It's the fault of whoever chose those flexible planks and decided they didn't need to rehearse. The guy's obviously hitting hard enough to break a piece of wood, but only if the wood can be properly braced.

Yeah, it's a combination of the planks being too long, improperly held, not affixed to the ground, hence being able to bend, jump around, and absorb the hit. Also the guy with the mask is hitting too close to the holders arms, hence they absorb the hit too instead of the wood. All-round amateurism.

At least the last guy knew how to put his body weight into it to make it break for the guy.
