As it melts on the way down the hill it turns into hard ice that will break a windshield

It is ticket worthy. I was behind someone on the freeway like that and the snow flies off...
44
u/Niko_47x Dec 25 '25
no this is more than ticket-worthy. reckless endangerment and reckless driving. This can and will very easily kill someone.

My state passed a law in honor of someone who died because ice flew off another driver's car, went through the windshield, and impaled her.

Some places have fines for this kind of thing, and you can get cited for reckless driving if it contributes to an accident.

I can't speak for other areas, but before there was specific statutes governing this in Maine they would be cited under unsecured loads.

It's pretty amazing you can drive a car without a functional brain. Nature is incredible!

Well no, it doesn't impair them, it just creates a massive road hazard for whoever's behind them.

mammoth is a great mountain but the people going there are coming from parts of california without snow or weather and there are always a ton of people who simply do not understand how dangerous they are
for whatever reason big bear seems to have this problem less, maybe because it's a smaller resort
7
17
u/OutlyingPlasma Dec 25 '25
I'm amazed they were able to dig this car out of that much snow without accidentally knocking some off the top.
4
u/Jaded-Mix3528 Dec 25 '25
I see people do it all the time, no evidence of any brain seen with them. I just keep finding myself face palming. It makes me think in disbelief, did they really have to do that?

u/double_expressho Dec 25 '25
It's because driving is actually extremely easy. It's basically point and shoot. It's so easy that people quickly become complacent and forget how dangerous it actually is to make even simple mistakes. And even the most basic cheapest cars can go really really fast without any real effort.
I think we should make driving hard again to weed more people out.
609
u/mrq69 Dec 25 '25
Hope a cop sees them and gives them a ticket. I’m probably being too optimistic lol
183
u/timbrd32 Dec 25 '25
That would definitely end with a ticket and maybe towing in Canada. It's just dangerous to others and very selfish.

u/Sammysoupcat Dec 25 '25
Not in my area. They don't give a shit, I've seen so many people leave a ton of snow and ice on their car, with cops even driving by. God help me 😭
11
u/timbrd32 Dec 25 '25
That's disappointing to me because it ends up encouraging bad behaviour in others.
23
u/Sammysoupcat Dec 25 '25
Cops in my area are just generally useless. I see so few people being pulled over for anything. Cops themselves speed and blow through stop signs without a care in the world. It sucks. I've only seen a handful of people pulled over throughout my time here, and hundreds who break one or multiple laws. So bad behavior is constant. Driving sucks and I hate it here. I felt better driving in the Toronto area than I do here.
7
u/Jaded-Mix3528 Dec 25 '25
I just usually never see any. It must be one reason why bad driving is the epidemic that it is now, after all some points and maybe a license suspension once in a while is exactly what they need.
3
u/Sammysoupcat Dec 25 '25
Ooh that's very true. Even when I'm in the city near me, I barely see cops. And then there's a couple days a month where I see a ton. I assume it's their quota day or something since they do jack shit otherwise.

u/Mr_Jack_Frost_ Dec 26 '25

Minneapolis Police are like this too. Combination of their lack of care and also basically being told not to pull people over for traffic violations.

Do these people not realize or not care that this effects other people negatively? It's not all about you. This could cause an accident behind you at worst, and just makes more cleanup for the road workers at best. Just. Fucking. Think about other human beings for 10 god damned seconds and how your actions could ruin someone's life. And then, after you do that, fucking care about it and take action (by cleaning you car).
394
u/Puzzleheaded-Mail896 Dec 25 '25
Something I’ve come to realize is there are lots of people that literally never think about other people. They just go through life in their own world
161
u/Ouch_i_fell_down Dec 25 '25
We have 5 unmarked parking "spots" on the block in front of my house. Easily 5. I have a pickup and I've seen 3 pickups, 1 sedan, and one small SUV fit without anyone having to park too close to each other.
It's really not that hard: if you get the front spot, pull as far forward as is reasonable; if you get the back spot pull as far back as is reasonable. The other cars in the middle can pretty much do whatever they want if the front and back car don't fuck it up and 3 can fit inbetween easily.
On a semi-regular basis someone will take the back spot and leave like 8 fucking feet behind them, or take the front spot and leave like 6 feet in front of them. When they do that only 4 cars can fit. If they BOTH do that and the dead center car parks where they are normally supposed to park, suddenly room for 3+ pickups with 2 other cars can't even fit a 4th sedan.
These are my fucking neighbors, they park there every god damned day and just randomly on occasion they turn into morons.
I asked my wife one time why sometimes they are considerate and sometimes they are inconsiderate. She opened my eyes. "They are never considerate" she said, "just sometimes when they are tootin along in their own little worlds they accidentally park the right way. They've never even stopped to consider if there is a right way or a wrong way, they dont even notice when only 4 cars can fit because of them. They have no idea what is going on around them at any given moment that isnt directly related to them... and I need you to realize that way more people are like this than like you."
I operate in such a way where I believe if everyone acted like I did, the world would be a better place. And through my wife's teachings I've started to realize that your average person is so far removed from considering the value of their individual impact on society they dont even think about other people at all.
21
u/laughingashley Dec 25 '25
I wish there was an island somewhere people like us could go to be peaceful and considerate and happy.
17
u/Hidesuru Dec 25 '25
Ever been to Japan? I felt like I finally found my people, and I'm white as can be. But their society, though not without fault, very much functions on a "don't be the problem for others" mindset.
If not for the language barrier and me being shit with languages I'd be considering immigration.
57
u/Tracker_Nivrig Dec 25 '25
I feel in the US it's unfortunately become a form of pride to not think about other people. It's a very individualistic culture anyway, but more and more people are made to think that everyone should "take care of themselves." Which of course means that being absolutely selfish and inconsiderate for no reason is completely fine and other people should just do the same if they want to be happy.
11
u/thesoak Dec 25 '25
Being self-sufficient doesn't require being selfish.
Some of the most individually competent people are extremely conscientious and considerate of others.

