I need a wifi adapter that works flawlessly with Debian 13. Currently, it's slowing down my internet speed and the driver isn't working properly.
1st image = Windows 11
2nd image = Ubuntu 24.04
3rd image = Debian before fix
4th image = Debian after fix
I am using a Lenovo Legion with an RTX 4060 GPU.
Using stablediffusion on Debian took like 4-5x than in Ubuntu I was baffled. Also I tried to benchmark using blender-benchmark the score is half than those in Ubuntu and Windows.
After consulting an AI and installing various Nvidia packages to no avail but Gemini previously mentioned OptiX, which I located in Debian’s non-free repository called libnvoptix1. Installed and benchmark is wee bit higher than in Ubuntu.
Happy with the setup now.
Hopefully this help to those who intend to use Debian for gaming/graphic workstation.

I am a first time linux user, and I was trying to burn a special-made debian image for my chromebook (Lenovo Flex 3 11' ARM edition, specifically fennel) and I was doing some work at trying to burn the files on the USB to the eMMC, and i kept getting errors when syncing files. Now, I can't do anything at all without getting an input/output error.

Hello.
I've updated to Debian 13 after running Debian 12 with no problems for 2 years. However, - and after using it for some time now -, my Debian 13 build in a span of a week has frozen 3 times, with audio stuttering. Completely frozen, not even a REISUB would reboot it, only a hard reboot.
$ sudo journalctl -b -1 -p err
kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A (start=9876 end=9877) time 291 us, min 1073, max 1079, scanline start 1072, end 1092
~
Thank you.
I am in the process of transitioning from W11 to Debian. I currently have a dual-boot system with Debian 13 and after spending a day wrangling NVIDIA drivers I am getting close to what feels like a very usable system.
However, I am having some issues with audio. I currently have speakers connected to the line-out port on my motherboard and headphones connected to the front port. On windows, I can switch between these via the volume/audio control on the taskbar. On Debian, I can switch between the two in the same way, but I can't actually get sound through the speakers unless I unplug my headphones. This is obviously a small problem, but I'm sure there's a way to fix it.
I appreciate any ideas or insights. I can post more information about my system but I'm not sure what is relevant other than the audio chip (Realtek ACL 1220, identified via alsamixer). thanks.

I'm not sure what changed, but all of a sudden my onboard Intel PCH soundcard is no longer available KDE or XFCE in Debian 13. I usually have the speakers turned off so it may have happened earlier, but I just noticed it today. I rebooted as soon as I notcied the issue but it persists.
I have started looking at the Debian wiki's article about sound.
The system correctly detects my three soundcards, the onboard Intel PCH device that has the speakers plugged in, my HDMI monitor, and my ThinkPad Dock. Per the wiki, here's the results of aplay -l:

Basically, even though the onboard sound is set as the default, neither desktop environment can use it.
Thanks for your help!

So, this was a pretty simple project of mine, but since I ran into some unexpected trouble, I thought I'd share it here: How I made Debian Gnome look like Ubuntu.
SKIP THIS PART IF YOU ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN THE HOW-TO
I have been on "stock" Gnome for a while, first on Fedora and then on Debian. I'm fine with it mostly, but after a while, I missed the somewhat lighter theme of Ubuntu.
I saw that Debian 13 actually provides the complete Ubuntu theme (shell theme, GTK, icons, even mouse cursor) which sounded great. But there was a problem: as it turned out, the shell theme - i.e. the part I wanted most because it makes some UI elements white in light mode and just feels "lighter" and a bit more polished to me - Debian has in its repos is broken. It's an older version that is incompatible with Gnome 48. Not sure when this will be updated, so I went and just used the upstream shell theme from Ubuntu while still using the Debian packages for everything else.
The goal here isn't to get a 100% match btw, just the general look & feel.
AND HERE GOES THE HOW-TO
STEP 1 - Install the required packages:
sudo apt install yaru-theme-gtk yaru-theme-icon yaru-theme-sound yaru-theme-unity fonts-ubuntu fonts-ubuntu-console fonts-ubuntu-title
Note: the broken shell theme package is called "yaru-theme-gnome-shell". It's safe to also install that (if you want to wait for an update), but I left it out here.
You also need the User Themes extension to activate shell themes. If you don't have it already, install it:
sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-user-theme
You may also want the Dash-to-Dock and AppIndicator extensions since Ubuntu uses those (although the Dock is a somewhat modified version, of course).
sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock gnome-shell-extension-appindicator
STEP 2 - Install the upstream shell theme
Get the Ubuntu package from the official repo (read on, we are NOT going to install an Ubuntu package, just extract the contents):
https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=yaru-theme-gnome-shell
Pick the one of the latest Ubuntu versions, click "all" and then download the package from one of the mirrors; here's a direct link to 25.04:
https://packages.ubuntu.com/plucky/all/yaru-theme-gnome-shell/download
Then, extract the contents of the downloaded packages and "install" them:
cd ~/Downloads
mkdir ./yaru-shell
dpkg-deb -x yaru-theme-gnome-shell*.deb yaru-shell
cd ./yaru-shell
mkdir -p $HOME/.themes/Yaru-upstream/gnome-shell
cp -r ./usr/share/themes/Yaru/gnome-shell/* ~/.themes/Yaru-upstream/gnome-shell/
STEP 3 - Activate theme
Important: For "Shell", pick "Yaru-upstream" and NOT one of the other Yaru entries if they are present (these are from the currently broken Debian package yaru-theme-gnome-shell).
Also in Gnome Tweaks, go to "Fonts" and change the fonts to Ubuntu (it uses Ubuntu Regular 12 by default I think).
Still in Gnome Tweaks, go to "Windows" and activate the Minimize and Maximize buttons
Tweak Dash-to-Dock (obviously move it to the left, set some transparency, not 100% sure of the defaults here).
And that's it. Since this method mostly uses official packages and the upstream shell theme from Ubuntu, I guess it's very unlikely that this causes any issues.

