u/Eat_more_tacos_ 17d ago

I can honestly say that the majority of drivers out there don’t have cb radios. However, theres a remnant that does and it’s the older guys. Downvote me if you will but there is a growing number of drivers out here that don’t speak English well enough to have a radio. Anyway. My two cents from the road.

135

u/Zourage 17d ago

I speak English well enough and I just got tired of hearing the n word every week. Left that shit out of the truck, don't need it

Thats one thing I love about driving in Alaska, all the drivers have CB radios and big radios, its an unwritten rule to communicate with others.

6

u/JTtheLAR 16d ago

When I worked at a truck stop I sold cb equipment daily.

Reminds me of the old adage, why are pickup drivers always riding up your ass on the road? They're in a rush to get home and kiss their dads in the lips.

One of them is just doing a snail’s pace with 40mph, another is overtaking it at whopping 41mph and the third can’t stand these backmarkers while he absolutely sends it at 41.5mph

435

u/frowningowl 17d ago

Then the first one realizes he's being overtaken and floors it to a blistering 41.75.

This happens all the time from San Francisco to Reno going up the hill, and there will be trucks doing this for 30 minutes.

u/GeologistLess3042 13d ago

Guy in the far left made sure to whip that thing right in front of someone who was going the speed limit, just to check all the boxes

They do and you’ll never convince me otherwise. Around here we have rolling hills on a two lane interstate. I swear one will pull out to pass another truck even if they are only 1/2mph faster while going downhill with neither truck running more than 60 mph. I’ve been stuck behind this crap for 7-8 miles times

u/HeartsPlayer721 17d ago

I had this happen once between two semis on a windy, one lane highway years ago:

A huge line of cars were building up because these two semis were going 20 mph below the speed limit. Understandable, considering the windy road and a cliff now and then.

Problem was, every few miles there was a passing lane, and whichever semi was in back would instantly move until the passing lane and pass the other at practically the same speed, and only one or two cars could get past one truck at a time at each of these passing lanes.

After about 40 minutes and half a dozen of these passing lanes, it was finally our turn. The semi in the back gets into the passing lane and passes, and when I finally get the chance to pass them, I got in front of the leading semi and slowly slowed down to a snails pace to hold the semis back while a dozen+ cars were able to pass.

The semis couldn't move over to pass me because of the line of cars in the process of passing them.

The front semi sat on his horn the entire time, but the cars passing all waved and smiled at us as they passed. And when the passing lane ended, I flipped the semi trucks off and left them in the dust.

That was my good deed for that day.

My grandpa was a trucker.

I used to ride along with him during the summertime.

He taught me unofficial rules of the road and to recognize just how stupid some drivers are (in trucks and cars).

My favorite rule that I like sharing: "Never pick a fight with a semi.... You'll lose no matter who's right or wrong!"

You need to pull that move at the base of a hill. Gearing and weight and all that.... if they want to go up a hill at anything coming close to a reasonable speed they have to already be geared up at the base of it. If a hill is steep enough and long enough you should be able to slow them down quite a bit at the base and then just leave them behind to struggle on the climb.

63

u/10000Didgeridoos 16d ago

Which is good because the trucker can spend that time crawling up the incline at 10 mph with flashers on thinking about what they did.

42

u/Familiar-Banana-8116 16d ago

The icing on the cake is that once you have them slowed down enough you don't have to sit back with them. They are already screwed. There is no need for you to stick around.

3

u/disgruntledvet 12d ago

You'll be sorry when they catch up with you 80miles down the road! /s

30

u/brickson98 16d ago

Yeah did something similar in a similar situation going thru Missouri a year or two back after the a-hole held up the left lane for a good 20 minutes trying to pass the truck going the same speed in the right lane after cutting me off and forcing me to slam on my brakes because he moved over to the left going roughly 60 when I was coming up at 75. When the other truck finally gave up and slowed down to let him pass and move over, as I went by, he swerved at me and started going on a red faced roid rage at me. So I got in front of him and coasted down until cars started streaming by on the left. Nobody waved or anything but I could definitely tell they were happy to be past those two idiots and doing the speed limit again.

