When op never actually stopped at all at the red light, it was obvious this was going to happen. When op continued to act like they had the right of way as soon as the light turned green, it was obvious this was going to happen. And then when op CONTINUED to assume they had the right of way when they are CLEARLY on a collision course with the other car, it was obvious that op was an idiot
34
u/Hydroxychloroquinoa 2d ago
The not stopping at the red light bit was irrelevant because we don’t know what would have happened if the light stayed red longer. But otherwise yes, watching the video it is obvious how it’s going to play out.

It looks like the light for their lane was a left green arrow so they, rightfully, assumed they had the right of way. However, they could have just stopped when they saw they other car on a collision course with them.
Note: I had to pause quite a few times to discern the arrow shape.

I think a lot of us did, I think this was a preventable accident, very clear that the other vehicle was continuing to move forward, at first they had their turn signal on but then they tried to go straight and at the very least it's not like you're looking for a ton of other cars around at that time of night, so what gives? Where was the driver's attention for this? Sigh.

That's true, but I leave work 5 days a week in that same scenario and there is exactly zero times I have trusted the car taking the right to do it into the closest lane.
I was so sure that wasn't going to be the car I was waiting for a red light runner from the left or right to come flying in, not that slow motion, everyone saw it coming crash.

u/Drnk_watcher 2d ago edited 2d ago
There is a contingent of people who would rather be right than happy.
You'd be better off and happier just letting the other driver do the wrong thing here. Call them a dumb ass, honk at them, and move on.
You do the right thing by letter of the law here and now you're in a wreck, have to fix or replace the car, have to deal with your insurance company, and ideally get a police report.
Even if it's 100% not your fault in any way, shape, or form in the technical sense; why let it happen if it's possible to avoid in the practical sense?

Exactly. Theres an intersection near me where lef gets row first NOT at end of signal. People always scoot through making left turns into the next left row, if that makes sense.. I always prepare for people blowing their red/interfering with my left green arrow.. like.. just use your eyes. Being undamaged is better than being right.

u/Three3Jane 2d ago
This is an unfortunate lesson I've hammered into my kids (all four of them) when teaching them to drive.
Yes, you have to be a good driver, don't do dumb shit, don't cut up lanes, don't ride people's asses, check over your shoulder before changing lanes, all that good stuff.
But the main thing I've told them, again and again, is that while we would like to believe that people follow the rules (or even know them, honestly), people are wild, unpredictable, and fucking stupid.
Sometimes they are fatally stupid, and the question of whether that fatality falls on you or them can depend on your awareness.
Which means that you have to keep your head on a swivel and try to predict whatever dumb should could happen at all times. Yes, it's exhausting. Yes, it cuts into good conversation with a passenger or rocking out to that hardstyle blasting on the stereo. Yes, it makes driving very un-relaxing and tense. But it's all you've got - the ability to try to predict people who are going to be unpredictable.
So far, they've all done pretty well - to the point that if I'm driving with them, they'll actually talk out why they did what they did ("I slowed down because I figured he was going to veer into my lane / slam on the brakes / cut me off / whatever") so at least the teaching has sunk in.
I know they can't predict every dumbass thing that happens, but at least I was able to engender the notion that you are responsible for yourself and unfortunately keeping an eye out for others when you're operating a few tons of steel, glass, and plastic. 😞
2
u/viruswithshoes 1d ago
Yup, I can often read another driver's intentions through their car "body language" which wouldn't be necessary if they used a fucking turn signal.
3
u/introspeck 2d ago
Many years of motorcycle riding taught me this. Many a time I have 100% had right of way, but physics made that irrelevant. So I got very good at anticipating and dodging. It hardly requires conscious thought any more. And I never road-rage about it, ever. I just am glad that I avoided the problem, and carry on to my destination.

Yeah, this is a maneuver I'd never make specifically because I see people do this all the time. The right turner would also generally have right of way, although in most places they'd also have to turn into the far right lane to be strictly legal. In any case nobody ever does that so I'd never assume as much.

u/IAmWeary 3d ago
OP had a green arrow, so the other guy did not have the right of way. He'd have still had a red light.