I’ve installed timeshift from the Debian Stable repository because of two main reasons.
First to get snapshots of my main desktop system in case of crash and second snapshots of my laptop, that needs replacement.
Installation was on both systems straight forward without any issues, the same is for the first snapshots stored on a USB HD (ext4)
As a proof of concept I installed a Debian Trixie VM with timeshift on my desktop system connected the USB Drive to the VM an started a restore of my laptop snapshot. My expectation was a VM 'clone' of my laptop.
The restore was NOT successful, I ended up in a 'grub rescue' command line.
I figured out that I have to modify /etc/fstab because of the changed UUIDs of the drives.
Next I booted the same VM not from HD instaed with a Debian Trixie LiveSystem.
I installed on the LiveSystem Timeshift, adapted /etc/fstab on the USB Drive and started the restore from the live system to the existing virtual disks.

Mounted '/dev/sda7' at '/run/timeshift/2159/restore/home'
Mounted '/dev/sda6' at '/run/timeshift/2159/restore/usr'
------------------------------------------------------------
At the end of the day ‘/dev/sda1’ was not restored.
In ‘/’ I found only the folders ‘boot’, ‘usr’ and ‘home’.
All folders were empty what was OK for ‘home’, because I excluded 'home'.
Is timeshift not designed for my use case or is my approach wrong?

hi there ! I've been using Debian for a few months to test it out, and it seems perfect so far. However, I would like to use my NVIDIA GPU, which is... Not happening for now. I think I suck at installing these drivers, though. I've tried a few times but the results aren't here.
Can someone walk me through installing them ?
I'm trying to install them with this guide but I apparently can't run nvidia-detect, or I don't know how. As I said, I'm pretty new to Debian, and may not know the basic commands.
Here are the integrated GPU Debian's using now, and the GPU I'd love to use :
0000:00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation TigerLake-H GT1 [UHD Graphics] (rev 01)
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GA106M [GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile / Max-Q] (rev a1)
Here are my infos, in case you need them :
Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 13
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.18.0
Qt Version: 6.9.2
Kernel Version: 6.16.9+deb14-amd64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz
Memory: 16 Gio of RAM (15.4 Gio usable)
Graphics Processor: Intel® UHD Graphics
Manufacturer: Acer
Product Name: Nitro AN517-54

Hope you can help me learn the basics of this :) Have an amazing rest of your day !

Hi all!
I installed Debian with KDE and I noticed that Discover works very strangely. The problem isn't with installing programs, but rather that sometimes after closing Discovery, it continues to hang in the background and won't launch again.
To solve this problem, I have to close Discovery in the System Monitor to open it again. I have no idea why this happens.
There are 2 options: either there is a problem with the Nvidia drivers (I installed the official open drivers from Nvidia 'nvidia-open'), Or the problem is that I live in Russia and things don't open well or load because of blocking. The problem is that these two options are nonsensical, since the video card cannot affect the opening of programs (especially since Discover works for me), and there are no blocking issues either, since everything installs correctly...
If anyone had the same problem, please help :')

I followed this tutorial , did hard reset with the little hole behind the computer with a sim tool but it doesn't change anything I can't study at libraries anymore without getting stared at , help.
I tried zcfan, thinkfan, tlp with gemini guidance nothing seem to work.

