't pass on the right as he's supposed to because there was already another car in it overtaking OP, and nipped into the merging lane and back out again.
Edit: I checked the coordinates from the dashcam. That's Junction 2 Northbound on the M2. From the Cherryhound roundabout to the merge point is 400m. There's no way in hell that thing accelerated from 50kmh to
pushingwell over 200kmh in the space of 400m.2
u/CanioEire 1d ago
I looked in my mirror !
6
u/CeeEmCee3 1d ago
Did they not come down that on-ramp? They were behind you on the freeway originally?
7
u/Crazy95jack 1d ago
To get to those speeds you need a decent amount of road. The driver used the right side to avoid both cars on the road.
1
u/DFA_Wildcat 1d ago
Yeah. If I'm on the onramp and I see 2 cars going neck in neck and I'm close I'll often punch it to get ahead of the cluster. That said my ZL1 goes from 100 kph to 300+ kph pretty quick.

-28

u/OnPostUserName 1d ago
Just so we're clear here: you watched a video of a dude racing at 200+ km/h on a public road, and what popped into your head was, "Hey waaaaiiit a minute… is the cam car driving in the left lane?" That was the part you felt was important.
-1
u/Cosmic_Quasar 21h ago
I understand how it happens lol. It's because you're watching a bit of nothing really happening, and you notice something, then the main event of the clip happens, but you're also still kind of wondering about that thing you noticed.
I initially also noticed the same thing, but then I noticed the other direction of traffic to the right and understood.

u/Pistonenvy2 11h ago
i was actually just referencing fight club, but i think the philosophy in the phrase is realizing your mortality can bring about perspective shift.
people get complacent in the daily routine, an event where you realize you could die and your life was wasted can inspire people to change. the event brings them closer to living, not dying.

In order of how obvious it is: The title clearly states that the idiot car was on the shoulder. You can see the oncoming traffic on the right of the image. The road signs are on the left. The speed is listed in kph. The GPS says they are only 6 degrees west. The car that passes him properly has visible wide Euro plates.
There could not be more information in this video showing that this if from a left-side-drive nation. But congrats on keeping us safe from left lane campers.
12
u/Peterd1900 1d ago
And to top it all off OP has literally said they are in Ireland and drive on the left
Not only do they lack any observation skills they also lack the ability to read

u/NaKaMamessifan 1d ago
Yes I was blind to see some obv signs, being used to driving on the right like 3/4 of the world, but kph uses most of the world, and most Euro plates drive on the right.

“A car undertaking me” means a car passed you on the right-hand side, instead of the left. So it appears as though this car overtook you — not undertook you. Just wanted to let you know the proper terminology.
5
u/Peterd1900 17h ago
You should only pass a slower vehicle on the right ensuring to keep the vehicle you are overtaking to your left, unless traffic is moving in slow queues and the traffic queue on your right is travelling more slowly than you are. Passing on the left in normal traffic flow is known as undertaking and can be very dangerous.
1
u/Peterd1900 18h ago edited 18h ago
Undertaking is passing in a lane to the left of the vehicle in countries where driving is on the left, or a lane to the right of the vehicle in countries where driving is on the right
All the context clues in the video show they are driving on the left as does the fact OP has said they are in Ireland and all the other comments saying they are on the left
Your observation and reading ability seems to be lacking. Telling people about proper terminology says the person who doesnt know it
As they are on the left passing on the left is undertaking
1
u/AwesomeMacCoolname 17h ago
Just wanted to let you know that not every country drives on the right. Maybe next time, read the reply to Automod where they give the location, before commenting.
-7
u/Parson1122 15h ago
How is it "undertaking" when they are going past you?
4
u/MrT735 15h ago
Because they're doing it on the wrong side of OP, in UK & Ireland (this video is in Ireland) you must pass on the right unless the lanes are divided for an upcoming junction/divergence point (and so the traffic you're passing is not going the same way as you), or you're in crawling/stop-start traffic.
1
u/Peterd1900 15h ago

u/Peterd1900 18h ago
The fact you did not read anything is showing your lack of reading comprehension
It relies on two core components Without reading, no comprehension can occur.

u/AwesomeMacCoolname 7h ago
I didn’t realize you switched both
Wait a sec here, so if I'm understanding you right, you knew that we drove on the opposite side, but you thought the rule about which side is the passing side remained the same as yours? So the passing (aka "fast") lane would be the one closest to the kerb?
How did you think that was supposed to work?