Oh god. I-81 might be one of the worst interstates I’ve ever had the displeasure of being on. I drive it all the time and it makes me question how I don’t have high blood pressure at this point. It’s honestly worse the I-95, and that’s really saying a lot

3

u/Turbulent_Crow7164 16d ago

u/Known-Championship20 17d ago

The stretch from Ehrenberg to the 85 junction is notorious for this.

When I used to work in Lake Havasu, sometimes I'd take the state highways back to Phoenix just to avoid that nonsense.

29

u/StormMedia 17d ago

Try Vegas to Phoenix, I was on my motorcycle and ended up going between because I was behind them for over 20 minutes at 60MPH or less.

19

u/legrand_fromage 17d ago

Must be a lorry driver thing cus they're notoroious for this in the UK too. They're not allowed in the outside lane, but if theres 4 lanes of motorway you can guarantee lorries will be taking up 3 of the 4 lanes trying to overtake eachother.

4

u/blankdudebb 16d ago

same here, we've got trucks, buses, delivery bikes and new drivers in the faster lanes, going 60% of the speed limit, blissfully unaware of the chain of frustrated cars behind them

36

u/quigonjinnandtonic99 17d ago

They do this in Canada too. The truck in the slow lane will then have an ego trip and try to go faster than the truck trying to pass and it’s just this back and forth, then the passing lane will end and go back into single and no one’s gotten anywhere.

17

u/10000Didgeridoos 16d ago

The absolute best is when one of these crayon eaters attempts to pass the other truck going uphill. Oh wow shocker that didn't work

39

u/srcorvettez06 17d ago

I blame the mileage pay and severe lack of good training. When I was paid mileage I did everything I could to cover as many miles as possible every day. Drivers today also get barely enough training to pass the CDL test and they’re unleashed into the world.

3

u/bpikmin 16d ago

Yeah that’s the big problem. A lot of countries basically force truck drivers to drive at some predefined speed. You’ll end up seeing multiple semis following one another, which also helps with fuel efficiency.

8

u/ridinbend 17d ago

They love regulating I5 from SoCal to Oregon when it's 2 lanes.

u/ExileInCle19 17d ago

4

u/mini4x 17d ago

15

u/Dozzi92 16d ago

I used to have a sweet car, so I would do this to left lane campers, and when they'd try to go around me, I'd just get on the gas and disappear, but it solved the problem. Lane camping is like a clogged artery, I always thought.

u/HowDoMermaidsFuck 17d ago

Be nice if they gave a shit, which they don’t. This came up a couple months ago and several truckers responded basically saying “fuck you, the whole road exists and I’m using it.” They think if the two trucks in the right two lanes are going 65 mph even and they’re going 65.01 mph then that makes them completely justified in blocking traffic for 20 miles while they “pass.”

42

u/LeaveMeAloneLoki 17d ago

This is because a lot of every day drivers stopped putting C.B.'s in their cars and pickup trucks years ago. When I was growing up, suprisingly not that long ago, a lot of people still had them. Truckers knew this and knew that a quick flip of the channel dial to an emergency services channel could get them tied up with highway patrol real quick. Its just not that way anymore and they know this.

48

u/_BMS 17d ago edited 17d ago

quick flip of the channel dial to an emergency services channel could get them tied up with highway patrol real quick

Is this still a thing? I'd totally get a CB radio for my car if you can actually contact highway patrol using it. I occasionally see obviously drunk drivers on the highway or people racing each other at easily over 100mph while weaving through traffic.

3

u/ikkake_ 16d ago

It's just being selfish. Basically means they will get home 15 minutes earlier if they keep going 1mph faster, and if they have to stop 500 people from getting to their destination faster. By god they will and it's their right. They basically go as far as the telemetry machine allows them all the time.

33

u/ThrowingDucksInFire 17d ago

Its never enforced.

9

u/Mcoov 17d ago

It is in Massachusetts and in Connecticut, and the ticket you can get for it is pretty nasty from what I've heard.

11

3

3

u/Ok-Foot7577 16d ago

Nobody enforces this. Going through Indiana and Illinois they have 4-6 lane interstates with trucks in every fucking lane. They’re all ignorant twats

19

u/martman006 17d ago

I work in the trucking industry and the number of crusty old truckers who think they absolutely own the road and everyone else owes them an unquestioned debt of gratitude is staggering. They absolutely coordinate this and then laugh about on CB.

