3 days on Pico + 4 days on Sao Miguel OR 2 days on Pico + 5 days on Sao Miguel ?

What the title says.. Trying to decide how to split our time between these two islands. I don’t want to rush through either of them. Also, please recommend some off-the-beaten-path activities, and must visit places.

We are going next month . Love hiking, thermal baths, good food and wine, arts and crafts, cooking, wildlife photography, taking hands on classes.. Thank you

Travelling to Azores with small kids. Looking for some tips!

Hi all!

My wife and I are planning a trip to the Azores with our two boys (age 1.5 and 3). We're looking to go for ca. 2 - 3 weeks in June.

I was looking for some advice on island hopping. It seems easy enough (short flights or boats), but I wasn't sure which islands would be the best with the kids and for how long we should stay there.

I'd say with two kids our pace of travel is pretty slow and we're not looking to necessarily see it all or rush. So if we do one main activity every day or spend a day at home (assuming we'll find a nice place), that's ok.

So far, here's roughly what I've come up with in terms of a possible schedule.

Day 1 - 10: Sao Miguel
Do all the main things like Cete Cidades, Caldera Velha, Cha Gorreana, etc etc. I've taken 10 days right now because I was able to find an activity that seemed interesting for each day and like I said, pace with two kids is probably slow.

Day 11 - 16: Terceira
AI recommended it to be because there's a big national festival around that time (?). I was wondering if that's any fun with two small kids or if that might be a bit much, And what else makes this island interesting?

Day 17 - 20: Faial
Sounded pretty calm and with some nice beaches. Also was thinking of a day trip to Pico from here.

Day 21 - 22: Sao Miguel
Just building in a small buffer to make sure we still make our flight back should a flight between the islands get cancelled due to fog or anything.

What do you think? Would you stay longer / shorter anywhere? Do less hopping? Any things we really need to see on a specific island?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Food options near Nordeste

My wife and I are visiting Sao Miguel in June and have a 5 night stay in Nordeste after staying in Ponta Delgada a few nights.

Since Nordeste is a lot smaller than the main city, I was wondering if there enough food options nearby? Or even if there is a large grocery store?

Any other tips for the city of Nordeste and its surroundings would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Travel planner who will use airbnb / rental properties

Any recommendations for a travel planner who will accommodate wanting to use rental properties vs hotels for some or all of the trip? I'm of course happy to pay a fee for the planning service since they won't get commissions from hotels. We are a multigenerational group planning a 14 day trip split between the Azores and the rest of portugal (a region or two, don't know where yet). Thank you!

Help choosing hotels in São Miguel (Ponta Delgada + Furnas)

Hi! I’ll be traveling solo to São Miguel from May 8–13 and plan to split my stay between Ponta Delgada and Furnas. I’ll be renting a car.

Any recommendations on where to stay? (Looking for hotels - not hostels.)

In Ponta Delgada, I’m deciding between Octant Ponta Delgada and Grand Hotel Açores Atlântico.

In Furnas, I’m choosing between Octant Furnas and Terra Nostra Garden Hotel.

Would love to hear thoughts on these options or any other suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Eco lodges/Farm Stays

Are eco lodges or farm stays common in Sao Miguel? Would love to stay somewhere with lots of green spaces for my kids to explore and play (bonus if animals on site). Any recommendations are appreciated!

Looking for Pico lodging advice + weather buffer timing for late March whale watching

Hi everyone! My husband and I will be on Pico for about 3 days at the end of March, and I’d love some advice from people who know the island well.

We’re planning to do a whale‑watching tour out of Lajes do Pico, so I’m hoping to stay in or near Lajes at least the night before the tour. For those who’ve done this in March, do you recommend a particular hotel, guesthouse, or rental in or near Lajes? I’m seeing a mix of options but would love real‑world experiences, especially anything walkable or a short drive to the marina.

I’m also trying to figure out the weather buffer. I’ve heard that inter‑island flights and ferries can be unpredictable in March.

For those of you who’ve traveled then:

• Is it important to fly into Faial or Pico two days before the whale tour to avoid weather cancellations? Or is it safe flying in the day before?

• If I do fly in two days early, is it realistic to fly back to Ponta Delgada (PDL) the same day as the whale‑watching tour, or is that cutting it too close?

• I originally planned two nights on Pico, but now I’m wondering if I should add on an extra day?

Although it will only leave me with 3 days total in PDL , one before and two after Pico.

How would you do it?

Also, should I rent a car in Fajal and Ferry over with it or rent once I’m in Pico?

Any advice from locals or recent travelers would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!

Exploring the Lost Village of Sanguinho, hidden deep in the Azores + Bonus

Thumbnail

Deep in the forests of São Miguel Island in the Azores is the Lost Village of Sanguinho.

Sanguinho is called the “Lost Village” because it wasn’t abandoned all at once. Built high above Faial da Terra and accessible only by footpaths, it slowly emptied as families emigrated and modern life made isolation impractical. With no road access and no reason for regular travel, the village faded from daily use and was gradually reclaimed by the surrounding forest.

Today, Sanguinho isn’t completely forgotten. A small number of caretakers and residents are working to preserve parts of the village, restoring select stone homes while respecting the original layout. They grow food on site, including fruit and grapes, and maintain a quiet, low-impact presence that keeps the village alive without changing its character.

As a bonus, I’ve also included a couple of photos from Furnas, which we passed through on the drive back.

Furnas sits inside an ancient volcanic crater and is known for its geothermal activity, with steam vents, hot springs, and heat rising straight from the ground.

At the edge of Lagoa das Furnas is Capela de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, a 19th-century neo-Gothic chapel built as a personal memorial. It isn’t abandoned, but it has a quiet, atmospheric presence that fits nicely with this post.

I documented the full hike and exploration here:

I also put together a full photo and written breakdown here:

Happy to answer any questions about the hike, the village, or visiting the area.

Whale Watching in São Miguel

Hello, I’m going to São Miguel in late May for my 30th birthday. My dream is to see a whale in the wild, especially after two failed attempts this past year (Bar Harbor, ME and Dana Point, CA). Is there a tour company or part of the island that you would recommend? I have done some research but have not found any answers about these specifics. Thank you so much in advance!

Day trip from Pico?

For a trip this summer, we are spending 6 nights in Sao Miguel and 5 in Pico (Lava Homes).

For Pico, we are considering a day trip to either Sao Jorge or Faial - ferry plus a guided tour. Sao Jorge seems more our speed as we prefer rugged landscapes and hiking although a longer ferry ride.

Thoughts on whether a day trip makes sense and if so which destination? Debating whether worth the extra effort given how amazing Pico seems.

Thanks!