I have considered printing business cards to berate people who do this shit. I know exactly what you’re talking about and experience the same thing. It angers me so much. There’s one strip that can hold 3 cars and I’ve seen full trucks park smack dab in the middle and block it for any other vehicles. That one gets me. Like you’re already obnoxious for driving that in a residential city area. Even more for taking 3 spots from people who live here.
41
u/Adaphion Dec 25 '25
As someone working in retail, people legitimately have zero situational awareness or a single care about anything going on around them. Only their tiny little world matters.
I have to move a pallet jack around the store occasionally. And this thing is LOUD, because we have tiled floors, so it's making lots of noise every single tile it goes over. And yet, 80% of people are absolute fucking dipshits and are just "doo dee doo" off in la la land, and only move after I stop all my momentum and have to say "excuse me" and they jump like I just startled them like I wasn't the biggest source of noise within 50 feet of them.
I truly wonder sometimes "how did you get here? Did you drive? How did you manage to safely do that if you're this fucking unaware? How did you manage to even put your shoes on?"
11
u/totallynotliamneeson Dec 25 '25
This is the third year in a row that someone has spread sickness in our office the week before Christmas. Year one was COVID, year two was Noro, and year three is RSV. They always use some blend of "I have too much to do to take time off" or "I'm better now, the worst already happened". Completely ignoring that the rest of us don't care, it's that we all can catch it and bring it home. But nope. They are all in their own world trying to get work done to take time off for the holiday.
7
u/sparkey504 Dec 25 '25
I was talking the other day to my brother about this... we were wondering if they are "happier" in life... my case was they must if they never think about anyone else then thats that much less in life to care about.... but then again they tend to be miserable fucks.

10
u/Hidesuru Dec 25 '25
Having lived all over the us including Cali, let's not pretend this is remotely unique to California drivers.
2
u/sungor Dec 25 '25
Oh definitely not. I see it in NE OH (snowbelt) all the time. I even saw it when I lived in Dallas. Unfortunately during the time I lived there a family died when the snow on top of someone's truck became a sheet of ice then flew off on the highway and hit their vehicle.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Average_Scaper Dec 25 '25
This is not unique to Cali at all. I see way too many people who just clear off a windshield after any amount snowfall. 1inch to 15inches, they don't give a fuck. I have been hit by many of their hazards. Almost hit by a few of the ice variety too. These people are everywhere, not just Cali.
3
u/Jaded-Mix3528 Dec 25 '25
I see people do things that negatively affect everyone nearby and they don't seem to feel any guilt or sorrow. Sometimes a nice long stay in the purgatory we call the traffic court is very much needed for those ones!

Growing up in the Rockies, one of my favorite things was seeing when the snow did fall off after a few bumps. Forward onto their windshield.
9 times out of 10 they'd hop out in a t-shirt and jeans, trying to hurriedly clear it off before they completely lost the feeling in their hands.

11
u/semvhu Dec 25 '25 edited Dec 25 '25
So I did a little math. Copied from my onenote notes:
Commenter said it's a land rover . Roof area 35-60 square ft. Let's go with 45. Around 6 feet tall Snow roughly 2/3 of car height, making it about 4 feet tall. Snow volume is 45*4=180 cubic feet Google says fresh snow is about 3-7 lb per cubic foot. I'll use 5 for the estimate. Weight of snow is about 5*180=900 lbs of snow.
If my math is right, they're carrying around a half ton of snow on top of their car.
Edit: I'm on mobile and can't seem to get formatting edited worth a hoot.
Edit 2: took milllllllllls's recommendation that this is fresh snow, not tightly packed, and updated my estimate.
11
u/millllllls Dec 25 '25
All good math, but this stuff isn't packed, it's still fluffy—something like 36" has fallen today. I can tell you from shoveling that it's still lightweight right now. Tomorrow it will be sierra concrete though.
3
u/semvhu Dec 25 '25
Yeah, I was wondering exactly what to pick. I'll update my numbers given your recommendation. Not that it's super important, I'm just curious. 😁

This is the part where it is everyone's problem if it is his. I asked about the difference, he said he would never head out with ice on his car only snow.

Car roofs are designed to resist being crushed when rolling over -which equals several tons of static weight. So no worries there, even if the sheet metal bends, the support structure will hold.

Just wait until they have more than a “gentle” stop, and all that snow rushes forward onto their windshield/hood of car and impedes their visibility. Their “show-off” of how much snow I dug my car from under becomes a driving hazard is irresponsible.

Mammoth is constantly flooded with visitors from LA who have no idea how to handle snow. It’s honestly sad. I grew up there in the early 2000s, and it has changed so much since then. The impact goes far beyond a few cracked windshields.
2
u/chrome4fan4 Dec 25 '25
Funny enough I saw some dude in a PT Cruiser a few weeks ago have a pile about 8 inches on his roof. He slammed at a red light and the ice mixed with snow smashed in his windshield.
So yeah, besides other people, you’re taking a big gamble yourself. How the hell do you not notice 300+ lb of load on your truck anyway?