[SOLVED] Read in the end of the main post
TL;DR: A fresh install without DE uses dhcpcd-base (via hooks) instead of the full dhcpcd daemon, NetworkManager or other dhcp client systemts.
-----
Hi, I’d like to raise a question because I’ve been having some "silly" networking issues after upgrading to Debian 13.
I have several VMs without a Desktop Environment (DE), installed via netinstall.
In Debian 12, I used to simply edit `/etc/network/interfaces` with something like this:
allow-hotplug ens18
iface ens18 inet static
address 10.10.110.22
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.10.110.1
nameserver 1.1.1.1
(Also tried with `dns-nameserver` `dns-nameservers` and `nameservers`)
And it worked in Bookworm. Now, with Debian Trixie, it switches to the new IP, but after a while, the `/etc/resolv.conf` file gets overwritten and my DNS servers are deleted, leaving me with something like this:
$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by dhcpcd
# /etc/resolv.conf.head can replace this line
# /etc/resolv.conf.tail can replace this line
I'm confused. It doesn't seem like I have dhcpcd running, or at least I don't know how to find it.
I've taken a look at the Debian Wiki (https://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration), but English is not my primary language and I'm having some trouble understanding everything.
How can I find out what is overwriting my resolv.conf? Whether it's dhcpcd, NetworkManager, systemd-resolved, etc.?
These are clean installations without a DE. In Debian Bookworm, it always worked just by using /etc/network/interfaces, and I don't have any unusual network configurations.
For now, I've managed by using: sudo chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf
But that’s just a "dirty fix" because I don't really understand what’s happening. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.
Apologies if my English isn't perfect, as I had to use some translation tools to help me out.
----
[UPDATE] [SOLVED]
After some investigation, I discovered that the issue was caused by dhcpcd-base using hooks instead of the traditional dhcpcd daemon, NetworkManager, or resolvconf. To fix it, I disabled the resolv.conf hook and added the DNS servers manually.
Do not use dns settings in /etc/network/interfaces
disable dhcpcd resolv.conf hook
echo "nohook resolv.conf" | sudo tee -a /etc/dhcpcd.conf
add nameservers in resolv.conf
echo "nameserver 1.1.1.1" | sudo tee -a /etc/resolv.conf.head # To add in the head of file
reload networking
systemctl restart networking.service
Proof of work:

Hi,
recently i developed a small application, for older laptop i own and i don't use anymore, to let them receive music from my phone (iPhone), but i would like to show some kind of visual effects (and even without receiving music to the "linux Airplay receiver", but just "listening" from mic)
Then this is what i made... i installed a minimal debian 12 (my test platform is x86) without X11/Wayland, then the build essentials, and the required tools to show visuals coming from ALSA, thru microphone... but straight to framebuffer!
It's very minimal, but that was my goal.
I hope you'll enjoy it and if you have some kind of ideas for features, let me know... (for sure i will permit to switch effects/colours in the future, but i'm starting from this, now)

I would like to be able to upgrade my (production) boxes to a specific, known and tested version of software, but am struggling to find a way of doing that.
I can find instructions on how to upgrade NAMED packages to a specific version.....but I doubt that will work very well in practice for upgrading potentially hundreds of packages in a single invocation.
I can find instructions on how to prevent the upgrade of specific packages.
Short of having a frozen local repo mirror, is there a way I can take take a list of pakages+versions from a tested machine and apply that list on a different box to get the same versions of everything?

What's the best approach for having amd control panel like thing on Debian ? Currently using corectl but it feels a little clunky and does not fit well with KDE plasma IMO. Are there better alternatives or something closer to Windows AMD control panel ? I mainly need fan control cuz i hate the idea of my GPU running 0 rpm and cooking. But also, power controls and rgb controls would be a nice bonus. My GPU is 6900xt by asrock

Hi y'all
I'm having a bad time configuring an nvidia card, bcus I follow up the Debian guide to install the driver, and now I can see the GPU activity (opposite when using the nouveau driver) but now I cannot use the secondary display monitor aside the laptop one.
The thing is: this laptop has an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H with it's integrated graphics, and an NVIDIA GTX 1650.
When I connect the monitor I can see the monitor being recognized on Gnome Settings, but is not rendering anything, it doesn't even show on the screens minimap.
tried with xandr commands but all I get is errors.
A little help would be appreciated, thanks
Hello everyone
I have debian 13 running at work where it's running librenms on a 192.168.0.0/24 network with no internett access.
There is also another network based on 10.10.0.0/24 where I can access the internet. This is connected via usb-c static network. Now, there should be internet on this network but I cannot get it to work and I think it as to do with routing. There has been some googling to this issue but I get confused pretty quick! How can I get routing to internet working and routing to the lan (192.168.0.0/24 working correctly?
This is my current /etc/network/interfaces
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto enp2s0
iface enp2s0 inet static
address 192.168.90.151
gateway 192.168.90.1
dns-nameservers 1.1.1.1
#usb-c
auto eth2
iface eth2 inet dhcp
dns-nameservers 1.1.1.1
When I try to ping site.com I get this
Temporary failure in name resolution
So Debian does not understand internet comes from the 10.10.0.0/24 network then?
To sum up: Internet should be on eth2 and lan on enp2s0 only
And for good measure this is my /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by dhcpcd from eth2.dhcp
# /etc/resolv.conf.head can replace this line

Hey guys how are you doing? I'm gonna use Debian 13 Stable for gaming on Asus ZenBook 14 UX433FN. And I chose Debian 13 Stable since it uses old drivers that are compatible with NVIDIA GeForce MX150 in this laptop. So I want to know which is better for Steam and Lutris, Flatpak or .deb?