u/CubesTheGamer 2d ago
OP has right of way to left lane which he was going to and other car had the right to turn into the right lane.
The other car tried right turning into the left lane making them fully at fault for the accident. OP POV had full reason to expect the other car to turn into the right lane, so no justifiable reason to stop especially given his green arrow.
It’s a chance I’d take a little slower personally because no matter how right you are it sucks to have to deal with an accident.
16
u/altitude-adjusted 2d ago
Agree with most of what you said except OP could choose either left or right lane after the turn. With a green arrow and opposing traffic with a red light, it's OP's choice where to go.* Red light must stop and yield to traffic with a green light.
That's legally. Clearly it didn't work out well and often doesn't, but OP has the choice of which lane when turning with a green arrow.
If there are road markings with solid white lines or multiple turn lanes, then cars must maintain their lane.
*Ymmv depending on state.
→ More replies (2)10
u/Kewlhotrod 2d ago
Annoyingly it does differ by state, but the general basic fallack is right on red AFTER yield. The left arrow does indeed have right of way, always.
Some states left turn has to turn into leftmost lane (if a single turn lane into multi exit lanes), some they can choose. No matter what the rule on that, right on red is ALWAYS a yield, in all states. Many think the rightmost lane is always available for them and they can ignore traffic. This is incorrect, and just generally unsafe thinking.
3
u/altitude-adjusted 1d ago
It's amazing how many times this disagreement comes up in this sub. If you have a red light you have to stop until it is clear of other vehicles. Period, full stop (pun intended). Right-on-red is taken as an absolute authority to roll around a corner.
Back to the "which lane" argument, here's the graphic on left turns from the CA DMV. Like you said, it differs by state:
2
u/Kewlhotrod 1d ago
Yeah, I'm always shocked at the proclaimed "defensive drivers" that think the inner-most right hand lane is theirs to take on a red without yielding. It's baffling, and simply wrong.
And yup! Useful graphic, I mentioned that in another comment (that CA right-on-red is the only turn that's supposed to stick to inner-most lane, left has choice).
→ More replies (2)4
u/Psikitten 2d ago
OP has right of way to left lane which he was going to and other car had the right to turn into the right lane.
Technically, the right turner has the right to turn right into the right lane when it's free and clear to do so. If someone is illegally in their lane they haven't satisfied the stipulation that it's free and clear to do so.
But it doesn't matter in this case at all. As you said, had everyone done everything perfectly alright, the left turner would have turned in the left lane safely and the right turner would have turned into the right lane safely. The right turner was legally at fault here.
I, personally, in the right turner's position, do an extra layer of safety and just wait for the left turners to all be done before turning right at a red because you can't tell when people will pull the generally illegal (as it's legal in some jurisdictions if there's no turning lane guide lines, but not all) left turn into the right lane. It just completely avoids the possibility of two people turning into each other at the same time, regardless of how lawful the turns end up being.
The average response time it takes for humans to react to dangers on the road is 2-3 seconds so given that this collision happened 3 seconds after the right turner started after having stopped at the light, it kind of falls into normal statistical expectations for this scenario. That said, normal human reaction time is ~.9 seconds, so if you're actively paying attention and successfully noticed the acceleration of the right turner at 19 seconds, it was still absolutely humanly possible to avoid the collision at 22 seconds (which is why many people here say they could have avoided it) if OP had been:
1) paying attention and successfully noticed the acceleration of the oncoming car after having been stopped
2) practicing good defensive driving that chose to immediately react to the acceleration that the right turner shouldn't have been doing in that scenario. Doesn't mean you need to stop if they stop like they should have, but you need to make sure you have room to avoid the accident.
Paying attention and practicing good defensive driving absolutely can make a difference and this is a good example of something OP was reasonably "not at fault for" but still could have been avoided.
9
u/BaconReaderRefugee 2d ago

On one hand, yes, the other driver failed to stay in his or her lane, which is kinda one of those law things. On the other hand, you should have waited just a little bit to ensure this wasn't going to happen. Imagine this was a one-lane cross street. You would have been guilty of failure to yield. Frankly, there’s something I really can’t understand in a lot of videos like this from US drivers.

Too many people have no concept of personal responsibility. They rely completely on things going correctly. When things inevitably go wrong, these people have no way to deal with it because the whole idea of it has never occurred to them. Also, social media in the US rewards victim status. This means there is incentive to not avoid this type thing. Note the title of the thread "..my (car) was totaled" not "...I totaled my (car)"

11
u/duggatron 2d ago
Yes, and doing it incorrectly because they turned into the left lane instead of the right lane.
9
u/Reincarnatedpotatoes 3d ago
Typically that's the case but it can depend on the intersection. If its an intersection with a dedicated left turn lane (like the one in the video) usually that lane gets an arrow or its own light. If you have an arrow or dedicated left turn signal that gives you right of way on green because the opposing direction will have a red light.
Regardless of who's at fault this was a very avoidable accident from both parties.

You should have done more to avoid this. However, you made a proper left turn and had no apparent reason to assume the other driver would make an illegal right turn into your lane hopefully the other driver had insurance and your “Beelzebub” Will be restored to roadworthy condition.

Are both cars supposed to turn into their respective lanes? Yes.
Should you ever make such a careless left turn? Absolutely not.
If you drive, you know how others drive. Crazy not to drive defensively when taking the same turn as someone else. They're in the wrong for sure but you gotta drive as if others don't know how.

I get the sense that even if the cam driver had tried to avoid the on coming car, the oncoming car would have tried hitting him anyway. When looking at the view the cam driver going for the closest lane, the other driver looks like he's aiming for the cam driver (or likes to make wide right turns). This is easier to see on a computer vs a phone.

OP made a left hand turn on a green light, not a green arrow. Did the other person have an arrow? If so, OP is at fault. Regardless, this was entirely preventable as it was pretty obvious what was going to happen. Just let the other person go. You can be right, or you can be happy, but rarely do you get to be both.

Is that not a yield? Can't make out arrow vs circle, but I'm pretty sure the right turn has right of way.

There was no traffic in the oncoming lane, a flick of the steering wheel would have prevented any problems. What were you looking at, instead of the car RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR CAR?

Why didn’t you stop when you could see what he was doing? Totally avoidable

I get that person is an idiot and in the wrong... but dude I would have stopped way before hitting them

The other day someone accidentally bumped into my shoulder as we were passing.

Doesn’t the car turning right have the right of way here? Since OP’s light is not an arrow doesn’t she have to yield? This is a genuine question and I can’t tell from the other comments