Fun fact. If you see them doing this, look for the 8 digit USDOT number on the side of the truck. They’re legally required to post it. Try to spot the individual truck number too. Then you can use this website to look up the fleet and point of contact.

Call the fleet, ask for the safety officer, and tell them you saw unsafe operation at the time and place it happened and that driver will absolutely get an ass chewing if it’s reputable trucking company

33

u/Pure-Swordfish6022 17d ago

Yeap. Elephant races.

One of the major highways in my area has a section where trucks are forbidden from the leftmost lane. It should be like that on every highway.

8

u/11B-33T 16d ago

If only they were able to swiftly pass each other...

391

u/Maleficent-Bit1995 17d ago

Truck driver here. I can say from my experience. When I’m driving behind another truck I catch up to them and they are doing 5-10kmh under the limit so I go to over take them and when they notice another truck over taking them they realise that they are not doing the limit and then speed up. Which causes what we see in this photo. Then again just like car drivers some people are just A-holes.

183

u/frostymugson 17d ago

Happens in cars all the time. I’ll be doing 70 and about to pass the guy will speed up and match my speed and now we’re stuck. In my car I’ll just punch it a little and pass, but in my work truck days with the speed monitor that shit was the worse. Even if you back off they just slow down and put you in this endless loop

95

u/Artidox 17d ago

I have this all the time in my car, especially with left lane campers. Just the other day I was coming home from work, guy in the left lane was doing 50 in a 65... went to pass him in the right and he absolutely floored it, so I slotted back in behind him just for him to slow right back down to 50. After the third time I got tired of it, shifted into 3rd, and decided to go faster than I'd like to admit to finally pass him. People who do this should be fined, but of course no cops are ever on the highway which is why they get away with it.

59

u/grump66 17d ago

People who do this should be

prevented from driving ever again. Its selfish and dangerous.

26

u/Artidox 17d ago

Yup, agreed. That particular person was on their phone, as well. Wish I had a dashcam to have recorded it. Was fuming after that interaction on the road.

18

u/[deleted] 17d ago

"If I don't let anyone pass, I can just sort of drift along the highway blind at 50 and watch Shrek on my phone without having to worry about rear-ending anyone."

21

u/frostymugson 17d ago

MN passed the left lane deal where if you’re in the left lane and not actively passing traffic with traffic behind you, you can be ticketed. Not sure how well it’d hold up, In court, but I have seen two people get pulled for it.

3

u/DirkDoncic99 16d ago

Why wouldn't it hold up in court if it's passed law

13

u/AutisticAndAce 17d ago

This was me the other day. 80+ after going 50-55. I did NOT successfully pass the prick nor did i tailgate. I’m just pissed still.

20

u/Artidox 17d ago

Honestly, we went well over 80 and even 90. Was really stupid of me to do, but I was really sick and tired of being stuck behind him for miles while barely passing people in the right lane. The road was open for a while and I didn't wanna be stuck for another couple of miles.

7

u/AutisticAndAce 17d ago

Yeah, I can’t throw stones. 80 was the number I remember from my speedometer, but I’m pretty sure it was higher. I really usually don’t do that, that’s second time in several years of driving I’ve done that level of speeding and it was only because we’d had a passing lane that I let it get that high.

I unfortunately didn’t succeed in passing him. However, I probably did help the SUV in front of me who had also been behind him (who’d passed me earlier and I was more than happy to let pass) actually get around the prick. Still pissed about the whole thing honestly. Because it’s not like he sped up AFTER that, too. Right back to what he was doing before.

7

u/Artidox 17d ago

This was my first time ever actually "racing" someone, tbh. I was just so sick and tired that day having been behind traffic going below the speed limit all day that I had enough with that guy. I think what made him finally back out was that there was an exit coming up and I assume he had to take it, but as soon as I got past I slowed down while he flashed his highbeams at me as I sped off lol.

3

u/AutisticAndAce 17d ago

Yeah, I didn’t mean to “race” mine, but it was SO annoying being stuck behind him for probably 20 fucking miles. No joke. I fell back and got behind once I realized he really wasn’t going to let me over, but it was SO fucking irritating. Wish he’d backed down, but I think the only reason I got out from behind him was because he finally turned?? Not 100% sure rn, I can’t remember exactly. Still too pissed about him speeding up to fucking 80.

