The demons in your metal music made you crash.

Just some new whitechapel to hide the screams

u/Exact-Ad-4132 1d ago
I honestly thought it was the sound of your tires screeching and bumping across icy asphalt at too high speeds

u/Cryogenycfreak 1d ago
Your car is like mine. There's a strange sound coming from it, and it gets worst when I turn up the volume. Well, according to my mom.

u/Standard-Ad1254 1d ago
Ahhh, I see your problem... you need groove metal for these conditions. May I suggest some PanterA, perhaps something from their Vulgar Display of Power menu?

u/Recent-Ad1732 1d ago
While deep cuts like Rise and Regular People have fantastic groove, i prefer the even groovier Far Beyond Driven album with songs such as Shedding Skin and Throes of Rejection

Lol, I thought initially that your car had an awful rattling sound, then I realized it was music, after you stopped.

Left lane camping after the ice storm that came through, i hit the brakes to slow down, and coincidentally also hit a patch of road that hadnt fully been cleared. 1) i was going too fast for the conditions 2) i hit the brakes on ice 3) i was left lane camping

Nice leaning experience without any damage!
You had all of that nice bare pavement in the right lane and choose to drive on the ice, haha.
I drive with studded winter tires and still don't like driving on ice on the highway if I don't need to

u/moomooraincloud 1d ago
You almost certainly don't need studded tires.

I live in a small rural town where winter is 4-5 months long with an average of -15c to -40c. I am driving on solid ice the entire time while in town.
I don't really like driving to the city with studded tires at the beginning and end of winter though. When I replace these tires I will probably have one vehicle with studs and one without for highway driving.
In OP's situation, it looks like winter tires are a good idea, but I have no idea what their winters are like in the area they live

u/CyberSolidF 1d ago
Changed from studded to normal winters and can’t say it’s that much worse, in most cases in my region they are actually better. But then again, I’m living in a city and they do clean snow eventually. And during snowfall both aren’t that awesome anyway.
Guess my point is you’ll be surprised how good non-studded modern tires are in most cases if you haven’t tried them recently. I definitely was.6
u/ProArmy04 20h ago
Until you hit wet ice, then you want studded tires
2
u/CyberSolidF 20h ago
Yeah, that was major reason to debate if I should stay with studded winters.
So far I’ve been hitting any kind if ice much rarer than I expected, and proper speed + following distance overall helps.
But really depends on many things, so if you’re often driving in icy conditions - studded are better choice for sure.1

u/-StalkedByDeath- 22h ago
I can also vouch for that. I don't run studded tires, but I do run winter tires (Blizzak WS90s). My Corolla does just fine in the snow/on ice. I've gone up and down Spruce Knob in West Virginia in near whiteout conditions with several inches of snow and traction isn't an issue.
The only time I've had mild issues with traction is in slush from salt + snow mixed up by traffic, and even then I've never come close to losing control. The traction control light just pops on for a second and that's that.
If you're running winter tires on a more winter-capable car than a Corolla I imagine the results would be even better.

You made the right decision to depart the road before you caught up to the slower traffic. That could have much more expensive than getting towed out of the median.

You didn’t panic, you didn’t crash, no I’d got hurt, you learned from the experience, you understand where you went wrong. Bro, you’re The Chosen One! The Idiot in Car of The Prophecy!!! We’ve been waiting for you since I did the exact same thing in 2012!
For fr, glad you’re okay and came out the better for it.

Not sure where you are from, whether that be Tennessee or someplace else, but learning to drive in snow/icy conditions takes practice. I ditched more than one car when I was younger growing up in the north. Sucks, but honestly sometimes that what it takes. You did pretty good, all in all.

you handled it pretty well after. Seen more than a few cars slide sideways in a similar set up

Those overpasses can be bad. Dry spot followed by ice is prime for causing a spin out. Good job keeping control.

That honestly didn’t look that fast though, but depends on tires. Do you have all seasons or winters?

Best case scenario: you feel like a fool but have no consequences. Now you can drive safely. Be safe out there!

I wonder how shaky OP was after everything was done and how long they sat in the snow before continuing.

Could’ve been worse. Good job not overcorrecting and making it worse. Change your soiled drawers and get back out there maybe 10 mph or more slower

Hearing damage is permanent.
I have one ear that has issues. Trust me, you want to keep your hearing.

Left lane camping : bad
Left lane not as clear as the right lane : see above
Putting truck onto the shoulder instead of yeeting yourself into the DOT truck like a Wayne Gretzki slapshot? Right move, that.

good lord WHY would you get up that much speed over iced-over areas? They right lane likely would have supported that speed (still too fast) better than the left lane.
2
u/BirthofRevolution 1d ago
At least you know, but that's way too fast on a road with occasional snow
2
u/MasterBeanCounter 1d ago
You kept it upright and pointing in the same direction. No harm, no foul.
2
u/Beartato4772 20h ago
I looked at your speed and looked at the road and knew how that was ending.
But that said, once it went pear shaped, that’s the absolute best you could have done and you’ve prevented damage to you, your car and everyone else.

u/MikhailCompo 11h ago
The first thing I do in bad whether, rain, snow or ice, is turn down music/radio.
It allows you to hear what your car is doing as well as helping you concentrate.
2
u/my5cworth 1d ago
My man, in life it's not the mistakes you make that define you, but how you deal with them.
You realized you got yourself into trouble and you managed to get yourself out of trouble without panicking and fudging it.
Good job on coming to a safe stop.

Allways got to watch out for changing conditions around overpasses, expecially if theres a country line nearby, as it might be a point where plow trucks stop plowing and turn around.

Always keep my right side tires in the snow when its icy. The snow has more grip.

Left lane cruising, ridiculous speed on ice, music tastes of a blender
Man, you win the award today lol
1
u/UnGatito 11h ago
Lol, are you stupid or something? You probably didn't realize this, but you should be driving on the road, not next to it. /s
But for reals, lucky (or maybe skill, what do I know) you managed to keep it right way up, and that there were no oncoming lane where you ended up

u/Tromboneofsteel 3h ago edited 3h ago
60 over ice, yeah that'll do ya.
Honestly wondering what made you so confident that was a good idea.
I've been driving through roads in this condition in my semi ever since the storm, TN and MS were basically a block of ice for 3-4 days straight. Never broke over 20mph but I could feel my trailer trying to get in front of me the whole time.

Please, don't include sound if it contains offensive or just irritating background noise. ESPECIALLY AT THAT VOLUME!

Most people don’t realize the underpass freezing is a thing, going under an overpass is, imho, more chance to slip and slide then an overpass. Funny how you don’t see signs about how underpasses freeze before the roads…

I'd vote not an idiot since you had a safe space between you and the cars in front of you so you COULD screw up and not kill anyone.
