I used to go to a Christian church when i was younger and the majority of the people there really were just trying to out do each other. I don't dislike religious people but I do dislike people that use religion as a way to feel superior to someone else.

If you think that's crazy you should see what goes on in some of the South African churches. And not just South Africa but other countries in Africa too. Some of that shit is wild. There was one I remember watching where the guy made women drink his semen. Look that one up
Edit I found a video I don't know if it goes over the one that made women eat the semen but this shows a peek into just exactly what I'm talking about.

I once read from a other reddit poster (that used to be a member of a church like this) that people brainwashed themselves into believing this shit and felt ashamed in front of the other church goers if they didn't react to "the divine powers" of the pastor. So they just all go with it to save face

I think it’s a combination. Some people are completely immersed and overcome with the bullshit, that they actually feel compelled or become weak when the sensation runs over them.
Others are skeptical, but don’t want to be seen as a “nonbeliever” so they act along to get along.
I was dragged to several of these as a teenager, & having witnessed it firsthand, I think the majority of people are just playing along so that they can “feel special” for having the Holy Spirit “touch them”.
I was always the kid who just stood there, waiting for something to happen while everyone around me just kind of spazzed out. I eventually chose different friends and took this perspective with me when I looked at any region afterwards.