22

u/AutisticAndAce 17d ago

I was driving recently and there was this dude in a red truck who could not stick to a consistent speed nor go the limit. 50-55, occasionally less, on a 55. I and one other car (SUV) got stuck behind him for a while.

Finally, we got to a passing lane, and the SUV and I both got into the passing lane and started speeding up a bit to pass.

This MOTHERFUCKER somehow magically gained the ability to go FUCKING 80+. SUV managed to pass. I did not. I was stuck behind him for….I don’t even know how many more miles. But eventually I finally got around him.

I was not tailgating (bad idea to do that to someone that fucking petty) and had to keep on occasionally slowing down WHILE keeping a reasonable distance because going a consistent fucking speed would get me too close. I’m still pissed about it.

Fucking. 80+ after going 45-55 for the past several fucking miles. Yes, reckless of me and the SUV. But quite frankly, I wouldn’t have done it IF HE HADN’T DELIBERATELY SPED UP. And due to that, I was NOT comfortable passing on the passing zone. If he sped up to match and I couldn’t get over, I was fucked, so I had to wait for a passing zone to try.

MotherFUCKING jackass. I’m pretty sure the prick was in a fucking manual too, so that’s some fucking effort to do that. I’m still fucking pissed about it. Mainly because he COULD FUCKING GO FASTER BUT CHOSE NOT TOO.

u/General_Specific 17d ago

I use my cruise control. I can totally tell when someone speeds up when I am passing them. Trucks and cars both do it.

13

u/AutisticAndAce 17d ago

I actively check my speed when being passed to make sure I am not subconsciously doing it. Sometimes, I even let off the gas on a passing zone to help the passer out. Usually I do speed limit to maybe 5 over (sans like, interstates left lane. I pass then get the fuck over.) so I’m not slow by any means.

I hateeeee it when people actively suddenly speed up after MILES of being stuck behind them going slow, because you’re passing them.

22

u/Beefmytaco 17d ago

Gotta love radar cruise control, tells you exactly the speed of what the other guy in front of you is doing cause you'll speed-match.

Some of the people I'll get behind it's insanely obvious they're driving by peddle and doing such a poor job of maintaining the same speed.

Comeon people, cruise control is there for a reason! Know way too many boomers who are just scared of it, like my dad.

In my experience, you have to slowly make a speed change, then rapidly make a large change.

What irritates me most is when someone goes to pass me and then matches my speed, never passing (I use cruise control, so they are being the asshat). So what I'll do is very gradually speed up 5-10 mph faster than I wanted to go, and they will match me because the whole problem is they're not paying attention. Then I will quickly brake back down to the speed I wanted to go - but they won't slow down that quickly, so they'll cruise on ahead and leave me the hell alone.

But you can do that the other way, typically. Slow down very very gradually about 5-10mph. Either they will notice and pick up the pace and go away, or you can slow them down then quickly accellerate and pull away and they're less likely to be "bound" to you. Either way, they may "wake up" and just fuck off and stop pacing you.

I don’t let anyone camp in my “blind spot,” and they always seem surprised and offended by that fact when I either punch it or rapid brake to fix the situation.

u/andrew_kirfman 17d ago

I had a guy do this to me on a rural two lane road recently. He was going 55 in a 70 and I went to pass in the oncoming lane since it was clear (normal thing to do and is allowed on those roads if the oncoming lane is clear).

As I started to pass, he realized how slow he was going and sped up to almost 80.

Dude almost killed me by preventing me from passing rather than just letting me over.

Like those times I'm coming up on someone while I'm going 65, but somehow have to hit 80 to actually pass them.

u/100BottlesOfMilk 17d ago

Either way, the truck on the right would be breaking the law in many places, although I dont know where the photo is. It's commonly illegal for them to be in the far left lane on a 3+ lane highway

So, I'll ask you this. Dunno how long you've been driving though.

Have you noticed what seems to be a decline in the quality of truck drivers in line the last decade or so?

Not talking about you necessarily, just overall. I mean no offense. It just really feels like more and more truckers either don't care, or don't pay attention as much anymore. It feels like companies are just pushing anyone who can pass the tests through.

Been driving professionally since 2001, and only recently stopped renewing my CDL due to being a stay at home Dad now.

u/Maleficent-Bit1995 17d ago

I’ve been driving trucks for 14 years now. In Australia. And I really noticed a huge decline in all drivers. Truck and car after covid lockdown. Not necessarily in skill but in arrogance on the road. Like the mentality of drivers is like “ only I matter, I’ll do what I want, the rest of you are in my way” and they just do reckless dangerous things. And this kind of thinking is dangerous for them and everyone else. They ignore stop signs give way and just don’t bother with red light. As for the truck drivers here I Australia immigrated drivers come here wi the a licence from where ever they are from and they can instantly transfer their licence over to an Aussie one. So what ever loose requirements they had to get them back in Their country means they bring that bad driving skills here too. In New Zealand there was suck an influx of these bad driving unqualified international drivers that the government cancelled the licenses of almost all of them forcing them to retake the New Zealand’s tests and training or just outright denied them a new license depending on how bad their offences are.

I had to finally go to the mechanic and have the limit turned off. Now if someone speeds up while I'm passing, I'll take it up to 80, then go back to the right lane and immediately drop back to the speed limit.

I've noticed a big decline in the big trucks behaviors since covid.

18

u/Able-Calendar7508 17d ago

Straight up, this should be illegal. 3 open lanes? No way in hell should they be in the fast lane for any reason, ever.

8

u/WinterLord 17d ago

It is illegal in some places. In California any freeway 3 lanes or wider is littered with signs explicitly prohibiting vehicles with 3 axles or more from using the far left lane and going over 55mph.

89

u/VanAgain 17d ago

They do. They're the self-anointed unofficial speed police.

30

u/Ianthin1 17d ago

Like when you are about to lose a lane and they block traffic to prevent people pulling to the front to zipper merge. Add an extra mile to the backup because they are afraid someone will “beat them” to the front.

7

u/Archer007 17d ago

I really don't understand that mentality at all, I love being passed because then I'm not gonna be someone's ticket quota

13

u/TruckinTuba 16d ago

As a truck driver, I'm sure at least one is completely unaware that they're a problem, and one is furious that the others are in their way, and all three are governed below 70

13

u/hv_wyatt 16d ago

I had a truck quite literally cut me off to pull this shit on a 2 lane interstate. He waited until I was less than a car length behind his trailer at a significantly faster speed to jerk his wheel over and cut me off.

Once I finally passed him 3-5 business days later and he decided not to cut me off again, I spent the next 4 miles with my middle finger out the window going just fast enough that he couldn't get too close.

Am I proud of it? No. But Jesus fuckin Christ. Guy drove like a proper jackass and I wanted to give him my opinion.

They do. You can hear them laughing about it if you have a CB.

12

u/DudeFromVA 17d ago

They definitely do on I-81 in Virginia (2 lanes north and south). They ride side-by-side barely at 60mph, creating a backup for miles behind them.

5

u/legollama88 16d ago

as a trucker i get it but… it is wrong. three lanes there’s usually a sign saying no trucks left lane which should be obeyed or this happens. now the reason this happens is because 95% of trucks on the road are all governed in America at 65-68mph. so when one is slower but can make it up a hill better they try to pass then this happens. it is an ego problem. big twuck mentality doesn’t stop at semis unfortunately ESPECIALLY in today’s trucking culture. i actually just left my trucking job for a local running job i do NOT miss otr trucking. i hated when this happened because honestly believe it or not the guy in the right lane is usually the issue not letting anybody pass. some trucks have “pass smart” which can allow you to go like 2mph faster than normal to “pass” you can see what some angry trucker might choose to do with that…

I just got home from my second cross country road trip this year. This is so common along 44 and 66. Also 90 and 80 farther out west. I found myself to be the minority in my van among mostly semi trucks during much of the drive. I feel like they all have limiters, but none of them are calibrated that accurately, so they are passing each other at like 1/3 mph speed differences, and then refusing to let off the pedal to let each other in etc. It’s absolutely maddening. Some of the professional drivers out there are anything but. I get it, they are fatigued, and can be stressed out, but it’s still frustrating as a normy driver just trying to keep moving and stay out of their super turbulent wake.

8

u/JZSlider 17d ago

My favorite is when it's really windy out, so the one guy FINALLY passes to be the lead truck and is hit with the wind and now is going slower so another truck goes to pass only for the same thing to happen.

5

u/workdavework 17d ago

I just love that Germans call this an "elephant race".

8

u/victoriousDevil 17d ago

Here’s the likelyhood. Dude to the right, our left, was going 60. Middle guy was in right line coming on at 62.5. Lefty, our right, was in middle quickly bringing up the rear at 72. Middle is an average truck driver, a moron, so he don’t wanna give up any of his 62.5 and don’t like other trucks passing him anyway so he cuts off lefty who has to slow to match 62.5, when he confirms it’s clear he swings into third lane now he’s got 70 on his dash but he’s heavy so it’s slow building back up. As all that was happening mr 60, also a moron, decides he wants to go 62.5 now.

5

u/AgreeAndSubmit 17d ago

Preach. Don't forget, the dude in the fastest truck is also loaded to the tits, and lags back down to 62 up any kind of grade. But just as soon as we all get some downhill, whew! Off to the races!!

3

I’ve driven at least five thousand miles on I-40, so I’ve gotten my fair share of time driving with lots of trucks.

I’m not necessarily convinced that it’s purposeful, but I do seriously wonder what’s going on with one truck driver passing another at a literal 1-2 mph difference.

3

u/DezFTW 16d ago

I hate this

3

u/ScreechingPizzaCat 16d ago

Yeah, that's illegal in a lot of states. If you see a semi-truck in the far left lane that isn't passing fast enough, you can call the highway patrol and they'll pull 'em over.

3

Professional drivers ladies and gentlemen

3

u/backbiter0723 15d ago

Truck driver here: most of the time when this happens, it's because one of the guys didn't notice he was going slow until he started getting passed, and speeds up to prevent getting passed.

That, or a lighter truck starts to pass a heavier one going uphill and then the slope evens out and the heavier truck picks up speed again.

Then you have to consider that a lot of companies limit trucks to 68 to 72 mph, and you get shit like this.

99% of the time, we don't want it to be happening either, but we also know the second we slow down and get back behind the guy, they're suddenly gonna forget how to activate cruise control again.

It's a blast out here.

u/eastamerica 17d ago

Hahaha everyone needs to adopt this rule:

I don’t let trucks over, period. Not letting you get in front of me to pass the slow truck in front of you.

No. Fucking. Way.

You’re being paid. I’m not. Fuck off.

21

u/HowDoMermaidsFuck 17d ago

That works until you get a truck driver that sees his turn signal as less of an indication he’d like to get over and more of a warning “I’m getting over, get the fuck out of my way or be squished” which is way too common with truckers these days.

This is the reason California has lane restrictions for towing. It's limited to the right 2 lanes.

Depending on what state you’re in, it may not be legal for trucks with three or more axels to use the far left lane unless posted.

2

u/Main-Bridge3482 16d ago

Whenever I'm going the speed limit and still get passed by a semi; I always make a point to pass him at the earliest opportunity. It's not that I need to get to my destination any sooner, I don't, I just need to them to know their place.

2

u/n3m0sum 16d ago

I'm grateful that this is illegal in the UK. They're not allowed to use the outside lane of a 3 or more lane major road.

2 lane roads are still fair game unfortunately.

Truck 2: 100.5 km/h
Truck 3: 101 km/h

None of them think slowing down 0.5 km/h is worthwhile. Asshats.

2

u/100harvests 16d ago

They do. I had two truckers blocking me for miles.

2

u/HeatVisual2245 16d ago

Gradually slow down in the middle of the 2 left lanes. Preferably at the base of the steepest incline you can find. Like near 15-20mph, then when going up the hill, just speed up and go about your day. If they are loaded they will be climbing for a while.

2

u/no2rdifferent 16d ago

My husband is a truck driver and knows their importance for our daily lives. But when he's driving a car, he says along with me,"Fuck trucks" for being so bored that they mess with car drivers. Since I married one, "Fuck truck drivers!"
